    • RE: Global War 1936 Thoughts.

This is my all time favorite game!!! I have played several games and the Axis usually win, but my opponents are still new to the game.  We’ll see how it goes next game, I am supposed to be one of the Allies or Russia.  Personally, I believe that the game is amazing, a step up from A&A, and definitely worth it!

I currently play with the Spanish Civil War, Croatia, Netherlands, Ordnance I, II, & III, Gruppe Monsun, Turkey at War, DAK, Sea Lion, River Monitors, Elite Fighter Squadron, Manchoukou, American Minorities, Alaskan Warriors, and I just added Oil Wars (can’t wait to try it out).
Yes, I think Manchoukou is worth it. It gives Japan some teeth in the mainland, but gives the Chinese the opportunity to create partisans and create havoc for an ill prepared Japan. I also use a few 3D expansions.IfMy games take about a weekend (if they get finished). But that is not caused by how many expansions I use. It is caused BH players studying the board, developing strategies,  and making every move count.  Our last game, I was the Axis and was crushing them. Then, towards the end of the second day, they finally realized that they could work together to achieve a common goal.  They helped the US (the newest guy) develop a purchasing plan for the next several turns, started conduction specific operations with exact goals, and even passing written messages between each other so I wouldn’t know their strategy!  Moscow went from a sitting duck to the fight of the game.  I barely won thanks to cbemical weapons.  If they had played like that the whole game, Idoubt victory would have been so easy or certain.  So as far as is the game balanced between the powers, I think that it depends on the skill and strategic quality of the players present.  A good player playing Germany can seem unstoppable, but the collective might of the Allies can turn the tide

Jinx:  in my games, Japan usually tries to sack China to allow them a land path to India.  I really want to try your Refusing the Dragon strategy. How has its results held up in gameplay?

For you fans…HBG will be releasing a 3rd edition in the future sometime.  Right now they are working on other stuff, but worn on expansions always remains steady. I have been told that there is stuff in the works for South America at war and introducing the Axis Minors in a more prominent role in the game!

    • RE: Breaking News - Shapeways.com

In the traditional sense of a victory city not yet.  GW36 has objective cities (essentially capitals, but the list includes Nanking).  The other cities might be utilized in the new 3rd edition that is just entering development.  I will do some checking on that.  Some of the victory objectives involve territories that contain cities within them: KMT objective Reclaim China involves Peking and Madrid is contestable through the Spanish Civil War and the Spanish Civil War Expansion for example (the other examples are already covered by your planned list).

You are correct in that expansions will bring more focus to certain areas of the map and hence the local cities.  Turkey at War is a prime example that brings a lot of focus on Turkey as a power in the Mediterranean.  Winter War brings more focus to the Finland vs. Russia conflict and thus brings focus on Helsinki.  There is an idea floating around of another expansion focusing of the Axis Minors (so as not to hijack this thread, if anyone has any comments, thoughts, or ideas about this, please PM me).

Looking forward to your new sets!

I would say that it is close enough.  HBG doesn’t have anything closer…

Well, I was about to place a Shapeways order, but maybe I should wait.  How long until the new buildings are ready?

      Some other cities for consideration:

      Instanbul
      Madrid
      Stockholm
      Helsinki
      Beunos Aires
      Rio de Janeiro
      Cape Town
      Alexandria
      Bucharest
      Belgrade
      Sofia
      Smolensk
      Kiev
      Peking
      Vladivostok
      Singapore

(These cities are on the GW36 map in case anyone is wondering where they came from)

Try calling Mr. Friend.  The number should be on the website.  Just explain what happened. They are usually good about fixing problems like this.

I agree that the sheet would be unique in the market.  It would be nice to see lettering and markings for aircraft and ships of other countries as well as the US.

Oh, I almost completely forgot.  The 3D printed pieces are a little different.  Some of them will blend in decent enough but others will be noticeable (small price to pay for such cool, unique units).  A couple that I know first hand look a bit different is the Italian jet fighter (is a DARK brown), the Russian seaplane, and the Russian T-35 (both of which look closer to the OOB Italy color than the Russian color).  Not all of the 3D printed stuff is like that though, some of them match pretty good (Me-163, B-29, V2s…).  You should be able to tell on most of them from the pictures.

    • RE: Historical Board Gaming Piece Colors

I have bought a LOT from HBG.  Here are the colors I use.  Some of the colors will not be exactly the same, but close enough for government work.

      Germany - Black
      Italy - Brown
      Japan - Pumpkin Orange

      USA - Olive Drab
France - Blue or G40 Blue (not light blue)
      UK - UK Tan
      ANZAC - Grey/ G40 Grey/ANZAC Grey
      China - Yellow-Green

      Russia - Russian Brown

That is what I use and Have been happy so far!  Hope that helps.

THANK YOU!!!  Been waiting for this one to be finished.  I would love to see/read more strategy guides of all kinds. I am actually beginning to collect and compile GW strategies and ideas as I used to do for A&A G40. I also enjoyed Refusing the Dragon and can’t wait until I try it out against unsuspecting friends.

    • RE: Requesting New Forum Section/Topic

Speaking of new forums, it might be nice to have a second board in the Global War section.  That way there would be one for GW 1st ed. and one for GW1936-1945 2nd ed.  That would a lot in thread discussions and content where I have seen people get confused as to which edition and rule set is being discussed.

I would like to put in another plug for Historical Board Gaming.  They should be able to help you get a good start.  While they don’t have any Hellcats, they do have Wildcats if its any help.

How does each brand compare size wise with OOB A&A pieces?  I agree that both brands have good models, I just don’t want to get something that will look out of place once on the board.
