      Read “world war 2 behind closed doors” by laurence rees

      There was a secret part in the treaty between the french, british and poles which the brits and the french promised military assistance against a German attack not a Soviet attack and remember they did not help in the war between the poles in the soviets in late 1910’s and early 1920’s but instead suggested the curzon line (which the Molotov-Ribbentrop line basicly followed)

      Also the soviets at Tehran were more interested in soviet post war borders than they were in actually winning the war and remember in 1943 this was not a certainty. They wanted to keep there pre 1941 gains.

      This is just a brief overview of some othe parts of the book I suggest you read it. It is very good.

      The brits and the french could have attacked the siegfried line before the germans finished it and probably would have been succesful and because they did not co-operate with the Belgium people (I don’t know the correct word) and the dutch because the later two did not want to appear co-operating with the allies because at that time they were neutral. The Germans had a brilliant strategy in attacking (the aaa territory North West Europe) and then following nit up with the tank drive through the ardennes they cut of the Elite French and British troops from the rest of the army. They shouldn’t have allowed Dunkirk and should have forced the British and French into the sea and this would come back to haunt them.

      Depending on where you live you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a comic book shop or card shop or dedicated game shop that would have a copy of something on the shelf. There isn’t really a national game store franchise. It is mostly just some guy with a store or maybe a regional concern with four or five shops.

      My local shop usually gets one copy for anyone who’s a regular who asks and one for the shelf when a new version comes out. Typically though he doesn’t replace that till Christmas shopping season but will order one for you with a small deposit. The markup on these games isn’t very high so you probably aren’t going to go to one shop and find a copy of everything.

      Toys R’ Us probably has copies of ‘42 and maybe a decent chance of Guadalcanal or a less decent chance of BOTB. I’d think it pretty slim to find a copy of Pacific or Europe at Toy R’ Us given the price point.

      Try your yellow pages under hobby, or games, or comics. Also you might try something like www.comicshoplocator.com and give your closest shop a call. You might also try something like this Days of Wonder Store Locator. Someplace that sells games like that is likely to have a copy or two of Axis and Allies.

      Something like this might help.

      @balungaloaf:

      i heard on a show lately that the german army lost 1/4 of all supplies and material that the germans ever produced in the ENTIRE SECOND WAR!

      i was like whaaaaaaa?!

      is this accurate?  it makes sense of a lot of things for me.  by number losses of troops alone i always thought that the germans should be able to recoup their losses by their volunteer campaigns in occupied territories, or by forcing human labor in the territories occupied to free up more german men to be put into the wehrmacht.

      1/4 of all supplies produced lost is staggering.

      makes you wonder why in the hell Hitler didnt allow a tactical retreat from the area after the soviets counterattacked en masse.

      the question is this. is the 1/4 loss number accurate?

      I think this may be be reference to a line in the “Stalingrad” episode of “The World at War”.  Towards the end of the episode, as the narrator describes the German losses in men and equipment at Stalingrad, he says that enough equipment was lost to equip one-quarter of the German army.  So it’s not a reference to one-quarter of the equipment produced, which would be a much larger number.

      @KurtGodel7:

      @Imperious:

      But short of that I think they could have won if Japan even made the gesture of attacking Russia.

      The forces in the ‘far east’ didn’t cause Hitler to lose, Hitlers decision to attack Stalingrad and how he did it destroyed his chances in 1942.

      In 1941 The winter caused Hitler to lose because he didn’t prepare for it and underestimated the Soviet army. Those forces were just icing on the cake used for the foiled counteroffensive, AFTER the Germans failed to take Moscow. The battles just before Moscow at Vyzma are the ones that cost the Germans too much time, so they didn’t get to Moscow in force after fighting 5 Soviet Armies.

