    • RE: Odd calculator for a single round of battle

Of course there is. I rely on a tiny microchip that was implanted into my brain when I was a child. It’s specifically designed to calculate the odds of winning Axis&Allies battles. It works on a simple principle: addition of fractions. Ha!

Please excuse the sarcasm :D , but the calculations are pretty simple. Men have a 1/6 chance of scoring a hit (they attack at one, thus 1/the six possible sides of the dice). Multiply the # of men times that fraction. Tanks and fighters have a 1/2 chance of scoring a hit. Planes have a 2/3 chance. Just add up all of those factors, depending upon what and how many units you’re attacking with, and that is the average number of hits that you should score. Decide which men your opponent will likely put behind the casualty line.

Then take into consideration the number of hits that the defense will likely score. Same thing, except defensive men and tanks=1/3, defensive planes =2/3, defensive bombers =1/6. Take that estimate of hits, and decide which units of yours would die if you did attack. Keep doing this (in your head) until it is clear who will win the battle. Perfect odds rarely pan out, so it pays to calculate a few extra hits toward yourself or round up when the defender’s hits add to a fraction.

OK, you’re right, probably quicker just to find some odds calculator. But it’s so much more fun to use the left side of our brain  Good Luck.

    • RE: Axis bid to Japan Rather than Germany?

No way, Leonidas. A Russian attack on R1 sets the clock back for Germany for an extra round :D . I also prefer the Eastern Europe attack. Russia can muster three tanks, two fighters, and four men. Odds wise, they should end up taking EEU with one or two tanks. Land the planes in KAR, move the four men from RUS to KAR, and put all eight men in KAR.
If Germany decides to attack KAR G1, that’s going to be really counterproductive. Not only are you using your fighters to win a land battle, leaving the bulk of UK’s navy alone, but you’re picking a battle that you probably won’t win. If Germany instead decides to attack Caucasus, they will need to move their plane over from GER or Norway. Once again, that’s one less plane that could have been used to delay UK’s naval invasion  .
To sum it up, a R1 attack (assuming no RR rule) delays Germany’s attack on KAR and buys the Allies a little more time to support Russia and put pressure on Japan.

    • Q: Combat movement rules

Everyone I’ve ever played A&A with has played that you must declare all of your battles during the combat movement phase. After you begin actual combat (rolling the dice), you can no longer pick and choose other battles.
Recently, however, I played someone I’ve never played before, and he claims that this is not true. “Show me where it says in the instructions book that you have to ‘declare’ all of your battles,” were his words. Now, I’m still sticking to my guns, because the computer game plays the same way. But technically, the book never does come out and say this (from what we could find), but each of the examples in the book point to him being incorrect.
A little help here defending my argument?!?..…

    • Q: General strategies for Germany

As Germany, I’ve usually tried to push across Europe and meet Japan near India. This, however, seems to give Russia an extra one or two turns to build up men in Moscow. Is it wiser to simply throw an all out assault on Moscow as early on as I can, or wait for the support of Japan? Japan just seems to have a lot less on their hands in the beginning of the game.
