    • RE: "Diplomatic Actions": For example, paying for a Coup to flip a territory.

      @oztea:

It could get messy, but would add some much needed flavor to the neutrals on the board.

It should be kind of an expensive move, so that if you’re putting a lot of pressure on, say, the USSR, it wouldn’t be wise for them to try to flip Turkey or whatever.  I think several player nations have the potential to have the “disposable” income to pay for such a thing, but it would all depend on the circumstances of the game.

    • "Diplomatic Actions": For example, paying for a Coup to flip a territory.

I think it would really mix up the game if you could pay IPC’s to attempt a Coup in either an enemy’s territory or in a Neutral country.

Perhaps you pay for a dice roll. The target roll would maybe be dependent on the IPC value of the territory and/or the amount of troops stationed there.

It should be easiest to incite a Coup in a territory with an IPC value of 1 or 0 that’s unguarded.

Perhaps inciting a Coup in an enemy-controlled territory would cause it to become Neutral, and a nation that makes a successful Coup in a Neutral country could then annex it.

This would make things really interesting as Germany could incite a Coup in, say, Saudi Arabia and then on the next turn, build a minor factory down there to harass Egypt and the Middle East.

Or Japan could pay for a Coup in Alaska to cause it to go Neutral, which would disrupt the USA’s income and bomber operations.

      What do you think?

    • A&A 1914 pieces in GLOBAL 1940 as Neutral Powers that can build tanks, aircraft

What do you think about using the new A&A 1914 pieces as armies for smaller nations in Global 1940?
As you may already know, the pieces that are coming out include new infantry sculpts, tanks (presumably Mark IV’s / Renault FT’s), artillery, “fighters” (biplanes), and vintage destroyers / subs / battleships.

When powers like Turkey, Iraq, Spain, Finland, or Brazil join the war, they are normally “absorbed” by a major nation. But what if they had their own micro-economies and could build their own “low-tech” units represented by the new vintage sculpts?  Which Neutral Powers would have the economic equivalent of a “Minor Industrial Complex”?

Also, I believe China had a substantial army post-1940 including many tanks. Am I correct about that? Maybe there could be potential for China to mobilize fully.

One difficulty in maintaining “balance” that I already foresee is the lack of additional income to the Major Powers that could normally be spent elsewhere on the board. How significant of a problem do you think that would be and how could it be dealt with?

Now I’ve gotta run and do some work today but I’ll follow up on this thread later with some more thoughts.

I’d like to hear your input about this idea because I think it would be fun to implement!

    • RE: AA 1914- WW1 ANNOUNCED!!!

      @almashir:

The combat system that involves only one round of combat is interesting.  Given how it would tend to have the effect of preventing territories from changing hands quickly, it must somehow generate massive casualties.

      I think that’s what Larry’s going for.

At first I was imagining that the static nature of World War I would make for a somewhat uninteresting game… but on second thought, it might be a really tense if both sides are losing massive numbers all over the place. Although the battle fronts might not move very much, it sounds like they will be highly unstable.

Yeah, I would have loved to get Zeppelin units but I guess their role in World War I was so minor it doesn’t really fit the scale of the game.  Cavalry would have made sense… I wonder why it was left out.

    • "Skirmish Mode"

My friend and I occasionally play Axis & Allies using these “Skirmish” rules (in the style of Risk). Thought I’d post them here for feedback.

      1.)
Choose any nation you want but make sure to leave at least one color available to represent Neutral forces (more on that later).

      2.)
Starting with an empty map (it’s best to use just one theater if you’re playing head-to-head), players take turns placing National Control markers on any territories with a value of 4 or less, spending a maximum of 25 points each.  Territories cost 1 more than their IPC value to claim (so islands and places like Vyborg/Bessarabia with no value cost 1).  Roll to determine who has first choice and then proceed clockwise.

      3.)
Starting with the same player as before, each player chooses one of their territories to be their “Capital” and places a Major Industrial Complex there.  If your Capital is lost, you lose the game.

      4.)
Each player begins with 10 infantry.  Once all of the players have 25 points worth of territory, take turns placing infantry one at a time in any territory you own, starting with the same player as before.

      5.)
The first round begins with the player who chose their territory last and goes clockwise from there (so the guy who got first pick of territory will take the last turn of each round).

      6.)
All unclaimed territories on the map that have an IPC value are independent Neutral states that can muster troops (of a color that no one is playing as, of course) to defend themselves.  If a territory has no IPC value, it’s considered to be empty and can be conquered with no resistance.
Upon the invasion of a Neutral territory:
          a.  Place 1 infantry for every 1 IPC that the territory is worth
          b.  Place 1 tank for every 2 IPC’s that the territory is worth (rounded down)
          c.  Place 1 fighter for every 3 IPC’s that the territory is worth (rounded down)
Note: Ignore the troop values printed on the Global map’s Neutral territories.

Example: If you invade Germany, it will defend itself with 5 infantry, 2 tanks, and 1 fighter.

      7.)
There may be a few other rules that I can’t think of at the moment, and I have to go do some work!  I’ll update this when I come up with more.
Anyway, post your own “Skirmish” rules if you have them!  I’d like to compare notes.