      “Contrary to German expectations, the encircled Soviet forces did not surrender easily. Instead, the fighting was fierce and desperate, and the Wehrmacht had to employ 28 divisions to eliminate the surrounded Soviet armies, using forces that were needed to support the offensive towards Moscow. The remnants of the Soviet Western and Reserve Fronts were able to retreat and consolidate their lines around Mozhaisk.[22]  Moreover, the surrounded Soviet forces were not completely destroyed, as some of the encircled troops escaped in groups ranging in size from platoons to full rifle divisions.[23]  Soviet resistance near Vyazma also provided time for the Soviet high command to quickly bring some reinforcements to the four armies defending the Moscow direction (namely, the 5th, 16th, 43rd and 49th), and to transport three rifle and two tank divisions from the Far East.”

      I hardly think “three rifle and two tank divisions from the Far East” were the cause of the German failure. The weather and Hitlers unprepared logistics past a campaign of over 4 month duration were catastrophic.

      If Japan attacked Russia it would have done nothing except expose yet another front to them and cause a 3 front war for Japan. The balance of the Soviet forces on the border were more than enough to wipe out the japanese Kwangtung army as they did in 1939.

      Japan would gain nothing but another defeat, and tie up units that were used after Dec 41 in a protracted battle. Declaring war and doing nothing was not an option either. Stalin would go on the defensive if he was engaged with Germany. If Japan didn’t get her feet wet, the ploy would fail and 5 divisions still head toward Moscow. If they committed, it would have hastened japanese defeat in Asia. Stalin had more than enough forces for both once Moscow was protected.

      You are obviously very familiar with this period of history. I think that the forces from the east to which the earlier poster was referring may have been the 100 divisions the Soviets shipped west during the winter of '41 - '42. After the Japanese attacked Britain and the U.S., Stalin knew they would have little attention to spare for a war against the Soviets.

      I agree, however, that Stalin was probably guilty of being overly cautious on his eastern front, and that he could have safely sent large numbers of divisions westward against Germany regardless of what Japan did.

      1905 may have played a role in Stalins units  in the East.

      Frederick Barbarossa was one of the greatest hero’s in German History. He was Hitlers personal hero. He successfully protected the feudal states of Germany from foreign invasions and established the first German Reich. His zealous personality was of vital influence to the crusades against Muslims in the middle ages. Hitler viewed his activities in the Soviet Union as another modern crusade against communism, so he felt the analogy fitted to his operations in Russia.

      @Petrucci08:

      The indian Sepoy mutiny of 1857.

      …. and if you stretched it enough i suppose you could call the reformation a civil war in the church  :-D

      they forgot a lot of them without haveing to strech. like all the english civil wars and the glorious revolution. and they forgot the war where more americans died than any other war. (also happens to be the second modern war) the Civil War. (what a creative name) Does the Hungarian Revolution count as one and all the other minor communist revolts. Does Italian Renuifaction count as a civil war. because it just this one dude going around and forcing others to join the great italian cause. but someone said something about Greece. they did have a civil war right after world war I i think.

      Greece had its civil war after WWII

      the communists tried to seize power

      the USA and UK backed up anticommunist forces which eventually win

      very important event was closing the borders of Yugoslavia and Albania to Greece, that how Greek communists found themselves trapped
      -it happened after the Tito-Stalin split

      and the Greek communists were i think ideologicaly connected to Soviets

      yeah i think that happened after both wars. first the brits and the french were dividing up Turkey and the Russians and Americans created the coldwar.

      The nations that does not fight for it’s own freedom does not deserve it.

      And China isn’t really communist anyways. They are more like a capitalist police state, something that communist nations can easily turn into when they learn that their idealism is nonsense.

      I agree. Al Qaida is almost exclusively a Sunni group made up mostly of Saudi’s.

      I just misread your sentence “I have not yet encountered a hostile Iraqi, most of them are in fact, of Saudi background.” as being that you have not encountered hostile Iraqi’s who had emmigrated from Saudi Arabia and I was thinking that any Saudi who emmigrates to Iraq is probably up to no good….

      not many. i count two.  and then it took a thousand+ years and america to bring it back.

      and both democracies spawned civilizations which had a great impact for the world and knowledge and spreading of ideas.  same with america.

      yeah, and then they fell… are we going to fall? It’s hard to determine whether or not a nation with such an amazing amount of power will fall. Yet, history has proven every nation has… Roman… Ottoman… French… German… they all went down.

      Don’t worry, I have my fingers crossed for us.
