      @Amon-Sul I play Europe and I play Italy only, and then give all the allies to the AI on high, and give Germany to the AI on low. Then I play to see if I can save the game from the AI’s German screw-ups

      thanks for the game! It was quite challenging. I think the general issue is that when you go really hard for one region in the game, you give your opponent space to push in other areas. But your opponent has to recognize that early and adjust early otherwise you would win it. But even once I had thought I had you contained, it was a very difficult fight.

      And your willingness to gamble early also forced me to play very conservatively as well.

      yah I think you were definitely counting on luck way too much, I mean basically gambling a lot, and so that all went against you quite a bit, even though some of them did not go as badly as the average was indicating.

      as for your strategy, I think you overcommitted with Russia and left the eastern front against the germans really weak. in fact earlier in the game, I really could have taken Moscow if I wanted to. it was that weak. and in the end, all that Russian commitment in Asia didn’t amount to much against Japan.

      otherwise, I can see that you are a strong player and if you relied less on luck, you would do much better in my opinion, with more consistent results

Then my presence in the pacific is too week…I wanted to try a different approach but i screwed it up in round 1!

      I like to have at least one mech or tank bought on I1 so that it can canopen on the critical I3 and I4 turns.  I have had my original force get diced too many times.  A mere two Russian infantry can delay your plans to reach the Middle East.

      Hence, consider another option of 1 mech + 1 marine in BM matches.

      yes, BM adds some more stuff, but i would say a lot more than just a house rule, since half the people play it.

      If you discount the players in league (2016) standings who only played like 3-5 games, than there were about 50 players. However, there are probably around 1000 players throughout the world who play Global 40 2nd ed. (I can’t find the metric for 2017 league standings). In the Global 40 forum section, there are hundreds of threads and posts by people who haven’t played BM3 yet.

      Not everyone who even comes to the site plays triplea live, let alone pbem, let alone league. Also, when league players call an Axis and Allies game that is respected and religiously played by serious regulars “vanilla,” it might come across as snobbish. Even if not intended to.

      I’m trying to learn BM3. To me it’s a different game. And my jury is still out on whether or not I will like it. Played 150+ games of G40 2. A difference I’ve noticed for instance is I don’t see the majority of players do Tobruk or Taranto compared to Global 40. In G40 2, protecting Cairo is decisive. BM3 permits the UK more options. And even in this thread, right away buying a marine changes the game drastically. Now a cruiser has become a transport. Also, how many people do a J1 DOW in BM3 compared to Global 40? Not many.

      sub 3 mech 2 tank if you g1 dow russia.
      sub 2 bomber standard g2/g3 dow russia or invade london.

      The gold standard of buys. Everything else is sub optimal. Why is that? For the G1 dow Germany is attacking 7 infantry, france (all in, no normandy or southern france, can’t risk losing mech/armor for 2 or 3 ipc better to let italy do it and use arty round 2 for normandy) attempting to strafe yugoslavia, sinking one of the two fleets (usually the bship 2 cruiser), sinking dd trans with 2 sub, and sub to sz 125 to prevent Russia NO.

      For a standard game the 2 bombers have more potential. They sink naval, you could fly everything to southern italy and attack egypt, if allies park on syria with air you can attack it, bombers could bomb london and you can buy transports to take uk out of the game if UK disrespects you. The bombers are able to attack and take russia in later rounds unlike naval. Oh and bombing the Russians typically puts on a hurt G4/G5, which can occur before allies start flying fighters in.  You do whatever attacks you prefer g1.

      Since you use marines as an example, it seems you are playing g40 mod3, in which case sub optimal strategies become better… but g40 mod3 still heavily favors axis. Germany still brings in the pain train, except instead of a 21 ipc bid you get NO money. So initial allies attacks and defenses are diminished, this puts more pressure on the axis to play more aggressive, which they want to do anyway.

      Until recently, it was only bided for the Axis. But now, in more and more games the Allies get a bid. Let`s see what the best bid option/s for them would be…

      I) UK & UK Pacific

      Definitely the best Allied nation to give bid to. The ideas are planty, but let`s focus on the best:

      1) A sub to Atlantic and/or the Mediterranean

      A submarine in the Mediterranean can help strike Italy in sz 97 stronger than usual, but a submarine in the Atlantic can help strike both Italy (sz 95 and sz 96) and Germany.

      2) Land unit/s to Alexandria and Egypt

      An infantry or artillery to Alexandria and mechanised infantry or tank to Egypt can help strike Tobruk more heavily.
      An aa gun in Alexandria or Egypt could be of use too.

      3) A fighter or tactical bomber

      The ideas are Scotland or Malta. One more fighter at Scotland helps in the defense of sz 109 and sz 111 on G1, and helps in the defense of UK against bombing on later German turns. Also it gives it`s share to the defense against Sea Lion.
      The Mediterranean fighter gives UK more options either attacking sea or land Axis units, either defending from them.

      4) A transport to Union of South Africa

      It helps to move to action the two infantry from Union of South Africa on UK1.

      5) An infantry to France

      If France bids an infantry there, together with it, it can mean a lot in the defense of Paris.

