How much are Kamikazes "worth" in terms of IPC value?

TL;DR: I think Kamikaze tokens are worth about 4-5 IPCs each to Japan.

@AlphaKappa I would defer to people with more experience, but Kamikazes have two concrete or ‘hard’ purposes and at least one ‘soft’ purpose.

      1. [Hard] Sink valuable ships
With their target select feature, Kamikazes can hit large ships directly and ignore cannon fodder like destroyers and subs. (or maybe sink a couple key destroyers to allow subs to dodge planes and surprise strike a now-exposed fleet).

In the simplest sense, there are a bunch of scenarios for Kamikaze hit values:
      – Destroyer (8 IPC)
      – 1/2 Carrier; No lost fighters (8 IPC)
      – 1/2 Battleship (10 IPC)
      – Cruiser (12 IPC)
      – 1/2 Carrier causing 1/2 sunk Fighter (16/2 + 10/2 = 13 IPC)
      – 1/2 Carrier causing 1 sunk Fighter (16/2 + 10 = 18 IPC)
      – 1/2 Carrier causing 2 sunk Fighters (!!) (16/2 + 20 = 28 IPC) Calculating the average value here could be as simple as figuring out the expected damage per Kamikaze roll with an equation like $Kavg = %h x $Tavg, where %h = 1/3 (Kamikazes hit on a 2) and the $Tavg = ~12 (trying to place this near the ‘center of gravity’ for hit scenarios) . So with those numbers, the average value of a Kamikaze is about 4 IPC. Of course, you’d probably want assurance you’re going to sink those targets and not simply allocate one Kamikaze per expected hit. This pushes the value of Kamikazes down considerably, since you can’t wait to see if they were effective before sending out the next wave. The laws of RNG say that you’re bound to overallocate in some cases and underallocate in others. Finally, this assumes that these targets would even present themselves in the relevant Sea Zones. However, this objection can be resolved by qualifying the question to be: How much is a Kamikaze worth assuming that valid uses present themselves? I would gloss, then, that for this purpose ship-sinking Kamikaze tokens are worth between 3-4 IPC each.

      2. [Hard] Prevent Bombardment during Amphibious Landings

A single Kamikaze token can prevent all naval bombardment from a given SZ during amphibious invasion. Figuring the value in this use case is speculative and situational, but we can try with some big assumptions:

Lets assume that the targets for bombardment are always infantry units, so a successful bombard hit is going to cost Japan 3 IPCs. Because most contested amphibious invasions land at least 4 units with bombardment support increasingly likely in the mid-endgame where Kamikaze could happen, lets broadly assume that the average number of prevented bombard shots in a Kamikaze-contested landing is 3, and that those shots are going to be taken by 2 battleships and 1 Cruiser.

With these assumptions and the simplest setup, we can roughly guess that A kamikaze token used this way is worth $Kavg = Bh x $Tb, where BHavg = 1 5/6 (the average prevented bombardment hits = 0.66 + 0.66 + 0.5) and $Tb = 3 IPC (the cost of each prevented infantry hit), for a total savings of 5.5 IPCs worth of Infantry units.

The real impact of the Kamikaze in the case, however, would be how much extra the attacking player has to bring to account for the lost bombardment. In this case, that’s probably close to the expected damage that those three saved infantry are going to inflict on his landing force, which for a single round of combat against a far-superior landing force is about 3 IPC (0.33 hit chance/inf x 3 infantry); in a much closer battle (in which case, why are you invading in the first place?) lasting multiple rounds the impact could be closer to 6 or even the full 9. Let’s say then that our impact to the attacker is somewhere between 3 and 6 IPCs.

But finally, the spent Kamikaze token might actually hit something! If we go after a cruiser, say, then using the equation from 1. above gives an additional average value of 4 IPC (12 IPC cruiser sunk x 1/3 of the time).

This would give the average bombardment-preventing Kamikaze token a conservative value of 4 + 3 = 7 IPC, varying wildly by situation.

      3. [Soft] Deter Naval Incursions

With at least the potential to sink 6 escort ships in one go, Kamikazes have a fun ‘soft’ threat value in the game. It’s unlikely to come off that way, of course, and the threat dissipates with each spend token as the game goes on, but it’s at least possible that one single massive Kamikaze strike could net the Japanese player an incredible 72 IPC of impact or 12 IPC per token. This would be enough to swing a majority of endgame naval confrontations, and has to at least be accounted for by the US player if mounting a KJF. If I were the US and wanted to conservatively plan around a massive endgame kamikaze strike, I would plan to take fully three hits and so overbudget for that attack by at least 36 IPC. So for the purpose of deterring an endgame naval incursion, I would give Kamikaze tokens a value of 6 IPC each.

All of this asks what they’re worth, not what I would pay as Japan where resources are precious and actual units are worth much more than mere potentialities.

While my assumption-ridden stuff above yields a value of around 6, I would personally probably only pay 4-5.

We use them for German trucks and trucks replace the 3 (green) chip.  So a truck = 3 infantry.  They are a good piece BTW.

      @AlphaKappa:

That is so helpful!  Thank you for the analysis!

