    • RE: Most Important Piece

The Russian fighter attacks at a three and is only going to be used in land battles like a tank, so no huge advantage to me. British and American fighters end up defending Russian territories in the majority of games I’ve played, so again no huge advantage. That British bomber has options, however. SBRs and Med/Baltic Fleet attacks or finishing off Africa. Keeping Germany off balance early helps the allies and a fighter could never have the impact a bomber can.

The industrial complex is the most important piece. You can’t build diddly squat without owning one.

I voted for the British Bomber for this poll. Gotta wipe out the med fleet early and it helps a whole bunch.

So, are you all saying that you are master baitors? Sorry, that pun has been hanging out there too long, someone had to do it.

    • RE: The Art of Defense

I feel that as the axis, you should be in attack mode with both countries. At all times if possible. Once you take a defensive posture, you are doomed. You may have individual territories you strategically or tactically need to own (Capital, ICs, Canal Crossings, etc.) but other than that, its balls out fighting. I would much rather lose in a blaze of glory than be whittled away at for 6 rounds sitting on a stack of chips 2 inches high. Even as the allies I try to attack more than defend. I like to force the action when possible. I admit with Russia you do have to play give and take, but even then I try to steer axis forces into attacks by my teammates. I play defense by trying to out attack the enemy and hope they blunder with purchases and unit placements/movements. It doesn’t always work, but you’d be surprised how hard it is to play/win when you are reactive and not proactive.
In conclusion defense is an important, but sometimes boring dynamic of the game.

    • RE: US / UK Strategy

Try throwing some limited resources towards an island hopping campaign in the pacific.
If you can start nibbling away at Japan’s IPCs, they will eventually have to address it.
When they do, it will take them off the task at hand (Asia) and should give Russia some breathing room.

    • RE: Eliminating a country, max ipc?

      @sanya33:

      a couple of questions:
      1. usa takes over japan and eliminates all their men. german slowly comes back and claimes japan land and eventually gets tokyo back (by a battle usa vs germany). What happens now? does this land go back to japan even though they have no men left? I was under the impression whoever wins the battle claims the land and it doesn’t matter who the original owner is. If this is true then once your country’s men are completely eliminated is it far to say they are out for the rest of the game?
      2. once germany hits 63 IPCs do they still collect IPC when they claim more land? or is the max 63 IPCs no matter what?

i look forward to your response.

      WOW. Where to start…
Question 1. If you lose your capital (Japan in this case) you collect no income but you can move any existing pieces you have. You can do combat and/or move units including AA guns and ships in your non-combat phase. Once all your pieces are gone, you sit and wait basically. Now, if your partner liberates your capital, (Take it back, as you described above) it brings you (Japan) back into the game. On your next turn, if it is still owned by you, you collect income for whatever land you own. Then you return to normal game play as long as you own it.

Question 2. There is no limit for IPCs for any country. The more land you own the more you make. You will need to use an extra marker so that the total of the 2 markers equals you currently IPC income. (Easiest way to do it)

      Hope that helps…

Please read and understand the manual, as I think you may have more issues than these.

    • RE: J1 Mainland IC

      JAP RD1: 3 trans, 2 inf
           RD2: All Ground Troops
RD3: IC Manchuria, Trans, as many tanks as possible 2 or 3 if things are going good)

I usually put an IC on Manchuria on RD3.
I make major push north with recently landed troops then new factory output.
Next goal is IC in India (by RD:5), so I start shuttling troops from the homeland, south.

BTW-Make sure you only buy ships when the fleet is going to be there to protect them!
(I have made the mistake, usually prompted by a few brew-ski’s)

The reason I like this method is that having the Northern IC frees my fleet to stay south if needed to capture TJ,Persia,Africa etc. I still get troops pushing their way to Moscow, while I attack the soft underbelly of Asia!

    • RE: Germany Keys

What about a BB in the Baltic? Has anyone ever tried it? (I haven’t)
Takes to hits to kill, plus the offense fire power to attack in concert with
some planes means you might be able to move the fleet around a bit.

On the down side, 24 beans gone leaves a G1 purchase with 4 inf and a art.
That may be too little against Russia.

If anyone has tried this, please share your results.

      Did someone say breasts?  :-D

Errors are part of the game, whether they are strategic or mathematical. And if you
don’t watch what your doing (maybe one beer too many) you could make a blunder.

    • RE: US IC in Norway?

What if US builds the IC in Norway, UK lands as many troops as possible to protect it, and US starts building ships in the Baltic? (Like a BB and 2 subs). Germany would have to fight them or move, right into range of the Atlantic Fleet, which if built right, could destroy them. A quick way to expose more German shoreline to protect.

