I made a few big mistakes at the start with russia indeed.

Still think that money does not really balance the game as the can-opener is worth a lot of money.

hi! I have also been following the game with great interest. I have not been able to open the file, however I believe you have some possible improvements on your play as the russian. The two main points is that you don’t seem to scirmish properly, and you should buy more russian troops.  You way to often attack with 2 infs and 1 art. Those attacks should  be 2 infs and 1 plane. You should consider buying an extra russian plane.

When you have 80 IPC, and use 40 of them on the russian army in the west, it is not enough. I would build 1 ftr in scotland, 1 sub in the med. there is 13 areas you can place units in in west russia.  If you build 1 tac and 11 art, 1 inf, you have used 53  IPC on units.  that will give you a total of 69. You can use thee last 11 on 4 infs in china and egypt.

Using all of that on russia and gathering ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING in bryansk (with about 30-40% art and 60-70 % inf) you will be able to deadzone the the germans, giving you at least 1, propbably 2-3 extra turns before you have to retreat.  That is a massive swing and will counter the canopener. Deadzones are the only good counter to canopener that the russians have available.

Since you aloso know that the german will try for the middle east, it is very important to get the 2-3 UK mIC there asap (Iran, iraq and egypt). Once you have them, you have to fill them with troops every single turn. You have not done that. Building 6-9 landunits in the middle east every turn will block italy from doing anything, you can reinforce india from there, and you really need at least 30 UK landunits to head to caucasus when the germans break through on G5-7.

If you can do these improvements shad, I think you will stand a much better chance.

Yeah, I knew that Egypt was going to be difficult to hold for very long.  I was going to next focus on taking Moscow which is probably a three round campaign of attacks.  Eventually though it was going to fall since I had more planes than you had Russian troops.  Italy was going to build a factory in that region, assuming that you did take back Persia with a UK transport this round.  With so many Axis bombers, I could easily move my attack from all of the major battle zones.

Anyway, you played much better this time around.  Colt and I have been noticing a big improvement in your strategy and tactics.  Are you ready for a new game with +80 bid for the Allies?

Colt still needs to win his 0 bid game.
Will have to check where the problem is first and this gaming takes away a bit much of my time atm. Will be a slow game.
Think 80 would be a bit much but we will see.

Yeah, Colt made some huge mistakes.  I am surprised that he is struggling this much since the game should have been so easily won after the great starts by Italy and Japan.

+80 might be a bit much, but I would be up for the challenge.  I might have to surrender after a few rounds if I can’t make any progress on either side of the map, but maybe I will have a gameplan that still can succeed.  I will create a thread and post your bid when you have time.  There is no rush; this game has been taking so much time for both of us.

I didn’t mean to say you’re improving and I’m better. On the contrary, you showed I am much behind you in skill. I was mainly agreeing with ABH’s observation that you are getting better each game vs him. Yeah, little embarrassed at the number of mistakes I have made  :lol:

It was a good game to learn on.  I still gain so much when I play against the better League guys.

I should have softened up the stack a bit by hitting it first with Italians.  I felt that I was losing Russia back to that advancing hoard of Allied forces.  My German income was going to rapidly shrink.  That would give you more spending on the Pacific side of the board to contain Japan.  I just haven’t made it to such late stages to come up with good strategy.

gg.  I thought that you could have easily had it if you made a more aggressive push of Russia towards Scandanavia when I headed down to the Middle East.  Once those territories are under Russian control, the Axis is doomed.

I definitely will take the bait if there are 4-10 Russians left within reach of Japan.  Eliminating that many guys prevents effective counterattacks as Japan slowly pushes west.  With this scenario, it is tough for Japan to win in the Pacific, but the J1 attack on Russia will reduce the number of Russian soldiers in Moscow by a dozen or more when Germany inevitably pushes there.  3-8 IPC of lost income per turn for six rounds is a major game changer.

Yeah, It is a shame.  I think that Japan was getting out of control, but it would have been fun to see the next 5 rounds.

Sure, let’s flip sides.  You definitely had a fair shot at winning that game if the dice went less my way.  It might take me a while to respond since I am at a conference through Wednesday.

yea, losing china is usually a big deal, as it relieves pressure off the allies in the pac.

this was a fun game, thank you for inviting me to play. it’s good to be back again. as far as “flawless play,” well i doubt that, but appreciate the compliment. it definitely helped to be playing ONLY one game, instead of my usual 8 to 10 games!

I tried an attempt on Trans-Jordan and failed.  I concede the game.  If only I had better play in China then the US would have had to put more money into the Pacific and Germany could have held on.  Your game play was too flawless.
