    • RE: AA 1914- WW1 ANNOUNCED!!!

      @Clyde85:

I have spent the last year and a half working on a board game based around The Great War. I have a map drawn up, rules typed up, and have spent hours play testing the setup and various other rules.  I was hoping to get this game published with in the next year or so. Seeing this announcement brings that dream to an end. The Great War had always been an intensely interesting period of history for me and I have read a mountain of historical works on the subject. I hope that Mr. Harris dose a good job and doesn’t rely to heavily on his WW2 infatuation to create this game. I will more then likely buy a copy but will also likely be its harshest critic.

There is room in the market for more than one game set in WW1. Look at the large amount of WW2 games there are out there. If something’s good - it’s good. Don’t go giving up; you may have done something quite different (or even better) than what Larry does…

I don’t think this game is going to fully satisfy my expectations…especially the “no gas” thing.

This is just one way in which your game might be different.

I want my toys-in-a-box. I hope they have little plastic toys for this game. I would really like to have seen little Zeppelins. Sounds like no-go.

Not sure why they would remove things like gas attack from gameplay. I can understand the extremity of it, but it was such an integral part of the warfare.

    • RE: Quick historical question about WWII

Lets pretent Hitler was never born and the Weimar was in power.

As soon as you do that all events which follow change, so you can no longer use the same history for the hypothesis, since all of the events that followed were dependent on Hitler. No Hitler = no 1939 invasion of Poland. Other events maybe, but not the same. For all we know if Hitler hadn’t been born, Germany may have been invaded by Russia and the cold war may have been between a German victor and the US.

Hypothesis and theorizing aside: Germany was defeated in North Africa and Stalingrad at the end of 1942 / the start of 1943. At that point any chance of an Axis victory was lost (the Japanese were also experiencing reversals of fortune in the Pacific). The causes for the loss may have started earlier, but that’s when the problems created earlier became physical fact.

FMG is making a miscelaneous pieces set that will include airbase, naval base, major and minor IC, and AA gun pieces.  Of course, you’ll have to wait until they get that actually produced.

      This rocks.

I assume you meant to put “owned” instead of “pwned” when talking about a Barbarossa/Stalingrad game in reference to Battle of the Bulge or Guadalcanal. I agree here too. At least for me, a game such as that would probably have owned the others.

Nah, I meant “pwn”. I was using netspeak: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwned

I think some kind of A&A Russian-front game would be the brilliant, but I don’t hold out much hope of seeing one.

I won’t continue, since I’ve made my feelings clear and this is just one of those ‘we don’t agree’ type issues. I also don’t want to sound like I wouldn’t be able to enjoy / play the game because of it, which obviously isn’t true.

However, I will still say this…

No, they’d probably, like me, not give a damn.

I think some of them, like some people here, clearly would give a damn. For that reason alone designers should take certain things into account. I don’t hold WotC in particularly high esteem, since they have a habit of short-changing the consumer on many small aspects of games which in reality would take almost no effort or cost to put right. Larry only has input which goes so far, and he has my respect. But Wizards do too many irritating things, and to me, this is just another one of them.

1)the Brit flag has been seen on almost every Axis and Allies game to date, and even if it wasn’t the UK faction has been represented in every Axis and Allies board game (except Guadacanal and maybe the Battle of the Bulge–-haven’t played Bulge). Additionally, the UK is going to be well represented in Europe 1940 (Global 1940 even more so!).

Not having the flag on E1940 is like not having the US flag on P1940. It doesn’t matter how many times it’s been on the box – the US flag has been there too – the flags are to represent the major combatants and to give the box a historical grounding. The box should represent the time and events in which the game is set.

2)I see nothing wrong with the Free French flag being the “main” flag here. Free French contribution to the Allied war effort wasn’t significant to turn the strategic tide, but it was enough to warrant worthy mention. However, all of that is irrelevant; this is the introduction of France as a full power for the first time in Axis and Allies. Sure, Italy’s flag might not have been shown in AA50 but you don’t see the Italians complaining do you?

Italy was one of the aggressors, and a poor one at that. Most of what they did was German-lead, and by mid 1943 they were out of the war. Comparing Britain and the Commonwealth to the Italians is like comparing the US contribution to the French. I think Italy deserved a flag, I think France deserves one here, but it really really isn’t hard to get all of them on the box. It really isn’t.

