There is a problem with the game running slow on win8.
      http://axisandalliesworldclub.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=64697#p64697

If the frame rate is too low there is some weird behavior with buttons ( like when purchasing units )

(edit1: do NOT use ForceDirectDrawEmulation on Win8 )
(edit2: it may be possible that DirectDraw is not hardware accelerated on your device… which means it’d be using ForceDirectDrawEmulation whether you select it or not. )

That’s all the help I can offer.
You may be happier using TripleA

    • RE: How much memory (RAM) does your computer have?

      Windows restricts the virtual address space of a user-mode 32-bit processes to 2GB * ( … in general )
Which it has to share with any imported libraries ( kernel32.dll, user32.dll, etc. )

It would seem the amount of available ram has little to do with anything … because system memory is back by the page file.
*edit: clarification: if you have 512MB of ram installed a process can still allocate 1 GB of memory … it just “pages”… pages to and from the hard disk as they are accessed.

Does java requires contiguous memory pages? ( which would be stupid )

      • you can try setting the IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE flag in the triplea.exe NT header

      –-
My computer came with 1 GB or ram installed
I upgraded it to 3 GB
      I current using ~1.25GB

      Installing from the CD,
      the 1.33 patch,
      and the Starterpack

All worked without issue (here) on win8 x64

      “Can’t find Axis Resource 1!”

The game couldn’t find or open Data.mgf
That file should be in the same folder as the executable.

I plan on installing win8 sometime this week…

    • RE: Disable Java?

      the patch was incomplete.
      https://threatpost.com/en_us/blogs/incomplete-java-patch-paved-way-latest-zero-day-mess-011113

Disable Java from you internet browser, there is no reason to remove it from your computer AFAIK
      so TripleA will still work.

If being able to host without port forwarding is too far out of reach,
how about a dedicated server with remote admin?

    • RE: Whats up with this Warzone thing?

I sign up with warzone and the buggers dont have their own servers

That statement doesn’t make any sense.

You do not have to join AAWC to play in the Axis and Allies channel on the Warzone.
Try placing “fun 2v2” as the title of your room. You can play with any rules you wish.
AAWC runs “squad” and “merc” games if your interested in that.

The place is fairly sparsely populated … I know.

I’m pretty sure e-Warzone is the only directplay lobby that is populated by people playing AA’98.
When/If e-Warzone goes down they switch over to Voobly.

do live games still require port forwarding?
maybe implement something like ice4j so TripleA can be more accessible to the masses

    • RE: In Search of A Real Answer to My Axis & Allies Problem

I don’t have the game but here is some generic advise:

Update you graphic card drivers from the manufacturer’s website (AKA don’t use Windows Update)
Try setting your desktop and game resolution the same ( hopefully at your display’s native resolution )

    • RE: In Search of A Real Answer to My Axis & Allies Problem

Sounds like you have the Atari/Encore/TimeGate Axis & Allies: RTS
so patches for the Hasbro games will not be of interest

AFAIK there are no official patches for Axis & Allies: RTS

have you tried right-clicking on AA.exe and setting the compatibility mode to Windows XP?

I have to turn off the computer

      … Ctrl+Alt+Del or Alt+F4

Do you have the unofficial patches installed?
      http://www.axisandalliesworldclub.net/downloads/Latest/AAStarterPack60.exe (includes official patch)
      http://www.axisandalliesworldclub.net/downloads/drawfix(3.82).zip

I don’t recall ever having that happen to me.
You can try to run your saved game thru the Starterpack’s corruption fixer

If your game is all patched up then if you post the (auto) saved game somewhere
I’ll take a look at it

For really long games people sometimes have to rebuild the board with the editor if they can’t continue

    • RE: Is it possible to play here on a Mac?

      Hi, welcome

I’m not the best person to anwser this since I’d don’t have a Mac and I don’t know what software they use to play “here”

      however, :p
I believe TripleA and GameTableOnline both run on the Mac natively.

You can play Windows games on the Mac…
by using Parallels desktop, VMWare Fusion, or Boot Camp.

    • RE: Latest Patch and Utilities for Hasbro Axis and Allies CD-Rom 1998

      mgf is a container
the movies are probably smack video files
you would extract the movies with a hex editor

you could probably rip them out raw by knowing a little bit about the smack file format
( the files probably start with a “smk2” magic )

I haven’t look at Iron Blitz
but the container format might be the same as in the first game
if so then see my source code (image_shader.cpp) for some of the internal structures of the mgf file

    • RE: Download 1998 Hasbro Axis and Allies CD-ROM Game

      @M:

the main menu is all glitchey.

Grab the Starterpack to fix that. http://ewarzone.com/aa.html

      @kurt3892:

a certain video card driver that isn’t compatible with the game.

the Intel GMA chipset has problems with lots of DirectDraw Games
The “Force DirectDraw Emulation” option MAY allow it to run with that card…

      shimrod,

you should be opening the games main exe ( AxisAllies.exe )

if you can’t get it to work then use
      The Starter Pack at http://ewarzone.com/aa.html
      which is pre-patched
