    • RE: Was it worth adding ART to the game?

I don’t know how you would do it, but you need to figure mobility into the equation. If you are the axis, the delay in getting material to the various fronts has to cost you something too. (Mainly IPCs) Maybe equal inf/art is a better offensive punch, but not if they are behind the lines. As I have read others post on this forum in my brief time here, a good mix of units is essential, knowing when and where to deploy them is imperative, failing to do either is disastrous. A failure to plan is a plan for failure!

      Back to ARTs specifically.
Russia can make better use because they tend to push units either east or west and they don’t really shift them back greatly.
US & UK can use them for amphib assaults to get more bang for buck than 2 INF. Or if they buy Asian ICs, they are good for trading territory, especially with fighter support.
Germany & Japan however have to have flexibility moving about the board and need IPCs fast. After their intial purchases, maybe through 2 rounds, the value of ART would decrease for them in my opinion. Move the front out and you need to get there more quickly.

Whadda you all think? Overall, are ARTs better for Axis or Allies?

I like the ART too. I don’t buy a ton of them, but they are nice to take with INF when you are island hopping.
It leaves the ARM to fight the land battles, where you sometimes need the mobility as much as the firepower.

    • Analog v.s. Digital

I’ve played many a game of A&A, Europe, Pacific, and Revised. A core group of my fiends get together every so often
and play one of the actual board games. (In fact, I am the only one of us to even play Triple A.)
After playing online I have told them of the benefits of saving games, playing by email, variety of games, no cleanup etc.
Not one of them appears interested in playing in these ways. To a man, they say its about getting to together,
feeling the pieces and seeing the entire board, and lastly the dice. Rolling real dice and the teasing and torment related to doing so.
I agree with much of it, but I must say the digital game has benefits that outweigh those. I mean we can still gather and drink a few
beers and play on screen, save the game if needed and continue play at our leisure. (And no dice fights, you know when you are accused of sliding, not rolling the dice, lol.)

Anyway, which is your favorite way to play? And why?

    • RE: Germany's wolf pack option rule

Don’t forget that a sub in an sea zone with an enemy destroyer present cannot submerge as a means of retreat. This goes for attacker
      and defender.

      @Jennifer:

Just because Germany has a fleet in the Baltic does not mean you cannot land in E. Europe or Germany, boys.  You can land just like normal, you just cannot get shore bombardments because you have to sink their fleet (which should be relatively simple.)[/quote

Don’t you have to win a sz battle here before you can land troops? I didn’t think you could just go in a sz a drop troops with a defending navy there. Guess I better re-read the rules.[/quote]

    • RE: Africa, should you buy an IC?

I would not buy one in Algeria
I would not want one in Libya
I do not care where you go
I would not own one in the Congo
Though you may think its very hip
I will not put one in Egypt
I do not like them on the continent
I do not like them own or rent

    • RE: UK1 Battleship?

How to take out the baltic fleet would really depend on what Germany puts down in R1. I don’t like the captial ship buy because after the fight is over surviving planes can be used elsewhere. The BB would not be as valuable as a multi-purpose unit.
Although the extra bombardment could put a hurt on Germany’s shoreline, its not enough for me to do it.

    • RE: UK1 Battleship?

      @Jennifer:

Why remove the Baltic fleet?  Are they any threat to you?  You can easily go around the fleet through Norway and W. Europe and not risk loss.  Meanwhile, if you leave the fleet, he might be tempted to attack you and give you the defensive advantage.

If you can land in Eastern Europe with UK troops every turn, or have the option to, Germany has to worry where they move their
army, planes, etc. (Perhaps they have to maintain a force there at all times?) And if they end up fighting 8 Brits there, they must divert resource from Russia. Plus, I want to keep Norway without worrying about Germany transporting troops over if I leave it a little weak one turn. No ships, no worries.

    • RE: UK1 Battleship?

My goal is to remove that Baltic fleet, not build along side it. After all, it is the only place to land in Germany proper.
The sooner the better. If you can get your med BB home, use that and all other ships and the 3 fighters you bought and the planes your started with and destroy. Buy transports before you attack, and on your next turn, you can proceed shipping the limeys
back out to war! (Well, that’s one way to do it!)

If you can own something with little or no risk, own it.
The Solomon Islands is prolly the most valuable freebie on the map.

      how do you get that?

Because of all the stuff within transport range of the Solomons.

Exactly. Every Island Group is within range, Japan’s homeland is in range. It’s the perfect base to start operatiions in the Pacific
because you can get reinforcements to it in one move.
Once you get a fleet assembled here, island hopping is next.

    • RE: Engalnd: 2 bomber buy?

UK is better off with ground troops and fighters. Maybe an extra bomber.
But those fighters will help defend land or even deter attacks in Russia/Asia/Africa.
Plus a fighter’s movement of 4,  will help support those smaller spread out battles better.
(Like if you have an IC in India pumping out men and/or tanks.)

U.S. Can send more bombers in and they can afford them. But still you still gotta deversify your purchases.

    • RE: How much do the Axis help each other?

      Japan Can Help Germany:
Attack Russia as much as possible.  Bomb them too!
Try to get Japan troops marching across lower Asia to seal off Africa.
Occupy American West coast fleet so it can’t pull around to Europe so quickly.

    • RE: Aggressive America - how to stop it?

Every game I start Japan the same way.

      Round 1 = Purchase 2 trans, 3 men.
Attack Hawaii (sz only) w/everything except transports that can go.
Take China, and any walk-in aisian countries.
Shuttle everything to Manchuria (don’t forget island guys)
Have 4 transports at home and ready to go where needed.

I dictate to USA who is going to be agressive….

How do you people start with the Japs?

    • RE: Axis and Allies first turns - Germany

Would you recommend using a major HI invasion with this IC strategy to press US on both sides? It seems that might be the only way I can see that holding them off. Otherwise, anyone good playing Russia should be able to put a hurting on Germany.
I may have to try it though, just to play it out…

    • RE: Axis and Allies first turns - Germany

Can someone explain to me why (under what circumstances) Germany should ever build an IC in Western Germany? To me it sounds like a waste of money considering you have 2 already right next door. I cannot see a scenario in which this is not a waste of money.
But I am willing to hear a strong argument, and I have not yet.

    • RE: Russia Round 1 Attacks

Russia should try to keep most attacks on Germany to the Middle and Southern territories allowing Brittain to come in and fight from the North. (Never over-extend your supply lines and always keep troops within one movement to Cacaucus)
That being said, I see no reason for Russia to capture Findland/Norway unless it’s later in the game.
