      As for the game time (not turns): we tend to analyse some attacks before making a move. For example, if Germany has ~90 units next to Moscow and the Russians/UK have ~100 units there, Germany enters all the units into the battle calculator to see the odds before he decides if the assault will take place or it is wiser to do ‘something else for the time being’.

      Battle calculator analyses, unfortunately, take some time… Not paralysing the game but definately extending it.

      You guys use battle calc extensively when playing tabletop? In our play group there’s one guy who usually brings it out for a big battle like what you listed and sometimes other people will ask him to run BC for them, but most of us don’t play with it. I will use it quite a bit on triplea since it’s built right into it and most other opponents I’ll face online will use it as well. I’ve never used it at the table though as I think it’s a crutch and detracts from the fun of the game if you calc at the table like you would online.

      We use those NOs for Japan:
      $5 each round that Japan controls ALL Chinese territories.
      $5 ONE TIME when Japan destroys the Flying Tigers fighter.

      I’m sure cyanight meant for the Flying Tigers NO to be a one time thing. I don’t think it would make much sense to simply give Japan $5 basically for nothing every round after they killed the fighter.
      This kind of gives me a laugh thinking about if Japan killed the Flying Tigers fighter to get that $5 per round. Then things go very badly, lose their navy and all their territory and end up cornered just on Japan with US subs convoying their remaining 8 IPCs each round. Yet they still can collect that $5 for something they did several rounds earlier.

      We also added and/or changed a number of NOs for other countries:
      France – $5 per turn for ANY Axis territory controlled by France in Europe. (This would only happen after France was liberated and UK/US allowed them to lead the attack on an Axis territory OR if in some odd circumstance neither Germany or Italy managed to take Paris and France was active and able to mount some kind of offense)
      Russia – $2 per turn for each Victory City Russia controls once Russia is at war in Europe. (This way if Germany comes on really strong and blocks the Archangel/SZ125 NO, Russia can still collect 4-6 IPCs in NOs for a while. It may help in defending their capital).
      Germany – $5 for controlling London
      Here is where we made the most changes. We eliminated the nearly impossible $5 for UK controlling ALL original territories. Let’s face it, after round 2 it ain’t happening.
      United Kingdom –
      $5 if there are no German submarines in any sea zone in the Atlantic and Mediterranean with the exception of Sea Zones 113, 114, 115 and 100.
      $3 for UK control of ALL Canadian territories
      $3 for UK control of Eastern Persia, Persia, NW Persia and Iraq.
      $3 for UK control of Gibraltar, Malta, Egypt and Trans-Jordan.
      $3 for Allied control of Ethiopia and Italian Somaliland AND no Axis units in any African territory south of Egypt and the Sahara.

      Honestly, I would play with the allies each and every time if those were the British NOs! Throw in Russia getting quite a bit more and it starting to look like the axis need a bid! Yes Japan gets some extra cash. But it doesn’t really compare to what the allies get. In most games I’ve played, UK can regain their NO bonus after a couple of rounds at the latest unless Germany is giving heavy support in the med, Italy’s benefited from good dice, or some such. And Germany is pretty much FORCED to go for some sort of med strat with that much cash going to Britain if they firmly control the Med, Africa, and the ME.

      I could see one or two of these working well, especially if Japan’s getting a boost in the Pac as well. But all of the allied NOs listed gives them too strong of an advantage IMO. I’m curious how long have you played with these NOs, do you bid for either side, and how often the axis win?

      Oh right, forgot that Germany can’t get an air unit to S.Italy for Italy to have the potential to scramble 3 fighters into s97. Unless Germany forgoes hitting either sz110/sz111.

      Upside

      • Kills Russian troops which would otherwise move back out of range.

      • Germany can’t win without conquering at least most of Russia. Early start could mean an early win.

      • Catches the allies off guard and can get in deep before the rest of the allies are in position to intercede. Especially if Japan doesn’t bring the US into the war by attacking the allies.

      • Allies are spread out and out of position early; Russia is spread out and out of position early. G1 attack takes advantage of this before the allies can start concentrating.

      Downside

      • Lose the 5 IPC peace bonus

      • Russia gains 5 IPC war bonus unless Germany put a naval unit in sz125 (weakening attack against the RN+RAF)

      • Pulling the bb out of the opening attacks on the RN either leaves the attacks weak and greatly increases the odds of heavy Luftwaffe losses and the chance that some/majority of the RN will still be afloat on UK1. Or it gives up attacking one of sz110/sz111 which gives the RN a core of units to build a fleet around.

      • No Sea Lion threat leaves Italy vulnerable to UK moving against them in force and building units in Africa and maybe ME early.

