I don’t want to leave you in the middle of a year so intend to finish this year out and set up playoffs and everything, but maybe somebody should come alongside me and learn some of the ropes, or maybe you guys have an idea of another direction to take all this.

Contributing to this decision is that I did have my first manic and depressive episodes this year since 2005 (still pretty depressed - trying to get the right meds) but I wanted to get out anyway, since I haven’t found the time to play any league games myself.

I intend to help make a smooth transition if someone else is eager to moderate and score games (maybe a team) - I’d been doing everything with no partner for years now (Although having a partner can mean more work if they have differing ideas than you)

gamer, you have been nothing short of amazing all these years, and you’ve put up with sometimes a very tough crowd. we’ll definitely be missing you as moderator, but hopefully we will have you back as a casual player one day once difficulties clear up for you. I will pray for your complete recovery, and please don’t hesitate to message me in here ANY time for anything you need, even if it’s just for a chat because you’re bored or whatever.

Hey all, just wanted to drop in to say hello and that I miss gaming here with all of you. It’s been some time. Too bad I didn’t make a run for a three-peat this year, I guess I really needed a long break from all gaming in general. Anyway, I doubt I’ll be playing for a while longer still, but thought I’d check in nonetheless to see how everybody’s doing.

interesting discussions. would love to hear more about why andrew and maybe others think bm “radically changed” the game. for me at least, i feel the team behind it did an amazing job of enhancing it in very thoughtful ways that achieved certain goals beyond just trying to balance it, eg, nudging it a bit more toward looking like the history. and when i play bm i very much feel like i’m playing global but with great enhancements that give the allies a real chance without just throwing ever more loads of money at the problem. by the way, i agree very much the bid is not only great for variability/replayability but also an exciting aspect of the game. so i’m glad bm still requires a somewhat substantial bid, but just not too ridiculous imo like 50+ would be.

anyway, for me, besides more balance and a more reasonable bid, i like bm because

1. i never liked the re-looting rules in the original where if you regain your capital and then lose it again, the money again goes to the captor
2. the intercepting rules that simon pointed out, how dumb is it that a bomber and a fighter both fight at a 1?
3. vichy adds some historic realism to the game very nicely, while also adding more opening strategies and variability… it’s just a very fun aspect of the game imo
4. same for the chinese guerillas, gives china a standing chance will also opening up another potential strategy for the allies (via american airstrikes… love this option)
5. LOVE the new marine unit, gives back some much needed love to those capital ships and who doesn’t like cool new units? when has anyone ever complained about having artillery when they came out, or any of the other numerous new units that rolled out over time with new editions?
6. bomber cost at 14, altho i resisted it at first, did away with that stupid utterly ridiculous dark skies that some ppl exploited in the past… so i welcome it, but cost of units is easily negotiable between players and i’ve been experimenting with costs of cruisers and battleships being cheaper, making them great again

anyway i can go on, but all of these additions/enhancements don’t at all make the game feel “radically” different… eg you still have all the basics… G going for Russia or occasionally a SL if brits are careless… Japan going for india and china first, then turning on anz/hawaii… allies building up in 110 or first clearing out the med. all the basic fun strats are there and then some.

I completely agree with trulpen and ksmckay on this one, we need to be real and make what really is the predominant variant be the default. Great arguments have already been made which I won’t repeat here. I for one will automatically resign my game in protest if any of my playoff opponents insists on OOB instead of BM3. And I won’t ever participate in this league again, until we are heard on this properly. This is not like the first or even second time we’ve been asking for this, after all, and man it’s such a simple and logical request.

Simple rule change: game variant played most in the league year shall determine the default for the playoffs. Done.

You are arguing a completely different point here. No one is stopping people from playing whatever they want in the league. We’re talking about playoffs only. Your friends can advertise exactly what they want and see if anyone is a go (including tech, dice or low luck, combat first, OOB, p2v, heck I bet they could play as revised in this league and gamer would be ok with it).

Hello, would like to play a bm4 game. It’s been a while… might have a hard time remembering how to play.

so sad!! i had many fun games with him, he’s going to be missed a lot… when i came back from my long break, i was wondering where he had gone, figured he’d be back eventually. i did know a little about his battle with cancer, it was something he had mentioned once while we were in a match. i believe @Pejon_88 was pretty close to him, not sure if irl or just online. anyone have any links to his chess blogs?

