    • RE: Russia, round 1!

…not sure what to think, although I dislike the idea of risking so much Russian armor so early.

Neither Eastern nor Ukraine is likely to be held by more than one or two ground units…basically, whatever tanks Germany doesn’t manage to kill. You could retreat, but if the goal is to kill German aircraft, then you quite clearly have to take both territories.

Belo and Trannied German stuff to Eastern…Balkans and W.Russia to Ukraine…fig support possible in both places…BB shot in Ukraine if they really feel like it (though who skips Egypt?)

Heck…attack Karelia too, since Eastern probably doesn’t have much left.

That gives Germany a nice front of Karelia, Belo and Ukraine…it’s all lightly held, most likely, but without Armor, Russia won’t be doing much on R2.

To me, the “standard” G1 of 1 AC (or 2 Tran) and 8 inf is still optimal…basically all that Russia did was trade 4 tanks for 2 fighters. Sure other stuff is dead, but Russia’s offense comes to a dead halt, and Germany has some nice opportunities for economic expansion…especially if either of the Russian attacks failed.

If I were playing as Germany, and had this done to me, I would probably be happier than a lot of other Russian possibilities. I might be down two fighters, but Russia won’t be a problem for quite a while.

    • RE: How do you respond as UK to this german first turn?

      @Jennifer:

And personally, no idea if this is a good idea or not, I like to have an American Carrier group in the Atlantic as well.  I feel it gives me latitude to tell the limeys to piss off and do my own thing if I want too. (More like, Brits threaten northern europe, Americans southern europe/africa.)

If I have extra money I can splurge on such a purchase, I will buy an Atlantic carrier with America…but I dislike splitting the Allied focus. I’m in a game right now, where Britain has JUST enough money to keep it’s four trannys full, while America has a good 3x3 shuck through Britain, which will be 4x4 turn after next.

We’re doing far more to aid our cause working together in the north that we were when America was focused on Africa.

Hell, RUSSIA did more to liberate Africa from the Germans than America did!  :-P

      @Grimelark:

TripleA runs as on Java so you might need to download Java to run it.  I know I did.  Even then I had some DLL’s out of whack and had to do some cleaning and refreshing.  It’s definitely worth picking up though.  Is that how games on here are played?  Through TripleA?

I wish it were that simple…but I already have the lastest version of Java.

I can copy and paste the error message I receive in a post, if anyone thinks they might be able to make heads or tails out of it…  :|

    • RE: Can you move (non-C) sea units to a newly captured sea zone??? Tell me here.

Wait!!, you can move ground units into a newly conquered territory if they weren’t in the battle???

Yep….for instance, if you were Germany, and you took Eastern Europe back from those pesky Brits with all your forces in the Balkans, on your non-combat move you could move all your infantry from Germany and all your tanks from W. Europe into Eastern Europe (if you wanted to).

    • RE: Colonial Garrison & IIC still a dumb idea right ?

I’m actually playing a game right now where we had Chinese Divisions AND the Non-Agression treaty AND Britain built an IC in India on UK1

Japan is still doing well  :-( …took India, Sinkang is a non-factor, just broke the treaty with massive force in Bury. U.S. has Phillipenes, Borneo and E. Indies, but Japan will have Moscow in three turns, unless Germany falls before then (highly unlikely…not enough U.S. fleet).

    • RE: Colonial Garrison & IIC still a dumb idea right ?

Well, you really only have four options besides India.

Australia…if you’re feeling lucky, you can risk the Jap attack on your consolidated fleet and try for it here. Since it’s free, it’s no loss…and for Japan to take it, he must divert resources away from the Russian front.

South Africa…two tanks per turn can force Germany to commit more resources than he wants to to take Africa…but if he decides to ignore it and go all out on Russia, you might wish you hadn’t wasted your money on tanks way down there.

      E. Canada…if Britain manages to hold onto it’s empire (U.S. help is needed!) and expand into Europe (Norway, Eastern)…this can allow you five fully loaded transports into Europe per turn instead of four.

Egypt…Germany laughs evilly in the background  :-P

The first three all have their pros and cons…but in my mind, the Aussie one is best. If you kill the Kwang transport, he’s going to have to dedicate a significant force to kill it, since you can have it decently defended (on the ground) by the time he can get down there with any significant transport force.

And of course, if those trannies are going after Australia, they aren’t sending tanks to Russia.

If Japan ignores it, start cranking out ground troops until you have a fair number, then two trannies a turn and force that fleet to pay attention to you!

Of course, these are only really viable with Colonial Garrison. It’s not really worth it to actually BUY an IC in any of these places (and I’ve tried 'em all except Egypt)…

      …but if it’s free!  :-D

    • RE: How many ships do purchase as Germany in a typical game?

I don’t think I’d bother wasting money for Jet Fighters as Germany. Those fighters only purpose is to die…it’s just a question of where, when, and who they take with them.

Now Japan or America, on the other hand, both have the income early to spend $5 IPC per turn for a NICE defensive boost to any carrier group.

I tried downloading TripleA twice, and each time got the same error message, which prevented me from seeing the map or performing even a single turn.

I’m not good with computers…and I can’t quite figure out what might be wrong. Any suggestions?

    • RE: Why Nine victory cities

Let me put it this way…

…here at home, we play with 10 VCs…the only time the capture of Moscow (along with Karelia/India) did NOT lead to an Allied concession was the time that America had managed to destroy the Japanese fleet and occupy Japan itself the turn after Japan took Moscow.

