I think the N.O.s should not all be  5 IPC’s  I do not see them as being equal.
Soviet player is the only exception

Maybe a small bonus for having all.

      A

Is there anybody ther who still plays this game?

I am looking for an opponent for AARe. The base rules are the same as AAR with mainly changes to tech, NAs, and subs. You can find the rules here - http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75890/19941510/AARe_:_Enhanced?pg=1
Alternatively, you can find the rules stickied in the house rules section, but those are different in 2 minor areas (Yamato BB NA and radar NA) but for all else they work.

This ruleset is very fun to play with as it adds action in the pacific and increases the strategy possibilities. Germany can actually do subs in the atlantic and not be owned. KGF is no longer a must.

      We would do mapview PBEM.

There is a very nice mapview module for AARe that I can give you if you don’t have it.

If you are interested pm me or email me at bayern2323@gmail.com

Depends though, how long can you hold off the allies from threatening Italy from the sea if you purchase boats?  Honestly I wouldn’t buy a fig and a carrier though, if your going that route go all the way and let the Germans and Japaneses lands planes on your carrier for you.

Look at it this way, by the end of J3 there could be a fleet of 2 loaded carriers, 2 cruisers, a battleship, and a destroyer or two.  That is 11 hits, 5 @ 4, 2 @ 3, and 1 @ 2.  I doubt the allies have the air power on turn 3 to take that out, and if they do they don’t have many trannies to push afterward.  The allies also must be careful at that point of splitting there fleet and Italy suicide into the US’s boats if the UK moves her boats.  Can be very effective against an all out push from the allies on Europe.

Yea, and it’s still in the shop too.

      Here’s the sit (pronounced “sitch”)

I run off a laptop all the time.  A 90 watt power supply uses significantly less power than a 600 watt power supply, especially if you leave your machine on 24/7 like I do. (Yes, I know, the damage from power up/power down is no longer significant like it was in the late 80’s and the old 8086 processors (80386 DX, 80486, etc)).

There is a lot of construction going on in my neighborhood atm.  The home owner’s association decided to reside and reroof all the units, so as you can imagine, the air is about as polluted as the air in Bejing China atm!

The system fan (that would be the big fan in the unit, not the heat sink/fan on the processor) got clogged with debris and the brushes (the things that make the fan blades move) wore out so the fan does not blow anymore.  Thus, the system builds up heat (despite the external cooling pad I had under it) and shuts down to prevent damage to the processor.

The unit is under warranty still, but since it is a laptop, they cannot just send me a fan to pop in there.  They have to remove the hard drives and RAM and put them into a completely new enclosure (yay me) which of course means a complete format and reload of the software (yay me again) before they can send it back.

So that’s what’s goin on.  (Yay me.)  So I get to sit in a library and try to get posts in every so often (yay me) but I have not disappeared!

I have canceled all my competition games at AAMC because there are time limits and new rounds of the tourney have to start, etc.  I’m confident that league games I have here will be fine to continue, since we technically have until at least December 1st to complete or get close to completion for the year.

I do ask that if it has been a few days (ie a week) and I have not posted, or you see I posted somewhere but not in your game, you bump it because by the time I get back, there are 13+ pages of new posts to go through and I sometimes miss games.

      Thanks

      @bugoo:

As far as tech goes I would propose a point system.  Assign a point value to each tech.  Purchase researchers as normal.  Roll as normal for research, but add up the total rolls and apply them toward the selected tech.  You could assign different researches to different techs, but cannot change the tech they work on once purchased.  Once point value is reached, tech is gained said researchers are lost.  For example.

As US I want heavy bombers eventually, they are worth 30 research, so on turn 1 I purchase one heavy bomber researcher.  I roll and get a 3.  Now I need 27 more research to get heavy bombers.  On turn 2 I decide I want super subs, and since that tech isn’t as powerful I only need 15 research to get them.  I purchase 2 researchers, both for the subs as I want to sink japan’s navy now.  I roll a 2 for my heavy bomber researcher, leaving 25 left, and then roll a 4 and a 5 for my subs, leaving 6 left and with any luck on turn 3 i’ll get my super subs.

This will allow you to slowly work at a tech, rush for it, and choose to go for the good but expensive techs, or take an easier, faster, tech, or all of the above.  Now all nations may buy a heavy bomber researcher turn 1, but hey there is nothing wrong with that!

Hello.  I am digging up this as the tech lovers/haters discussions have started to heat up.

I re-read your thoughts and am wondering if you ever did anything more with this idea of a tech pointing system.  Did you ever come up with point targets for each tech?

The neat thing about this is that it can be easily tweaked with out re-writing the whole process.

Or you could go one step further and adjust the targets by country too.  For example, make super subs very low (read affordable) for Russian super subs or something like that, or even harder for the wealthy countries (like extra points for USA for Long Range)

      @ncscswitch:

Baiting is best done AFTER you have determined that your opponent might be subject to it.  The most common way of determining that is by a moderately risky attack by your opponent in the first 1-2 moves of the game.  If they roll for moderate odds battles (70% or less) early on, then future baiting may pay off.

Or if they try for a Russian Triple on Russia 1. :P

But honestly, baiting only pays off when you are winning.  Otherwise, baiting will always help your opponent.

      BTW,

I’d like to see a few more VCs.

Germany should have one in Warsaw and Kiev. (That would be E. Europe and Ukraine, I believe.)
England should have one in Cairo (That would be Egypt, I believe) and Toronto (E. Canada)
Japan should probably have one in the E. Indies; it was a MAJOR target in their campaign after all.

That should even out the VCs so that each side would need 12. (instead of 11/10.)

I’d even suggest moving the American VC from Hawaii to Midway.  For some ungodly reason, no one ever makes Midway important, and yet, it was THE turning point in the real war!  At least with a VC there, it may be contested for once.

As for Hawaii, I just don’t see the strategic importance in history of making it a VC.  Even the Japanese never bothered invading it.  They landed in Attu Island and attacked Midway. (BTW, Attu for those who do not know, are the Alutian Islands which are part of Alaska.)

Be intestesting to allow a limited land bridge between North America and Russia along those islands too.  If you own Buryatia, SFE and Alaska you may move 2 infantry or 1 armor from/to Alaska to SFE without needing a transport to do it.  Might entice America to focus more on Japan and keep Russia from just abandoning the worthless states in the east for the lucrative states in the west as well. (Besides, it’s not easy to keep all three of those states!)

You know, I have yet to win a game where I put bid units in Ukraine.

I guess if someone lets me bid 2 infantry, artillery to Ukraine I might survive, but I rarely win a 10 IPC+ bid in this game.

      Because a destroyer is cheaper.

You cannot buy 2 transports and a carrier on Japan 1.  That means trading in a transport to get a carrier, not a trade I want, or getting two transports (3 or 4 total available on Japan 2) and a destroyer thus not tying up your fleet on such non-sense as transport protection duty.

Not to mention, when I go after the American fleet with Japan, I always wish I had another destroyer.  I never wish I had another transport.  (Talking rounds 12+ when Japan goes after the Allied fleet to protect S. Germany)