It was my pleasure. A chance to pull out my games and admire them? If I must…  :-D

      @AlphaKappa:

It’s too bad Avalon Hill didn’t print the new Anniversary Edition in the same colors as Europe '40 Second Edition.  I really like the lighter shade of those Italian pieces because they’re easier to distinguish from Soviet red-brown.

To be fair to Hasbro/WotC/Avalon Hill, all they promised was a re-print. And to a large degree, that is what the New A&A Anniversary edition was: a straight up re-print of the original go at things. Were there differences between the two prints? Of course there were. Were all of those changes for the better? I don’t think so, no. I especially wish they had kept the US F6F Hellcat fighters but instead we got more P-38 Lightnings. But overall, it was probably as faithful as they could do and a long shot better than either 1) not doing it at all (what a pity that would have been) or 2) just phoning it in and wholesale dumping all of the right pieces from A&A 42 and A&A Europe 40.1 Italy.

Instead, we got the original Anniversary Edition Italian tank, the M14/41. We got the Italian brown Japanese Betty bombers and Type 92 Howitzers (artillery). And they put them into a shade about as close as to the shade of the original Anniversary Edition Italians as they were going to get from two print runs separated by 9 years. And that meant that we got a bunch of Italian brown German ships and fighters. But we got a re-print of a game I didn’t think was ever coming back.

And for that, I don’t mind dark brown Italians. Even if I would have rather gotten the F6Fs and the Maroon UK Country class cruisers, I’m happy with what we did get.

We have a similar house rule that we use in our Events section. The number corresponds to the dice roll prior to the round beginning.

      Germany
3 – French revolt. French partisans are disrupting supplies from France. While Germans occupy France value is reduced to 1 IPC

      USSR
4 – Peasant resistance forces disrupt German supply.
Germany can conduct non-combat movement in only 3 Russian territories due to rail disruption damage. Only land units are disrupted. Air units are not affected. Germany can quell the resistance by sending additional SS security groups with a roll of 3 or less. Can happen more than once. Cannot happen again after the 3 is rolled.

      Japan
3 – Chinese partisans attack supply lines. No combat movement in China only. Air units not affected. Non-combat movement permitted. Resistance can be quelled by sending additional security forces with a roll of 3 or less. Can happen more than once. Cannot happen again after a 3 is rolled.

      USA
3 – If USA is at war: Roll 3 dice and total is the number of IPC’s immediately returned to the bank.
Anti-war sentiment is growing. Members of Congress and Senate begin to question America’s involvement in the war. Labor strikes nationwide cripple industrial centers The American citizens are tired of rationing. US government diverts resources to civilian population to dissolve social unrest among homeland. Combat is still permitted. Can happen more than once.

      China
3 – Loss of supply. Burma Road is closed this turn due to heavy rain and landslides. No IPC bonus applied for the Burma Road this turn. Artillery are not permitted for purchase. Units may still move and combat within those zones. Can happen more than once.

      UK
      3 – India revolts.
Gandhi and anti-war sentiment swells within the masses in India. Due to increased desertion by conscripted troops, India is now worth 1 IPC.

      Italy
3 – British special forces disrupt Italian ports with sabotage and increased mining of waters by submarine crews. On this turn, African supplies are cut off due to increased mining of the Mediterranean. Half of African income is collected this turn. Half of any other European territories without a rail line (continuous friendly land route to Rome) is also denied. Can happen more than once.

      Anzac
3 – Massive typhoon strikes Australia
100 year storm devastates Australia. Flooding and destruction unprecedented. Half money returned to bank to repair damage sustained from storm. Factories, ports and airbases in New Zealand and New South Wales sustain 1 damage each. Can happen more than once.
4 – British supply arrives. Australia receives 8 IPC’s immediately. Can happen more than once.

This attaches to other events that can occur.

The key that I’ve seen is the dam rifles like to peel from use and I do use my pieces a lot. So main reason why I asked if there was a better sticking primer.

With some specific parts of pieces, I think moderate chipping and flaking of paint is going to be inevitable, especially with the rifle ends of the infantry pieces.  Those end pieces (the rifle barrels) flex and bend around when being handled.  Therefore, you need to find a flexible primer and paint to work with that flexing.  Latex paint is one type that comes to mind.  This type of paint is used heavily by scale RC airplane guys (me included).  As a scale RC airplane is flying in the air, the wings and control surfaces get flexed.  Furthermore, fluctuations in temperature and humidity make the wooden structure of the RC plane expand and contract.  They need a paint that works with all this flexing and contracting so that the paint doesn’t flake off and chip away.  Latex paint.

I have not tried it on scale miniature game pieces, so I cannot say with certainty if it works just as well in this arena.  All you can do is try it and see.

      Cheers,
      Busarider

      @AlphaKappa:

I don’t like the large size of the OOB Dauntless tactical bomber piece.  I am considering replacing them with the HBG P-47 Thunderbolt or Helldiver.  What are the sizes of these pieces?   The P-47 looks bigger than a typical fighter.  Would it work as a tac?

I have the HBG P-47 fighters… they are the same size as the OOB fighters… by comparison, they are bigger than the HBG P-51, which is actually smaller than OOB fighters.  If you’re expecting the HBG P-47 to be as big as OOB Tac Bombers, you’ll be disappointed.
