    • RE: Play by post or email

So, after much technical help from Motdc, I’m sorted (except for the dice rolling) to play this game by email with Motdc test game.  Are there any takers out there.  I expect it will take a couple of tries to smooth out the mechanics, just like playing any game.

Reply through here or my email is also listed in my info.

Thanks for the info and the reminder of the front page!

I’m looking forward to the consolidated rules book.  I assume it has all the errata which will make it easier to play without searching out the newest bits.

Although I most often build my own maps, I’m a lover of maps and am looking forward to these new ones.

No mention of more for the miniature navy this year though.

    • New sets?

Anyone know about either of the following?

AAMiniatures future sets and release dates.  Or has this game run it its production course?  For a while these came out pretty quick.

AA Naval Miniatures future sets and release dates.  I’m wondering how popular this has become in comparison to AAMiniatures.

So I’ve played out these two fleets again in the same setting with the islands.  This time the battlship heavy Axis fleet powered through the Allied fleet.  Two of three battleships were damaged but not crippled.  The entire allied fleet was sent to the bottom.

I wonder if there is two much firing for the amount of movement allowed.  This particular scenario is easily completed in 4 turns.  Playing this game verses the AAM land based troops seems too easy.  In the land AAM you get the options to move or shoot and can introduce heros or paras at appropriete times.

How do we make it less chancy?

We fought through this again with the same fleets. Only difference was a series of islands across the center of the chart and three objectives, one in each of the safe passages created between the islands.  At one point line of sight was blocked by an island.

Still too much in the dice I think.  No aircraft shot down and few aborted.

      One allied cruiser sunk

All four Axis ships sunk in four turns.  The air attacks were extremely effective as the only surface damage to an Axis ship came from a cruisers torpedo

Axis Fleet, 3 x battleships - Bismark, Scharnhorst, Vittaro Veneto and 1 x cruiser - Koln.

      Alled Fleet, 2 x carriers - Princton & St Lo, 2 x cruisers - Sydney and Ajax, 1 x destroyer - Javelin,
      Allied Aircraft, 3 x Swordfish, 3 x Devastators, 2 x Dauntless and 1 x Hurricane fighter.

Both fleets 150 points.  Aim - control single objective marker in center of open sea.

Allied limitation, only three carrier based flights meaning that turns 2 and 4 that six flights were rearming on land.  For preservation the carriers did not move from their initial positions until turn # 4 as there were chased down.

Allied Intent, swarm the enemy fleet with at least four flights per sector.  That way the enemy fleet of two ships in that sector may shoot down or cause two flights to abort while the other two could continue to attack.

      Axis limitation, no air.

Axis intent, to muscle their way into the allied fleet and blow it out of the water.  This was accomplished on turn 2 when the two allied cruisers and the allied destroyer were ripped apart by surface  gunnery.  leaving only the aircraft carriers to go after the objective (not).

throughout the aircraft tried hard but only caused minor damage to the battleships.  Surprisingly, none of the antiair fire managed to shoot down any allied aircraft though about 40% of all attacks were forced to abort.

I’m going to play this through a few times to see if it is still all in the dice.

Are there any similar experiences out there?  The Battle of the Coral Sea was won by air power alone as no surface gunnery occurred.  I’ll have to check the books to see if there were Battleships involved.

    • RE: Un-Bending Ships

Minor bends seem to come out just by working them with my warm hands.  I expect hot water will soften the tougher bends.  In general I don’t think I’ve many I would consider to be badly bent.

    • RE: Back to Basics

When you set up a game in this manner you need to look at the ground in more detail.  What cover, obstacles and distances are there to use or overcome. During my junior officer training days we learned to use COPPED to make basic assesments of the situation.  The neumonic can be applied to the game board too.  Think it through!

C = Cover for you and the bad guys, (what hexes are good to control)
O = Obstacles (rivers, swamps, hills - for some vehicles, etc) Select your lines of advance before you start moving
P = Positions of fire (how to use the ranges best) Remember to site weapons in pairs
P = Positions of observation (which in gaming comes from our birds eye view of the whole scenario)
E = Enemy, what is it you expect them to do and how does that influence your tactics
D = Distance = time, if I plan to flank do I have the number of turns required to make the moves or do I charge in

War gaming can be used to train the military mind.

