or how about letting transport act as casualties? that would definitely destroy the bomber strat…

hehe, i guess conventional, my experience has been a little better. But I agree it is weighted slightly toward the axis. Regardless, I am not sure that a bid is necessary to fix the game. To make the game fun and with variety? Sure, but that as an entirely different process. I still feel that moving units on the board, turn order, AA back to normal, etc, etc…could provide a far closer solution towards “balance.”

I already sent a request for a game with him. But frankly, if anyone has read this thread this far and wants to play the Axis and use the bomber strat. I am game to play the allies zero bid. The reason for this is that “bidding” a fix does not make. If the game is hosed, its hosed. Playing the allies sucks if the Axis utilize this strat. I don’t mind seeing if I can give Russia life till about turn 7…then I still die about turn 9 or worse I neglected other nations to the point they fall. IDK, I hope its a combination of delaying/retreating with Russia…but every unit, not leaving anything if you don’t have to. And lotsa planes. /sigh, I just don’t know.

Just throwing an idea out, but what if the Allies are heavily bombing Germany and Italy? Would it slow the production of German bombers down? Haven’t really looked at this too closely, just wondering.
I have been toying with it against JJ, and I can tell you that while the bombers are very effective…the allies still have to buy the starting pieces that make German bombers so nasty. It takes time, but America can really put the hurt on. Search for Alsch91’s game against Auswanderersland…I think we had 21 American bombers against a conventional game where he went Russia first. It was close…as in, we weren’t sure we were going to win - I think he got bored when a lucky bomber AA roll sank his fleet, but it was dicey to the last.
While this gives me hope for a proper bomber counter, it takes time and so, I believe that it will be a combination of conventional and bombers for the allies. Regardless of the strat…ultimately, saving Russia should be the focus imo. I greatly appreciate the feedback and thoughtful comments, I play JJ this Saturday. Its on like Donkey Kong.

Let me reiterate something here. You are actually building bombers by saving the fleet!
By providing casualty soakoffs for taking out any attempt by Britain or the US to come to Europe.
You have 8 Soaks before your attack power diminishes at all. So with the bombers on the board plus your soaks, exactly how many carriers and planes must the US build?
The fact that the ships get to fire is pretty nice too, only adds to the threat, although I don’t even count fleet as attackers with bombers, just soakoffs.

RE: Operation Dark Skies JamesAleman(axis) vs Allweneedisloveposted in Play Boardgames
Its hard not to justify the dd and fighter build. For 18 IPC you guarantee the safety of your fleet of 66 IPC. You are not deviating from the bomber build. If you didn’t have the fleet, you’d be building bombers.
The real problem is Germany is playing around with their fleet. The only reason to keep that fleet is to use as casualties as bombers…an excellent reason btw. And it didn’t cost much to save it. Russia is in danger of falling in 2 turns. Lockdown for sure next turn.
God save the queen, you can start playing the waiting game in Russia and lockdown Britain now.

I am more or less 100% sure you are not even getting to bryansk, and you are never holding it. against a pure bomber strat like this, I am building artillery.
You Dow russia on G2, killing 0 units,
My russian beginning army is ; 27 I, 3Art, 2 mech, 2 tank, 2 ftr, 1 Tac.
R1 build; 3 I and 7 A
After R1 it is ; 30 I, 10 Art, 2 mech, 2 tank, 2 ftr, 1 tac. you will not kill anything when you declare, because I wont let you hit anything
after R2 I will have 33 I, 17 A, 2 mech, 2 tank, 2 ftr, I already have a bigger land army than you are planning on having after G5at the end of R4, I should have at least 40 I, 25 A, 2 tank, 2 ftr, 1 tac and 4 AAs in bryansk. I can also have the british using their ftrs to prevent you from stratting moscow.
what is worse is that your bombers will never help you on defence. If the german army of 44 units stands in belo and I can hit with 70+ units, it really does not matter what your units are.
you are never taking bryansk then with your 44 landunits + 16 planes.
Of course, you can be right. If you play Russia conservatively to the hilt, at round 4 its a close call (russia’s favor heavily) for Germany to push up against Russia’s stack. The thing is…while indeed Germany may not be able to take, they just don’t have too. Let’s not forget, we are talking about a Turn5-6 win if Russia isn’t played perfectly.
Time is in Germany’s favor. There is no rush. Continue to press out mec from the other 2 factories and while Russia collects in the single digits locked down with 3 bombers until enough fighters show up to force Germany to simply send escorts. You have to put at least 9 fighters before Germany has to produce an extra fighter to escort…buy by then, they may simply elect to have bombers escort…themselves!

I do get to hop on there occasionally and I am fairly certain I have seen you 1/2 the times, but my folks are visiting to see their grandkids, so my evenings are shot.

Operation dark sky has begun with ghr2, I would play more than one game at a time, but I simply have too much crap in my life to play more than one game at a time and to really play it and think about the moves.
I hope others begin to experiment with this strat and give us feedback. I am curious to see if the community comes to the same conclusion or if there is a counter and I just noobed it.