There should be an at war clause as well.

maybe you guys can correct it in bm4.2, and while you’re at it make the battleships cost 18 and cruisers 11 like in ptv, or better yet, 16 and 10. :)

I think what’s needed most to breathe fresh new life into global (all variants) is that ever illusive overhaul of the tech development. It’s a whole dimension of the game that’s gone MIA for too long.

Apparently BM did decline significantly in 2025. The rules are set in January, so a year ago 3, 3, and 6 were the right requirements. They could be changed at the end of the year, but only if participants agree, because all year everyone was operating under the knowledge that it took 6 BM games to qualify. The 3 game minimums are also a factor for some players, deciding on the timing and mode to play during the year. So as far as 6 being too many, well, BM can simply be changed to 3 for 2026, but

Zarhunter just signed up, so even without farmboy we have 7, which would be one bye for Axis-Dominion which isn’t really a problem. So as Simon noted, even if I were to change the requirement to 3 right now after the whole year is over, it would hardly even make a difference anyway, surprisingly.

So we have 7 for BM and there will be 1 bye, or in the event that farmboy gets 6 and wants in, there will be a perfect 8. BM minimum requirement will be lowered to 3 games for 2026

Thanks gamer! I definitely would want farmboy in even with 5 games, wouldn’t make sense for the defending champ to miss the requirement by 1 game lol

The league rules are a bit outdated and I don’t believe they reflect the league as it is being played. Up until the release of PTV this year 99% (didnt actually calculate but its close to this) of the games the last few years have been BM3. The 2018 playoffs and 2019 playoffs were both conducted using BM3 since that is the game the the league actually plays. This year things are a little different as PTV was released and allowed with league rules.

The rankings as they are (with one exception) reflect BM3 play. I dont see how its reasonable to have any game other than BM3 used to determine league champion. I also think league champion means absolutely nothing outside of the context of this community so I think its perfectly reasonable for the community to decide how things are considered which is why I am asking.

I think at minimum there should be a league playoff where the sole game played is BM3. If there is enough interest I think there could also be a PTV bracket. But I think that would be better for next year when the game has time to be further developed. The PTV game as it is has been changed several times throughout the season and while I like the idea of a PTV tourney, I dont think there is a real way to determine participants based on exisiting scoring. Cant just take the top 8 and put them in a PTV tourney since a good portion of the top 8 have played almost no PTV.

I will admit that I am biased to this discussion. As things stand now if everyone in top 8 were to participate in tourney I as the 4th seed would probably be forced into playing OOB which I wont do as I have played zero games of OOB. I rejoined the league after a several year hiatus 3 or so years ago and at that time the league was playing BM3 almost exclusively so recognizing that that was the game the league was playing, that is the game I chose to play. Having an OOB game determine playoffs in a BM3 league makes no sense (and would only be considered because the league rules were never really updated and so a loophole exists that doesnt reflect play in the league).

I second everything said here. I play BM3 exclusively, and I’m really not up for playing other variants, and certainly not PTV for the championship tournament. So I too will simply sit out if BM3 is not made the default going forward. I think we have the vast number of games being played as BM3 to warrant this kind of change.

I think the opposite is important. ie. Tactics trump strategy. Patton said something like: great tactics can make a mediocre strategy sing but without the right tactics an excellent strategy can fail.

So I guess you still need a decent strategy, perhaps look at what other players do as Axis. Allies need to react a lot.

It is neither strategy nor tactics that is primary, but principles :)

BTW I am 2-0 against the 2nd ranked player. Adam, however, has always been better than me I will admit that. I think he has beaten me at least 2 out of every 3 games, maybe more idk I’d have to look back.

Berlin…nice, been all over Germany but never Berlin, maybe I should come over for the love letter! I think I would hate going back to BM, no scrambling fighters, I don’t think I can play a game that doesn’t have scrambling fighters…come over to PTV, the people over here are much cooler, less nerdy…

all the extra scrambling is precisely why i’m not a big fan of ptv… i think it’s pretty cool in a lot of ways but the new scrambling rules are a bit much for me personally. anyway let me know if you’re ever down to come back and play the simpler bm again :)

i vote @JDOW reviews my last game vs adam, i know he was watching it closely and would be great to hear from the master. besides, since he’s not actively playing anymore he has some time to spare in doing reviews instead haha

altho, this one is 38 rounds so he’d have to focus on some of the key battles and rounds or else that’d be a long video!

congrats @farmboy , our new champ! and sorry @Adam514, clearly that game did not go as well for you as we all have come to expect! hopefully next year’s tourney will be a really challenging and fun one for all of us.
