    • RE: What is your biggest comeback in Global 40?

The Allies were doing great in the Pacific with India recaptured and the Money Islands liberated. Unfortunately Egypt had fallen and the dwindling forces in Moscow were surrounded by Germans.

The Japanese opened the attack on Moscow with a kamikaze air strike that should have strafed off enough soldiers to make it completely undefendable against Hitler’s ground forces. Snake eyes. Lots of snake eyes. A row of snake eyes from AA guns obliterated most of the Japanese attacks before they could even attack. The survivors mostly missed. About 12 Russian troops should have been lost, but instead only 2 were killed in this suicidal raid.

Still, Hitler had a 99% chance of conquering Moscow and winning the game the following round. Again, dice saved the Allies. The Axis forces had awful luck, and Moscow remained above with just one defender preventing capture.

Soon after, the Allies steamrolled into France, liberated Paris, and moved on into Berlin. Game over.

Oh, I just noticed you wanted to know about my biggest comeback, not defeat.

    • RE: Pacific so small

I would definitely take playability over hyper-realism. It is easy to create a game that is so detailed and accurate that it takes years to complete one match. Or if you want it even more realistic, read a history book.

Sadly not many of us can talk to veterans who survived the war and are still alive. My grandpa was just 11 when he was conscripted, and died soon after in the Eastern Front.

@dazedwit it is part of the journey. Have fun doing it your way and experimenting with unusual tactics. Your enthusiasm for the game is contagious and refreshing.

At some point you will start playing people better than you, get mad that you lose all the time, and then come back here to see what the top players use in their strategies. Then you find even better people and need to evolve to the next level, perhaps.

I still have fond memories of the Denver area meetup where we played OOB, ate pizza, and at some point yolo’d a big battle in the Pacific because someone wanted to get home.

Much more entertaining than the delicately balanced matches in the League, which seem to inevitably come down to a small miscalculation, or a massive 50/50 battle where someone gets lucky and wins.

@AndrewAAGamer not much need for a bid when just starting out playing. The game is quite balanced before you figure out the metas for the Axis.

@AndrewAAGamer the game is different when you are first learning, and playing against yourself. Fun to try out radical ideas, especially when you are guaranteed victory regardless of the outcome.

I am glad to see new A&A.org members with so much energy and enthusiasm. The forum has been mostly dead for a few years without such folks posting “bold” ideas.

@gamerman01 let me guess… you got badly diced again by a destroyer in your playoff game?

I got absolutely diced in every battle, and then noticed that I was playing a local match without the dice server on. Reran the turn officially and got more normal luck :)

@crockett36 been to the SpaceX facility in LA. Quite interesting, they hire kids straight from college with zero experience, work them at low wages for 80 hours per week until they quit after a few years, and somehow succeed getting to space. Not recommended for either a place to work or as a customer. They keep messing up converting pounds to kilograms so I can’t figure out their actual requirements. Also the Nazi issue…

I have played some house rules but never enjoyed them as much as OOB with bid.

@crockett36 probabilities can assume only positive outcomes (high number of tech roles) which is a one-tail test. Or they can look for the chance of EITHER a good or bad outcome which is a two-tail test.

For example, you might have a 3% chance to have the Germans get diced in Paris, but a 6% chance for either a good Axis OR a good allied outcome.

@mikawagunichi oops, realized your Moscow planes can scramble. Undoing the Bryansk battle regardless of results. pre-dice role.

@AndrewAAGamer doing a one-tail or two-tail test for probability? In the military we usually prefer more tail.

If you haven’t gone yet, tip the carrier and lose one fighter. Max D next turn if the fight goes on.