      What is the Aim?
What good and bad factors will affect the battle?
What courses of action do I have?
      What is my plan?

Do this for each turn of the game and see if your results improve!

    • RE: Axis & Allies Naval Miniatures

I’m prepping a couple of fleets for next week that are 150 pts each.  In one I’m going very heavy on the aircraft with 50 % of the units being planes.  In the other fleet I’m going battleship heavy.

Has anyone played enough scenarios to see any patterns as to what might be better.

I’ve never played the board game but love the miniatures and am now also able to battle on the high seas with the Naval Miniatures.

      Bring it on!

    • RE: Good Traders

I have made my first trade and am very pleased with how it went.  Herr Wolfmasterkouga and I have corrosponded about this for a while and reached an agreement.  We each mailed off our pieces and both arrived in days.  Even in war I like to place my faith in others and I’m not dissapointed today.

If at all possible it adds an extra twist if you can both make your deployments without seeing the others build.  Then only once you’re on the ground will your intelligence firm up enough to understand the opponent you have.

Thanks, I got the second set of instructions but have become bogged down until Friday.

I’m looking forward to sorting this out.

    • RE: Getting started

Just play a couple of simple scenarios as outlined in the Start Here booklet.  Then you’ll want to add more and more rules from the detailed rules.  You won’t learn it all in one day.  You and your opponents just need to keep the rule books handy and ask questions as they come up.  It’s far better to play for the fun of the game than to win.  this way you can discuss rule issues with your opponent without feeling like you are giving away tactics or battleplans.

    • RE: Getting started

Wizards of the Coast have us over the barrel when we start trying to get all the pieces but if you’re happy with a few I would suggest each get a starter and 4 boosters.  You can then each supply an army and pieces for play in different nationalities.  As mentioned being able to create a variety of builds at max 15 pcs is your base capability requirement.

As a game, I enjoy it quite a bit.  I’ve been a miniature gamer for years and have developed quite an 1:72 scale system.  This however is very playable for my teenagers and my friends alike.  I will not try to add up my investment so far as I’m having fun with it.  I do buy the booters by the case (12 in a box) to save some money.  You and your friends could order a case to split.

I’ve never played the board game versions.

    • RE: Which units are not worth taking out of the box?

I do remember some discussion to limit heros to one per 100 point build and someone else might have the official rule here.

Personally I’m good with any number a person wants to purchase.  As for the 5/5 guys vereses the 4/4 guys.  This is reality on the battlefield and I’m also okay with mixing these.  The low end guys have value is paticular scenarios especially on the defence if you have given them a pillbox bunker.

Like tanks, you can spend too much for any one unit.  When that unit is lost due to tactical skill of your opponent or just plain bad luck with the dice a huge point value of your army is also gone.

I kind of like the new A&A Naval Minis where you collect victory points based upon the purchase point value of the ships you sink.

    • RE: Which units are not worth taking out of the box?

All the pieces are worthwhile if you plan to play in that theater of war.  Some only shine when you put army building restrictions based upon year or a particular scenario in place.  Generally I like fewer, higher priced (skilled pieces) but have also had very good results with a variety of units.

I’m not much on the Pacific theater but have forced myself to play those pieces with some fun results recently.

I tend to build in Infantry Platoon and Tank Troop organizations and therefore try to create multi unit groups.  Say an Eagle Eyed NCO, with 3 x Canadian Infantry plus another capability or two as I figure I might need them.  Like a sapper.  Therefore one of anything is generally useless.  Likewise with the tanks, I’ll play them in pairs at a minimum.

This is probably why I’m a miniature gamer.  I’m such a technophobe.  I’ve downloaded this and that according to my understanding of the instructions to no avail.  You others are going to need to sort this one out.  Good Luck, I’m still interested.