      -Poor odds in sz115 if Russia scrambles the fighter. Only 33% for Germany unless they bring an air unit (further weakening odds against either the RN or in E. Pol. A retreat from this battle exposes the remaining German ships open to attack on R1, potentially losing the transport and loaded units who couldn’t disembark.

      • If air is brought to sz115 and Russia doesn’t scramble and the sub dives, Russia can counter attack with sub + 3 air if they’re safe to land somewhere.

      • If Germany loses it’s navy, especially the transport, Russia could potentially push some troops into Scandinavia knowing Germany can’t reinforce with the transport for a 21 IPC swing each turn (+11 for USSR and -10 for Germany).

      • Even slightly below average dice in Baltic States, especially if Germany doesn’t bring the 2 troops brought by sea, could leave 3 expensive tanks vulnerable to a counter.

      I think that your strat can be effective, but I’m concerned with how the naval situation plays out; both in the Atlantic and in the Baltic). London could build up a strong fleet for early landings either in Scandinavia or W. Europe since they’re freed from a threat of a SL and there’s likely some combination of a weaker Luftwaffe, stronger starting RN, or both. The balance of power early on favors the Germans as they push into Russia. But they need to keep those troops flowing east. An early allied landing or even threat of one can really sap or even stop it almost completely.

      Overall, I think a G1 can be effective but there are a lot of variables to consider. What’s Japan doing while Germany goes for the G1 Barbarossa? How do the allies respond to such an attack? I can’t say that I’ve seen a G1 Barb exactly as you describe, but I have seen quite a few with minor variables in where Germany attacks, what units they use where, and what the buy is. I’ve seen some fail spectacularly with Berlin eventually being taken by Russia and I’ve seen others work with resounding success. I’ve also experienced the exact same strat working well in one game and failing in another due to dice or difference in allied play.

      A G1 Barbarossa can be very fun to play and can work out for the axis. And it’s a quiver I keep in my axis play partly due to effectiveness and partly for the fun factor and to keep things fresh. The fact that so many different strategies (both axis and allied) is part of what keeps G40 fun to play again and again and again and . …  . well you get the point! Experiment and find what works for you and against the opponents you play; be it a single friend, a local playgroup, or on this forum.

      I am fairly new to the game but I have played the US a couple of times now.  I have found that in the erly rounds when the US is Neutral, I like to send fighters and tachs to the Pacific air bases and the Hawiian fleet heads to the Philipenes.  It lets the Japanese player know that I won’t surrender territory and the aircraft on the airbases has helped with some sea battles.  They are also easy to move into position whereever I need to react to the Japanese player.

      I’m not sure who you play against, but I can guarantee you that Japan is not being played right if you can manage to send the US Pacific fleet and air to the Phil and various ABs without paying heavily for it. Eventually the USN can do this, but that’s after putting A LOT of boats & CV+air into the water first. Japan simply starts with too much air and navy and the USN doesn’t start with nearly enough to poke it’s head into the lair of the beast.

      It might work in your play group or the triplea AI, but it won’t work against experienced players. And if you keep doing this move at some point your play group will come to realize the gift you’re handing Japan on a golden platter and utterly smash the USN. Done right, you won’t even see a favorable exchange rate on the losses both sides will suffer. Richest country or not, the US simply cannot afford to lose entire fleets to Japan in exchange for a couple subs, dds, and maybe maybe some air.

      You’re on the right track and eventually the US needs to move in a face down the IJN, but you need to make sure you have enough to survive and/or are strong enough to take a lot of Japanese equipment with you. With the caveat that the strategic situation in Europe and the Pacific has a huge influence on what US should do, a lot of the time the US can afford to trade units with Japan as long as they come close to a 1:1 exchange ratio.

      Japan’s simply not strong enough economically to match US ship builds in the Pacific while still dealing with the Indians and Chinese on the mainland. Especially if you’re denying them their money islands or at least contesting them. Japan has enemies on all sides which weakens what she can do. So being able to take out a huge chunk of their air/navy will seriously jeopardize their long term chances at victory.

      I’ll give you that Iraq was probably the single most ridiculous battle thus far. But I wholeheartedly agree that the dice have favored you pretty much from the get go. I’m wondering what you bribed the dice with? Two tickets to paradise? Year’s supply of kit kat? I don’t know what it is, but I’ll figure it out and outbid you!  :evil:

      Seriously though, that Iraq battle really improved my mood about the dice and also the chances in this game. Still need another battle or two like that or several smaller battles to completely balance it out, but dice are fickle and we still have plenty of rolling left!
