      @Brain:

What colors would you use to match the standard Axis and Allies game piece colors?

I just painted on a few spare pieces until I found a good match.

Fantastic! I love the later war carriers… And your camo, as always, is awesome!

Thanks - it was ridiculously hard to match colors. WWII “Navy Blue” is not even remotely navy blue. Most all decks were stained a blue color. And the greys ranged from all kinds of shades depending on which site you looked at. I finally found a site with some good images of paint chips and matched it from that (though going with a lighter color because size naturally lightens a color).

While I had fun doing the brown wooden decks of the earlier ones, I did do the Essex(CV 9). I used a dark German grey for the deck since, like you said, it wasn’t very “navy blue”. I’m still conflicted over my color choice on the hellcats but I have some Corsairs on the way from Trumpeter. I will try out a darker blue on a few of those.

      Page of interest:

      Excellent source for color matching.

What kind of time table are we looking at?

Usually when I start a new nation, I go through and do the cleaning/trimming part of the set all at one time so it’ll take a little extra time. But then again, the infantry are my favorite units to work on so I work a bit faster…

      …Does that help?

Hah me too. I just moved to the opposite coast to save up some money and ended up painting the minis to make up for my lack of gameplay. Good times.

Should have the Navy finished tomorrow or so.

Good stuff Variable! By the way, make sure you switch your paint jobs on the Guadalcanal Japanese and US cruisers… The molds were switched and the plastic colors are wrong. Compare them to other sets and you’ll see what I mean.

By the way, next up is the US Navy. Those will take a while, as there are 48 total ships.

In the meantime, you guys can duke out what nation you want to see next: UK, Germany, or Russia.

Can you post pics of each type as you go? I put some up of my carriers tomorrow. Can you do a different ship?

I actually do all the ships at once (IE I do the base coats, then all the decks, then all the decals, etc) so it’d be a bit difficult to do this. But they are coming quickly - don’t worry.

By the way; miscounted… There’s actually 60 ships hah.

      12 subs, 12 transports, 12 destroyers, 8 cruisers, 8 carriers, and 8 battleships.

You should paint the pacific UK just so you can finish the pacific game.

    • RE: Our Dream Axis and Allies Games…

Knowing it’s there and being able to being able to identify it are two very different things. Spies were an expected part of the war - even if nations knew there were spies amongst them, it was difficult to directly identify or locate them.

    • New Technology Ideas

I think there should be a new technology method to the game. I’ve had some thoughts about this in the past, but haven’t really organized them yet.

I was thinking of a style of tech similar to civilization-building sort of games, except with less (or no) benefits for earlier improvements. In other words it would work on a tree of development. Things like long-range bombers and atomic bombs would be at the top of the tech tree, and things like Improved Factory Labor and Breakthroughs in Physics would be at the bottom. Some of the technologies would branch into each other and each would have different prerequisites. Perhaps even each nation would have its own tree altogether?

The technology advances would each cost a set amount of IPCs based on which tier of development. Maybe the first tier would have no benefits, but they would be very cheap and necessary for further improvements. The second tier would have slight improvements (better subs, + a few IPCs each turn, produce spies, etc), and the third (and maybe fourth?) tier would be the major stuff.

I’d love to have some help on developing this tree. Ideas?

    • RE: Our Dream Axis and Allies Games…

I kinda like the spy idea, but I think it would work better on a saboteur sort of level.

You can produce them for 5 IPCs. They can move freely on the board without combat aggression. At the beginning of any turn in which a nation has an enemy spy on a region they control, they may roll one die to try and capture the spy. On a 2 you kill him, and on a 1 you turn him into a double agent, exchanging him for a spy of your own nation’s color. Any other number and they go undiscovered. The spy can perform a strategic bombing-style sabotage once a turn on enemy industrial complexes. He can also be used in the paratrooper deployment manner. They have no combat value and are treated like transports during battles. However once at the beginning of any offensive battle they participate in, they may perform one sneak attack (hitting at 2 or less). The stipulation is that they must have been located at the target region before the turn began (IE they couldn’t have moved there in the same turn).

      What do you think?

Awesome again. How many sets did you paint?

Everything I painted is in that last shot.

I meant how many games did you pull your pieces from. Those didn’t all come from one game. Did they?

Ah… For all five base nations, I’m doing double what comes in a Spring 1942 set (plus tacts and Mech Inf of course).

Also for this set, (as requested) I used fighters from both P1940 and Guadalcanal.
