I do not completely agree with Gargantua. You should devote some of your attention to the ‘chinese problem’. But trying to destroy China and then go for Russia is not a good strategy, because you’ll become overstretched and it will take too much time.
Still, I think you should not attack Yunnan on turn 1. It’s tempting and look like the thing to do, but this entire game is based on counter-attack. You should not declare war on Britain and USA either (of course). If you attack Yunnan, you will destroy 5 chinese divisions, but they will take the territory back easily. Next turn, you’ll attack it again and they will probably take it back again. Turn 3 you have to declare war and you will do such without having tamed China.
Is it true Berlin’s IC is only a minor one? If so, you cannot expect to fuel up your offensive with only 3 units a turn.
This is a GLOBAL game. If you only think of Japan, then yes, you should be able to destroy India by attacking J1. But USA could afford to destroy Germany during the same time.
On turn on GB can fly the planes from india to a space in Africa. Have everything else fall back to Egypt. Turn two the planes land in Egypt and now Egypt is next to impossible for the Italians to take alone as far as I can see. I tried the best I could and died to man.
If you fly all your planes from India, who will protect India? Who will threaten the japanese fleet and force it to protect its transport while taking DEI? Who will help your footmen while they heroically try to defend Burma road?
Let’s say you bring in 2 planes (as Japan will probably not attack on turn 1, you should have time and money to replace 2 planes). 1 fighter and 1 tac. You have them in Kenya on UK1, in Egypt on UK2. If these are all your reinforcements, you may well lose if the Ethiopian army is free to attack you, or if Italy brings in planes, or if Italians troops come by transport .
Let’s calculate it:
6 inf, 2 mech, 1 art, 1 tank, 1 fighter (attacked France turn 1, then went to Libya).
And certainly 2 inf from Ethiopia (unless you,ve attacked them on UK1, but then your defense would be weaker too).
Or 2 inf from southern Italy with transport, with 1 CA bombarding (I didn’t even count the second transport I would build with Italy on turn 1 knowng that the frenc-Uk fleet would sink on G2 under Luftwaffe assault).
So they have 8 inf, 2 mech, 1 art, 1 tank 1 fighter to attack. A power of 19 on 13 units.
You have 4 inf (1 from Sudan), 1 art, 1 tank, 1 fighter, 1 tac. A power of 20 on 8 units.
Every time Italy touches you, you lose 2 in defense, while he loses 1.
You are sure to lose.
Would you have 3 more infantry on the position (with an IC), I still think you would lose.
You NEED an IC in Egypt for the UK to survive in Africa. At the beginning, your army in North Africa (Alexandria and Egypt) is 3 inf, 2 art, 1 tank, 1 fighter (but this fighter will soon attack the Italian fleet). Even if you assemble this army in Egypt and let the ANZAC inf in Alexandria to block, your army is still inferior to the 4 inf, 2 mech, 1 art 1 tank the Italians can advance in Alexandria. Not a lot, but still, you should be wiped out on I2, even without reinforcement or Ethiopian troops.
So Egypt needs reinforcement. If you can afford 1-2 planes from India, it’s very good (if Japan doesn’t DOW on turn 1, you have time to do it). But Is still think that you need an IC, and you need to build more than just inf in this IC.
Italy is not that weak. As they are the only power situated in the Med, they have a considerable logistic advantage. In the Channel or in the Pacific, 2 cruisers and 1 destroyer are almost sitting ducks. In the Med, they are a powerful fleet.
If you attack the sz95 italian fleet, you should destroy it while keeping your planes. But the combined french-UK fleet in sz93 will then die to the germna aircrafts fury. Depending on how much you want to throw at it, Germany should lose between 3 and 4 planes, which is a lot.
But they have money to buy others. And when this UK fleet is destroyed, the Italians have at least 2 turns (up to UK3-4) to build a new navy. This navy doesn’t need to be that powerful. How could the UK manages to get more than 2-3 planes (and I speak of planes taken from India) in the Med? And the Med is not 3 sz wide as it was before, so the Italian fleet could still hide from them and ferry troops in Africa while not approching Egypt.
Omega, Tendron et moi-même sommes à Montréal. Nous avons un groupe d’environ 6 joueurs, mais si vous souhaitez vous joindre à nous, vous seriez les bienvenus.
Depending on what you do, Italy could attack you in Egypt and take it or cry and beg.