With no ability to build, and no ships left, Japan would have had to have been liberated by Germany…and since Germany had no real navy to speak of, and had failed to take Moscow (resulting in it’s capture by the Japanese), there was quite simply no way for Japan to stay in the game…simply lose ground forces slowly until elminiated.

Unless your in a position to take and HOLD an enemy capital in the same round (or possibly the next round), the fall of Moscow is the end of the Allies.

    • RE: Tech

Rockets is pretty useless for anyone except Germany and Russia.

Jet Fighters is nice for Japan and America, who generally have at least a few carriers. The boost to fleet defense can be worth it.

Super-Subs is generally nice for Japan and America as well…the only other country likely to mass enough subs for it to be worthwhile is Germany, and if your doing well enough to be building lots of subs as Germany, you probably don’t need the tech.

I highly recommend Long-Range Aircraft for any nation with the cash to spare on tech-rolls, especially for America and Germany. It makes defending Germany from Allied invasion much easier, and aids greatly in America’s efforts in the Pacific (especially when coupled with the “Island Bases” National Advantage)

Combined Bombardment is generally useless, but Japan has a couple National Advantages that might make it worthwhile.

Heavy Bombers are generally not worth the double investment (dice for tech AND bombers), but if your going by the book rules, they can be quite powerful against enemy fleets when used in combination with your own fleet.

    • RE: German rockets?

Risky…but hell, I might just give it a try next time I’m Germany.

A little short on Inf for the first turn, but if successful, it won’t matter by turn two or three.

    • RE: SBR in AAR

One Bomber for Russia isn’t a bad idea, so long as no other purchases are immedeate…unlike a fighter, it can support units on either front without being out of reach of the other front.

Of course, there’s always Long-Range Aircraft, but in my mind, America is the only Allied nation who should ever bother with it anyways.

    • RE: How many ships do purchase as Germany in a typical game?

Our most common tech here is if Japan happens to have the Banzai Infantry and Tokyo Express NA’s, he’ll roll for Combined Bombardment on turn three once he has some spare cash.

That’s $15 for a nice addition to any amphib assault…I’ve seen stacks of ten destroyers for Japan by games end in such a situation…makes the Jap fleet nearly impossible to crack, and it will slaughter nearly anything on the coasts.

But I’m getting off topic…I usually don’t even bother with the Baltic fleet, unless I know Britain and US are coming for me from turn 1. I usually just go with a tranny or two in the Med to speed up the take over of Africa, then focus on Russia.

Does that revised Luftwaffe Dive Bombers rule include attacks on sea zones?

I’ve always been a little confused regarding planes moving through a canal zone…

…is it the same as ships (two spaces from one side to the other), or does a plane require a third movement point to get over the land?

    • RE: Japan landing in western US –--- how can i do this?

I, for one, LOVE the “Canadian Shield”

By the end of turn J3, you have…

      W-Can
      5 Jap Inf
      5 Jap Tnk

      E-Can
      5 Ger Inf
      5 Ger Tnk
      1 Jap Bom
As many AC Jap fighters as you feel like moving over there

And also a German bomber in W. Europe to aid against E. US

And it’s cleverly disguised throughout the first two turns by looking like the usual German fleet consolidation and Jap transportation through Bury…

Then round three comes around, and BAM, while busy trying to ferry gear to it’s Allies, US suddenly has a huge threat to both it’s VCs…even if he can kill all the invading force, it’s a small price to pay for keeping the U.S. COMPLETELY occupied for at least two turns, for a fairly small investment.

An experienced player usually makes allowance for the possibility when Germany consolidates it’s fleet on G2, but even then, it’s hard for the U.S. to devote what it needs to prevent this double strike from at least partial success while still supplying aid to it’s Allies.

And God help those Allies if D.C. falls on G4 or J4…  :-D

I dislike playing as Japan…mostly because I’m tired of always taking Moscow when I do…I’d rather take on the U.S., but that leaves Germany alone against UK/Russia…which is not always feasible.

    • RE: German focus?

We DO use NA’s, three per Axis power to be precise, and we use the ones from the Manual….

…we also leave out one per nation, (although that was only to make it fair since we HAD to remove Superfortresses)…

      …this leaves me with

      Atlantic Wall
      Fortress Europe
      Panzerblitz
      Wolfpacks
      Luftwaffe DB

Any but Luftwaffe would be of tremendous value to my plan…

Wolfpacks could help me counter US/UK attempts to take out my fleet, either as fodder or as effective ship killers

Atlantic Wall would ensure that US/UK must build MASSIVELY in order to make a landing to place pressure on Germany.

Panzerblitz would allow me to use tanks to trade territory with Russia instead of planes, giving me more money to spend, as well as freeing up my airforce for use against UK.

Fortress Europe could be essential to ensuring that Russia cannot advance without heavy losses.

In my mind, if I manage to get Panzer, Fortress and Wall, I can easily ensure that US/UK is no threat to me. If I can utilize Panzers and Artillery properly, I am confident that I can keep Russia from focusing too much on me, as Japans only goal will be full TP loads into Bury as quickly as possible.

Although here’s another thought…if Japan focused exclusively on America, would it keep Britain isolated enough for me to take him out before Russia starts knocking on my doorstep?
