Those look awesome but you have too much time on your hands…
Time is the only thing we have on our hands - I gave up a few hours of watching movies/playing games/reading/etc to do this every night. I know… I know… I’m starting to lose my dedication to the American dream and my couch thinks I’m cheating on it.

Let’s not go too off topic again, guys.

RE: Accurate Miniature Equivalents for Custom Painting your 1940 E&P
I’m not rich, I just don’t spend much money on luxuries… Also, since this painting project has become such a venture and I’m fairly zealous about WWII history, I look at this as something I’m going to have and enjoy the rest of my life… Possibly something I’ll pass down to my kids after I know they’ll appreciate it.
Another thing: I’ve never paid more than $60 for P:1940 and sold the extra parts (everything except the units) to people that didn’t feel like buying the full game. With all expenditures tallied, for three P:1940 sets I’ve paid $140. I don’t expect to pay much more than that for E:1940.
I assume you guys are young. In the future, even with a very minimal income, I think you’ll agree that $300 isn’t a bad investment if it’s something you’ve very passionate about. You just have to sacrifice some other things to get it, which makes it even more worth it.

honestly man how much? im not afraid to spend big bucks $$$$
1000?
2000?
500?
10???Just as a rough estimate - I’ve been timing how long pieces take to paint, and for the detailed versions I’m painting right now, most would be at least $5 a unit. There’s just no way I could make money without charging that much. I’ll also have less detailed versions and may also try using decals for some sets.
In other news, I’m going to be backpacking Peru for three months starting September, so I’m not sure when I could start on orders. If anyone is really interested, send me an email at chad@allworkandnoclay.com

@Dylan:
Is the navy or air force next?
RAF next.
Chad, I saw pictures of someone else’s painted pieces and he used these small decals which he ordered online from a company. They seemed very appropriate and very strong in terms of color…. would you, in your professional opinion, recommend usage of such decals for someone else painting a set? Do you know if they are generally durable enough? (The decals were national symbols and other related markers.) His thread is under the Anniversary Ed. SubForum.
I don’t use any decals myself, but they work just fine. They’re durable - just make sure to seal your paint job first. I’ve never heard anything about sealing the decals under the paint, but I doubt it would bode too well. Good luck!

@Steel:
First off, awesome job on the paint jobs and camo schemes.
Second, have you ever considered making physical modifications to the pieces? Things like making national flags on the ships and carving headgear to make bush hats or Para berets or filing down the shorts socks combo on the British infantry?
the last one bothers me because I always disliked the British infantry sculpt having a uniform that was only worn in the western desert (ok, briefly in Burma until they realized it was a very bad idea) The British infantry sculpt was the only one that doesn’t reflect a universal looking figure.
Thanks!
Yes - the uniforms drove me nuts as well. I started off on one unit grinding down the large socks and pants folds, and then I filled in the void with some ‘green stuff’ (two part sculpting epoxy). It turned out pretty well, but took nearly and hour and a half each unit. Though the inaccuracy made me grit my teeth, it was just too big of a time investment to make too many alterations.
As far as other mods I do plan on doing: making flight stands out of dowel rod nips topped with a national roundel; and then making a similar roundel flag stand to identify the naval (just a flight stand with a flag decal basically - the various navies can be a bit tough to see at large).

I just think of them as a person putting on layers - skin, then hair, then clothes, then accessories.
Logical. Cool, thanks.
I think this approach works best. You’ll find that skin often needs more than one coat to get the correct color, and by the end of the job, you need to touch up some parts anyway. I generally do a base coat on everything, then once I get to the accessories (IE gun, backpack, etc) I start putting the paint on thick. After all the basic coats are finished I go back and touch up the skin, then helmet, then clothes.
Make sure to use exact recipes when mixing paints (IE 1 to 1, 1 to 3) and to write them down, as when you go back to do touch-ups, you’ll have trouble blending in with previous colors.

Not going to bother saying my excuses hah. All things come in threes.

Hey Chad,
when you paint the infantry, which areas of the body do you paint first… after priming that is?

RE: Kamikazes for Japan, what for Germany???
Good idea for a mushroom cloud piece: Find a simple tree miniature with very little detail and paint it grey.

@Brain:
Are Vallejo paints good for painting metal miniatures?
I’ve never used them on metal minis, but I imagine so - you’d just have to prime them a bit more thoroughly. I use an airbrush for mine, with Vallejo Air Color black.

RE: Accurate Miniature Equivalents for Custom Painting your 1940 E&P
@Brain:
I was hoping for a brand of paint and a color.
Sure:
I use Vallejo paints. They’re made in Spain and a bit more expensive and exclusive than other paints, but they’re made specifically for professional model builders and miniature painters.
Vallejo Model Color Series:
ANZAC: Neutral Grey
Japan: Brown Orange
USA: Reflective GreenVallejo Game Color Series:
China: Camouflage Green
I’ve spent about $450 on paints so far. A lot of them I’ve ended up not using, but it’s the only way to get accurate matches as printouts, computer screen displays, and the scale of your project distort the end color.