    • RE: New unit/piece ideas

Population centers are an interesting idea, but I’m not too crazy about these “house” rules (lol).
If you really want to have something like this, I’d like to suggest:
      1. Make it cost a little more or have each side start with a certain number already on the map
      2. What if instead of generating credits, it generates 1 infantry per turn?
      3. I would have it take like 6 hits max so that you don’t break the bank repairing it

If you’re interested in buying similar pieces, I suggest the brown houses from the World of Warcraft monopoly game:

    • RE: "Low Luck" variant that gives the player an interesting choice in battle!

Gargantua, do you divide by 6 or by 8?  Because I feel like if the player has the option to take the “average”, they would do that pretty often.

    • Rule clarification regarding submarines

This is from page 32 of the rulebook:
“If a destroyer is in a battle, it cancels the following unit
characteristics of all enemy submarines in that battle:
Surprise Strike, Submersible, and Can’t Be Hit by Air
Units. Note that destroyers belonging to a power friendly
to the attacker that happen to be in the same sea zone
as the battle don’t actually participate in it, therefore
they don’t cancel any of these abilities of defending
      submarines.
      ”

How could this situation even occur?  I can’t picture it…

    • RE: Hit-and-run Yugoslavia from G.S.Germany? Is the "retreat" legal or exploitative?

      Thanks for your replies!

Alright, well then following that train of thought, what are some other coinciding moves that could be made to do an effective G2 Barbarossa?

    • Hit-and-run Yugoslavia from G.S.Germany? Is the "retreat" legal or exploitative?

This is a hypothetical move I’ve been considering for Germany turn 1 and I’d like to know if it’s a legal one!

      Here’s a graphic to illustrate it: http://i.imgur.com/DOIEJ.jpg
(Purple route shows path of retreat)

So what if Greater Southern Germany and Romania attack Yugoslavia but then retreat after the first or second roll?  Could the infantry and artillery from G.S.G. retreat into Romania?

If so, I think this would be a really interesting strategy:  G1, weaken Yugoslavia with a hit-and-run attack and then set up your troops in Romania for a G2 Barbarossa.  Then on Italy 1, use 1 tank & 1 infantry from Albania and also some troops from Northern Italy to finish off Yugoslavia (also using 1 Albanian infantry to take Bulgaria).

I’m a big believer in strengthening Italy as much as possible!

    • "Low Luck" variant that gives the player an interesting choice in battle!

Tell me what you think of this.

For every cycle of combat rolls, the player chooses one of two options:

A.)  Roll normally and take your chances. (Relatively aggressive)

B.)  Play it safe but hit less than the statistical average. Add up all of the “points” from the units you’re attacking or defending with, divide that number by 8, and that’s how many guaranteed hits you get. Then, whatever’s left over, you roll for using an 8-sided die.

I believe this combines “Low Luck” with normal rolling in an intriguing way.
Should you apply steady, but slow hits that are guaranteed, or should you be riskier and try to maximize your power early on?

    • RE: One of my A&A friends gets frustrated by the randomness of attacks… H.R. help?

You know, how about instead of totaling up all of the attack points, what if you total up each “column”?

This would be splitting the difference between normal and Low Luck, so to speak.

What I mean is, say I’m attacking with…
      5 infantry @ 1
      3 tanks + 2 fighters @ 3
      2 bombers @4

The 5 infantry would have to roll as normal. The @3’s have a combined power of 15, so they could choose to do 2 automatic hits or roll normally. Then the bombers have a combined power of 8, so they could do 1 automatic hit or roll normally.

      What do you think?

    • Free technology?

Tell me what you think…  what if every nation (that still controls its capital) gets to pick 1 free tech every turn?

It would really add some variance, and it seems like very few Global 1940 games go past 12 turns, so you’ll probably be gaining new research right up until the end.

How do you feel about it?

EDIT:  I forgot to clarify, this would be instead of purchasing die rolls (not in addition to).

    • One of my A&A friends gets frustrated by the randomness of attacks… H.R. help?

As the title says, one of my friends who I play Global 1940 with gets frustrated when his perfectly-orchestrated strategy falls apart due to bad luck (and to be fair, he can often be a pretty unlucky roller).

I was wondering if there are any house rules that might reduce the randomness somehow. The only thing is that my friend would prefer not to play with house rules unless they really improve the play experience or are commonly used.

One method I’ve been thinking about, for example, is having “Supply” / “Zeal” tokens that a player can spend, mid-battle, to turn any die roll into a “1” (after seeing the roll).  That way my friend can feel like he’s at least making a calculated decision about countering bad luck.

I was thinking that nations accumulate these tokens during the Income phase, gaining perhaps 1 token for every 10 IPC of income… or something like that.  I haven’t thought of a great method for acquiring these tokens.

What do you think?  Any input or ideas would be very appreciated!!!

Ah, sorry to be such a boob.
I didn’t realize the game wasn’t released yet overseas.  So would the cost of shipping an American copy of the game to Greece be too expensive, or is it that you want one that’s printed in Greek?