Really, I don’t see what’s so insulting about the British flag not being shown on Europe 1940. We know what it looks like, we know how much the British contributed to the war effort (at least, people who know their history do),

Because America has a very very bad habit of sidelining other countries contributions in that war, and this feels like more of the same. Anyone who didn’t know their history and looked at that box would think that Britain wasn’t even involved but that the US was. Let me just illustrate what I mean: This game is called “Axis and Allies Europe 1940”, right? America was not even involved in the war in Europe in 1940! And not even in 1941! But what do we get on the box? Front and centre – Marshall. Why? And we also get Patton. Really? Europe 1940 – Patton? Again – Why?

It is just a box, I just don’t understand why the flag-waving British patriots have to whine and complain about it.

Complaining is often conveniently written-off as “whining” when someone disagrees with the complaint being made, but that doesn’t actually invalidate the complaint. Plus, that was a very disingenuous depiction of what’s happening. Axis and Allies is a historical war game based on events that actually happened. I wonder how a US vet might feel if they were shown a box for P1940 in which the Brits were front and center and the US flag didn’t appear? I’m sure they’d love it.

If the A & A range ever came out with a Russian front game, I would fully expect to see the US at the centre of the box with a flag right there clearly visible. Russians? Do we really need to show them? We all know they were there. I’m not really worried about that happening, though; the US didn’t fight on the Russian front so they’ll never make a game out of it, even though a Barbarossa / Stalingrad game would’ve completely pwned ‘Guadalcanal’ and ‘Bulge’.

    • RE: AA Europe '40 Box Art

There isn’t a reason to omit it, but I could personally care less about its absence. I’m going to enjoy the game no less, regardless of what flag is and isn’t on the cover. If you really are going to make an enormous deal about it, write to WotC, see if that’ll help.

I seriously doubt they’ll change their designs because I complain.

And I’m not making an “enormous” deal about it. This is a thread about the box art for the game, so posting a couple of opinion points here is hardly making an enormous deal, is it?

Doesn’t mean all Frenchman around the world just stopped fighting.

Well, most Frenchmen, and Poles, and members of other occupied countries who got the chance to fight on conventionally did so because another country continued fighting without being occupied. Who was that country? It’s on the tip of my tongue… ah… nope, it’s gone. Airbrushed away.

China fought Japan from September 1931 to September 1945.

And didn’t they only declare war after '41?

So the absence of  a flag that’s been represented on nearly every Axis and Allies cover makes an entire cover bad?

And why has it always been represented? Because the British and Commonwealth were there for the entire war. The cover itself looks nice in terms of painting, etc. But as a single image meant to represent the entire European theater of war in WW2 it’s an abomination. It would be like Axis & Allies Pacific 1940 not having the US represented on the box at all.

We know what the Union Jack looks like, we know the contribution the British made to the war, we don’t need to have their flag on every single box cover

Or the Germans? Or the Americans? Sorry, but I disagree; if your cover depicts the flags of nations at war in Europe in WW2, Britain should be there. And it really doesn’t matter if we know what the Union Jack looks like, or who did what in the war - not everyone who walks into a gaming store knows world history.

There is literally no reason for the box to omit a major power. None at all.

And anyway it matters what’s inside the box, not the cover.

And what’s not in the box, judging by Pacific.

      @maverick_76:

You guys are reading too much into this, it is just a cover. What would be worse is they just didn’t have the UK in the game, pretended they were American, or even……French!

A cover that airbrushes out one of the major players is a bad cover. It’s not hard to get right. How would people feel if the US wasn’t represented on the cover?

      I know.

Have you played a lot of P40 yet?

Not at all, for several reasons: I didn’t buy it (yet). I was unemployed when it came out and it was almost 50% more than anniversary in cost; I have almost nobody to play it with, so I thought I’d wait on Europe and get them together and have a session over a few days rather than try and pull people in for one-side of the game (war). I’m a real ‘the whole thing’ kind of guy.

Not that I can see. When we got the low resolution pic, I thought I saw St. Geroge’s cross, but that was from the German flag and a red background

Wow. Just wow. Britain and the Commonwealth weren’t involved in the European / Middle Eastern / African war. No Dunkirk. No Battle of Britain. No Atlantic convoys. No German bombings. No African campaigns. No Greece. No Malta. No Alamein. No Italian campaign. No Normandy Landings. No Market Garden. Nothing. They weren’t there.

      Apparently.