Interesting, but would need thought out in detail to work.

    • RE: Japan getting troops to the mainland

      @axis_roll:

You didn’t mention a combination of the two: Transports first, then IC’s later.

India is the optimal Japanese IC location, but won’t come until round 3+ (usually)
mainly cause of the supply lines distance.

I agree 100% In my opinion, building any IC with Japan before R3 limits what else you can do. My rule of thumb is
that once the mainland buy (8 inf) won’t fill up my available transports, it is time to purchase a summer home!

I never used one during competion, but I’ve peeked at the Triple A one when just playing a game against myself.
Or I’ll play the computer once in awhile and check it then too. Kinda cool to compare results with projections.
The AI on that game needs some serious help, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers.
Whoever created Triple A deserves a beer! Pretty cool…

    • RE: Which country is the hardest….

Blanket statements like “Germany doesn’t buy ships” are funny, and can always be proven wrong by some wacky buy, but in this case I think a statement like this is reasonably accurate.  (A statement that Russia doesn’t buy ships could also be proven wrong!)  If you have been reading about German naval buys on these forums, perhaps you were reading in the revised threads?  Since I don’t remember any threads like that in this classic area.  I agree with Bashir that any German naval buy in classic is a bad idea.

Yes, it was most likely revised threads. I’ve seen Germany buy ships for the Med in Classic also with the idea of keeping Africa longer or to ward of Africa landings. (To varying degree of success, I might add.) But, that option is certainly more viable than Russia buying ever ships. I’ll stick with Germany being the hardest to keep, regardless.

    • RE: G1 fleet unification, how does UK respond?

As Germany, I would rather see UK planes than ships. Even with 3 fighter buy in UK1, who is to say that G2 buy doesn’t bring another destroyer in the Baltic? 3 Destroyers, 2 Subs and 1 Trans should/could put a hurt on UK planes, which then cannot go help elsewhere. Assuming UK hits with 5 Fig 1 Bomber:
TripleA says UK wins 83% with 2.5 units left on avergae Defender wins 13% and Draw 4%.
I just bought 2 rounds for Japan to get ramped up in Aisa and coaxed the UK into not buying a fleet.
I’m pretty damn happy! And, Germany still should be out producing Russia 1 piece per turn on the ground.
Of course, my Baltic fleet is likely detroyed now…

      @rjclayton:

Yeah, I would agree that Germany is the hardest of the 5 powers to play.

But the thread was about which capital was harder to hold, and I still think Moscow is.

I would argue that Germany is BOTH the hardest to play and Hardest capital to hold.

      AGREED.

      @Bashir:

Wich high dollar ships are you talking about nub? Germany doesn’t buy ships!

Re-read what is said. (MAY NEED)
A blanket statement about what Germany buys is funny. I’ve only been on this forum for a few weeks and I
have seen people posting all over the place about Germany buying ships, and which ones make sense.
And they are people who are not (nubs?) noobs like me (who has played A&A since the first edtion came out.)
BTW - How could Germany ever take UK Capital without ships? I know, they could take the Chunnel!

    • RE: Which country is the hardest….

Here’s a vote Germany. It is usually the main target of all 3 allies. Unlike Russia, it can count on very little help from it’s teammate.
It has to maintain 3 fronts continuously, and while doing so, push the eastern front away from it’s supply lines. Because of it’s location, it’s purchase decisions are more difficult than Russia’s.

Russia does not buy ships, nor does it have consider if it needs them, so Russia  has 4 purchase options (INF,ARM,ART,FIG) I see no need for a Russain Bomber, but make it 5 if you must. Germany may need those high dollar ships, and a wrong puchase or bad dice can waste tons of IPCs quickly. Lastly, even when boxed in, Russia can expect her partners to be nipping at Germany’s heels.
Once Germany is boxed in, it’s typically over.

    • RE: G1 fleet unification, how does UK respond?

Assuning no channel dash, would anyone consider simply buying a destroyer for Germany in R1 and putting it in Baltic? It would protect the the existing fleet, leave 4 bucks to spend on the ground. (As opposed to buying a carrier.) With most players using WE as an airfiled anyway, is the carrier neccessary if staying put?

      Potential GR1 buys:
      1 Destroyer (12)
      6 Infantry  (18)
      2 Armor      (10)
            or
      1 Destroyer (12)
      5 Infantry  (15)
      2 Artillery    (8)
      1 Armor      (5)

I hate, as Germany, to vacate the only port that defends the capital. Gonna have to really think about this one.
If I’m UK and I see that fleet move, I will kill it at all cost. And beg the US to help!