      6) A transport to India

      To take Sumatra and/or Celebes, then Iraq, Ethiopia or Italian Somaliland more heavily.

      7) A marine to India

      The same as in the bid above, just lighter.

      II) China

      1) An infantry for defense

      Best to put to Yunnan, then Hunan, then Chahar, and the least to Anhwe.

      2) An infantry and/or artillery for offense

      Best to put to Kweichow, Szechwan, Hopei and the least to Suiyuyan.

      3) A fighter
      Good to have one more for striking Japan more easily. Best to put is to Kweichow.

      III) France

      1) An infantry to France and/or Normandy Bordeaux

      It can help to aid in the defense against eminent G1 attack.

      2) A fighter to UK

      It can help UK early on on defense, and puts more options for some French attack against lonely Axis land or sea units.

      3) A sub to Madagascar

      A good escort to the destroyer, can soon be moved to the Shores of Indochina/Indonesia or Mediterranean.

      IV) Russia

      1) Land units to Eastern Europe border territories

      An infantry (or AA gun) to Baltic States/Eastern Poland/Bessarabia to prevent (or back off) an early G1 attack on the Eastern Front.

      2) Land units to Eastern Europe offside terittories

      An artillery to Novgorod/Belarus/Western Ukraine/Ukraine to counter an early G1 attack.
      An option is also a tank to Novgorod/Belarus/Western Ukraine/Ukraine/Archangel to aid in the counter attack.

      3) Land units for striking Japan

      A mechanised infantry and/or tank to Caucasus and Volgograd.
      An artillery or tank to Amur.

      IV) ANZAC

      1) A marine

      If put to Queensland or New Zealand it helps ANZAC to take both Java and Dutch New Guinea on rd 1, and to take both Sumatra and Celebes on rd 2.

      2) A transport

      The same as in the bid above, just taking those territories more heavily.

      3) A land unit to Egypt

      An ANZAC artillery or AA gun would be good to have there.

      VI) USA

      U do not bid with USA. It goes to war late, and does not need anything. If U must, bid a small IC to Alaska  8-)

      Let`s say a word or two about Axis bid strategy in the Balanced mode version of A&A Global.

      Usually, players bid for Axis, so well stick to them first. Which nation is the best for giving bid to it? Which are the best bids for each nation? Lets see…

      I) Germany

      Definitely the best option for the Axis bid. It plays first, it has numerous attack options on it`s first turn, and it has to defend against UK ships and air early on.

      What are the best bid options for Germany?

      1) A sub (or two)

      A sub is the best bid for Germany. Germany faces 5 UK navies that can be striked on G1. Having an extra sub (or two) really helps, especially since 2/5 of that navies do not have a destroyer with them.

      2) Land unit/s for striking France

      An infantry or artillery in Holland Belgium and/or Western Germany, a mechanised infantry or tank in Germany and/or Greater Southern Germany can really help while attacking Paris on G1.

      3) Land unit/s for attacking Russia

      If Germany goes after Russia on G1, it is good to have an infantry or artillery in Poland/Slovakia Hungary/Romania.
      A mechanised infantry or tank in Germany or Greater Southern Germany can be of help too.
      Also an AA gun in Romania would be of help to move it to newly conquered Bessarabia.

      II Italy

      The next Axis power to which is good to give bid to it is Italy. Why Italy? Because it faces severe threats on land, air and sea from UK eary on. Also, Italy needs more transports and sea units to strike at UK faster and stronger. Let`s see what the best bid(s) for Italy would be…

      1) 2 marines

      A very good bid that helps Italy to strike Gibraltar, Malta, Crete, Cyprus early on. It also can be used for striking and/or taking (depends on Vichy) territories of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Syria. It gives wideness to the Italy early on.

      2) 1 transport, 1 infantry

      A similar bid that helps Italy to strike strong early on with more land troops.

      3) 1 submarine or 1 destroyer

      A ship more can aid in the defense of sz 97 that is sometimes attacked by UK on UK1. It can also help in later Italian moves, both for attacking and defending purposes.

      4) Land units to North Africa

      An infantry or artillery to Tobruk and/or mechanised infantry or tank to Libya can help a lot to strike Britain strong early on. The unit in Tobruk can also help to defend Tobruk on UK1. That seen, it is a good idea to put an AA gun there, to help defend on UK1, and in later turns, since UK has a powerfull RAF group near.

      5) 1 fighter

      A decent help from the air in attacking & defending against UK in the Med.

      III) Japan

      Japan is the last Axis nation that U will be bidding with. But, still it also can benefit from the bid. Japan does not need air units. It does not need more sea units too.

      It needs more land units to strike China stronger. So, the bids would be:

      1) An infantry or artillery

      Put it to Kwangsi and/or Kiangsi to strike Yunnan and Hunan more stronger.

      2) A mechanised infantry or tank

      Put it to Kiangsu to strike Yunnan and Hunan more stronger.

      3) An AA gun

      Best to put is to Kwangsi and/or Kiangsu to move it to Yunnan and Hunan and prevent Chinese to take those territories (easily).
      It can also be put to Jehol to move to Chahar for the same purposes.