In Africa, Italy has: 6 inf, 2 mech, 1 art, 1 tank. And 3 inf in Ethiopia and Somalia.
Uk has 3 inf, 2 art, 1 tank, 1 fighter, and 1 inf in Sudan. And 1 ANZAC inf!
If you build no IC and wait for the Italians to come, turtling in Egypt proper, their african forces may break you (10@1 2@2 1@3 and probably their fighters, against 7@2 1@3 1@4). If they do not, there is no problem, because they could ship troops in your face while bombing you from the sea too. The british african army is dead if left alone.
But they can buy time. You can give them Alexandria while trying to kill the Ethipian forces with your transport. You can especially try to destroy part of their fleet and one of their transport. Even if you lose your own mediterranean fleet and your egyptian fighter doing it, Italy will be crippled. You’ll win at least 2 turns as they’ll need more time to prepare. And as you can buy time, you should buy an IC in Egypt too, so you could defend it and make sure the Italians never become anything close too an important power in that game.
The Global game will be much more than one Pacific and one Europe game side by side. Japan must not attack J1 if it wants its allies to live. UK then has a chance to make money in Pacific for at least 1 turn, and this means that an India crush strategy will probably not work. At least not by turn 3. This also means that you could maybe spare 1 or 2 planes from India to Egypt, where they would completely change the balance of power.
I would then do not even consider constructing an IC in West India. Ab IC in Egypt and some troops shifting between Suez and Calcutta should do just fine.
Keep metals, I’ll get women. :evil:
Correct me if I’m wrong, but USSR and Germany have around the same amount of IPCs every turn (depending of course on the NOs).
Germany: 30 at start+9 (at best) from France (6 of these at best on G1)+2 from Finland+2 from Yugoslavia (let’s say they take it). And a one time 17 IPCs bonus.
Over 3 turns, they have 30+40+17+43=130 IPCs
USSR: 39 IPCs every turn, which makes 117 IPCs
But every russian production is going to Berlin, which means, in my idea, that Germany is actually at an economic disadvantage against Russia. Plus, Germany is the attacking power, so the more it advances the easier for Russian drunk footmen to reach its armies.
Imagine if you build transports and CVs to attack UK. Maybe you could take it, but you will then look desperately at the russian juggernaught coming for your women.
It should, but something quite stupid has been wrote and I’ve decided I must answer to it.
@Tralis:
Global domination is usually more a goal than anything else. I’m in roman history, and when they say that they dominate the entire world and that they are restitutor orbis (avenger, protector, of the world), it is propaganda more than anything else.
But still, when you think your leader comes from the Moon goddess, you’ve got to believe that you’re supposed to dominate the world 8-)
@MegaEinstein
Making ‘if history’ is probably one of the most dangerous and counterproductive thing in the world.
I would rather say that Japan was after regional domination (regional as in asiatic, which is still a lot!).
@MegaEinstein
This is complete historical rubbish.
@MrBlack103
Individual victory conditions would be too complicated. WWII is usually depicted as the combat of Good against Evil, of Democracy against Fascism. The fact that UK and USA were allied with USSR (which wasn’t at all a democracy…) is against this theory, plus the fact that nor UK nor USA were fighting for the liberty of Africa or Asia. In fact, before the war broke out, nobody would have believed that USA, UK and USSR woul become allies. Italy weren’t even sure allies for the Germans. The game would become much more complicated and you would have to begin in 1936 or 1938, just like Hearths of Iron or other games such as these.
Plus, it would be an historical nightmare. What were the war goals of UK? To protect what they had? To free the world from fascist evil? What did the Japanese wanted? To free the asiatic people? To destroy the USA? To vassalize China? Too many people would say too many different things and it wouldn’t be possible to build the games with clear individual victory conditions.
In june 1940 (the game begins around that time), UK wasn’t protected at all against any kind of land attack. They had around 6 divisions at the beginning of May and lost them (or at least their material, but in a modern war it is quite the same) when fleeing from Dunkirk.
@Megaeinstein: Hitler and Stalin weren’t allies. They had a non-agression pact, and both knew that the other would eventually attack. During the 30s, the Sovits tried to establish an alliance with Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania, France and UK, but thse countries (especially France, UK and Poland) weren’t that much into allying themselves with commies, even if it meant stopping Hitler.
In fact, the ones who had an alliance with Hitler until 1939 were the Polish.
