    • RE: A question of honor

Unfortuantely this game doesn’t give points specifically for force preservation.  That I suppose is the advantage gained by the A&A campaign games (currently Guadacanal) that link the minis to the board game.  Then the points you get in a minis game are determined by the pieces on the larger strategic map.  Alternatively look at the hospital discussion again.

There must be a better way for the minis commander to win without wasting his most valuable manpower.

Winning and honour are not nessesarily linked.  Ones own soldiers are often expended to win but it can’t be done honourably if you are willingly throwing away their lives if alternate means are available.

    • RE: Battles we are winning or losing. Assesment and discussion.

He won the tank war but lost against my infantry.

This is the second game where my Germans have won against literally 2-1 numbers by taking a key defensive position and using it aggressively towards the end of the game.

Everything (including tanks) is there to support the guy on the ground.  Also the point values are fairly well researched on each piece where good troops can beat numerous bad troops.

    • RE: Hospitals

I too have been thinking about this.  What about a casualty evacuation system that removes the dead from the battlefield.  One infantry unit could move another away from contact towards the rear.  A vehicle (good job for the new trucks) could then speed the dead units to the rear where points are gained for succesful evacuation.

    • RE: Making a map

I picked Sicily mainly because my Canadian Regiment made a name for itself there in the weeks following Operation husky on 10 July 1943.  I’ve toured several of the battle sights there as well.

Remember that with only a few units to choose from at this point, its ok to mix and match nationalitys to get a better playing force.

I’m no aircraft expert but my fairly extensive WWII history knowledge has always made me believe that the Stuka should be more powerful in this game

    • RE: Could someone PLEASE answere this question??

      Get into those rules again.

Movement phase, your turn.  You move any or all pieces that are allowed to move (no shooting).  Movement phase, the opponents turn, they move any or all pieces that are allowed to move.  Assualt phase, your turn, move or shoot with any or all of your pieces.  Same for the opponent.

There are of course special abilities and situations (like defensive fire) that cause minor alterations to this.

Enjoy the game.  I’m hooked too.  Go at it slow until you feel comfortable with it.  Then see my Kursk entry below.

Do you alter your force or your tactics when you learn what map yopu are playing on?

Anybody going to be near Peterborough Ontario on August 16th?

I’m running this Battle of Kursk in an all day game with 1750 German point and 1735 Russian point armies.

    • RE: What a dummy

I had hoped for a more positive take.  Honestly, I am not concerned that my tanks are hollow (ref his comment on the models) as I’m after playability instead.

      everyone has an opinion

    • RE: What to buy ?

I’d stick with just the new sets if I was just getting into it.

From the old sets I consider all of the soldiers and aircraft to be just fine.  It was only the vehicles that had some wonky scale issues.  You may want to pick up old sets only if you get right into the game (which we hope you do) and if you find them for less money per booster than the new sets.  Some people go after specific pieces on ebay or by trades.

Stay away from the original starter pack because of rule advancements and hex map changes.

      Enjoy the game

    • RE: Rommel, 12th SS and Normandy

      @Crazy:

I believe that old Joseph Stalin would probibly eaten a bullet instead of Hitler, to avoid capture, because Russia would have been on its’ own, no peace could have been brokered between those two.

Russia would have beat the Germans on their own even without a western front.  It is true that the Husky landings caused Hitler to falter on Cittedelle etc etc but given another year or two Russia would have come out on top.

What a difference that would have made in the world.

    • Ammo and Fuel Dumps

I like to use the ammo and fuel dumps.  They are priced at 10 points I suppose for the average 100 point force.  For my 1100 point Russian force being constructed for the battle of Kursk.  Should I charge them 110 points to have the ammo dump.

    • RE: Kursk

This is fantastic info.  Having played through a large game against myself with uneven forces the Germans won but not easily.  I had a 1700 point offensive orientated German army beat a 1100 point defence orientated Russian army.  My board as mentioned is 24 hexes wide by 48 hexes long with the attack going the length of the board.  The Russians set up on one half and the Germans deployed in the first quarter of the opposite end.  This gave a 12+ hex standoff on turn one.  The Germans were ground up a bit but were still very superior at game end.

Question on the use of minefields etc in the defence of this game.  What would you think of giving the Russians 200 points in barricade defences (AT barricades, minefields and wire).  At 2 points per minefield that could build an uninterupted 4 rows of hexes line or even more if it was spent on AT barriers (1 point each) or wire (.5 point each).  Would this give adequate simulation?

Would this 1300 point defence hold against a 1700 point offence?

    • RE: AAM at Historicon 2008

For three days of gaming I’d be very tempted to make the nine hour trek.

We need to convince WotC to make it worth our while to come in and support the cause.  If Steve had four to six extra adults gaming all sorts of AAM scenarios he could open a big booth beside the main stage.

On 23 August in Peterborough Ontario there is a Militaria sale (badges books etc) and I’m setting up my model of the Moro River (see links to 3Dbattle space somewhere below) and playing for the day.  It might generate some business for the local store and help me find some more local players.

Just when I thought I might trade away the fleet for more AAM out comes a list of ships that reinvigorates me. I’ll be splitting a case with another guy.

      I’ve plenty enough to play.

I like both modes of travel but I’m a soldier.  My son joined the Navy instead.  I play both but I play the army game more!
