      @reloader-1:

      …FMG has them covered by producing full sets of pieces, in the same colors but different tanks/planes/etc that come OOB.

      Really?
      I haven’t seen FMG make that particular statement. That they will not produce the same vehicles that WOTC did.

      Please provide a quote indicating that decision has been made.
      It will simplify a lot of threads herein.

      @reloader-1:

      The objectives are not mutually exclusive.

      Really?
      So in your opinon, FMG can produce a fleet of KV1s and Honeys instead of T-34s and Shermans and that business decision will give equal weight to satisfying people who want to entirely replace the OOB pieces?
      Those people won’t mind having “less iconic” pieces on the map?

      Hmmm no IMTO FMG has to have some idea of where they’re going with this project beyond cranking out neat looking toys and the supplement or replace decision is key to selecting sculpts.

      @reloader-1:

      They are producing pieces that will supplement / and or replace the OOb pieces.

      So really the gist of your opinion could be simplified to:

      @reloader-1:

      They are producing pieces.

      And I guess this raises the key point that I see coming up elsewhere in the Variants forum… in FMG’s view are they producing pieces to supplement WOTC’s pieces or to replace them?

      So should we be anticipating a FMG T-34?
      Or will they “aim off” from what WOTC already produced?

      I enjoy studying about the Punic Wars, I consider those three wars as the first World Wars.

      OK I’ve never heard that said of the Punic Wars.
      Seven Years War, yes.

      #618

      The Wars between Rome and Carthage were the largest wars seen up to that time. The winner of the Punic Wars held the fate of the Mediterranean world. The Battle of Cannae is one of the most studied battles in history.

      Oh yes I totally appreciate all that, utterly fantastic stuff that makes the Cold War look boring. And most people in the world (I would hope) have heard of Hannibal and the elephants even if they wouldn’t know the term Punic.

      I had just never heard of it being called a World War and, thinking of this for the first time honestly am not sure about any conflict claiming the World title while the participants are unaware of the other half of the world… although to the people in those wars the Medierranean was the entire world.  Hmmm… always something to think of eh?

      OK BD, not sure what your point is… are we to presume from your cut n paste that you foresee no difficulties in creating such a game?

      Admiral:

      @Raeder:

      Altough this isn’t an Axis & Allies clone, it will look and feel a lot like it, with area movement, dice rolling, and plastic units."

      Well yes dice and plastic pieces I can see although IMTO that may be better at a tactical level.
      But when you picture this game, do you see multiples pieces moving across the globe in different directions and being generated like A&A?

      I guess a horsed piece could represent an army with a cavalry brigade while the infantry piece would represent minimal cavalry assets… a screening force only?  The grouping just seems to drag down into details that scream tactical to me.

      Mind you it could just be me. Dragging and screaming etc.

      And definitely I applaud any serious attempt by someone to craft his or her own game.
      Even IL, ha ha. :-D

      @Imperious:

      Its called SPA

      Self Propelled Artillery

      Actually I’ve usually heard the singular vehicle or model usually referred to as SPG ("This ASU-85 is a SPG…) and SPA used for the type collectively (“The defensive sac will be held by SPA and AT in depth”)… mind you I don’t think I can recall anyone misunderstanding the material at hand if one term was favoured over the other exclusively.

      [Mind you I’ve never heard of SPA being called a “class of [b]tank”. That term being reserved for a horse of another colour altogether in my experience. Anyway, tomato / tomato…]

      @Imperious:

      FMG is making different classes of tanks:

      And I still can’t recall FMG saying they were making three armoured pieces per nation set, including one SPG.

      @Imperious:

      SPA are very much needed and a major component of armored formations.

      Which is indeed my exact point. SPA is a formation asset and does not comprise a formation so SPA-heavy that it would be a SPA unit such as a 1 SPA Div. Even in today’s highly mechanized formations I don’t believe you achieve concentrations that merit such a piece.

      I wonder if keeping Spain bi-coastal is a deliberate attempt to keep it so accessible from both directions that it’s less attractive to invade…

      #622

      Do you mean a horizontal or vertical divide line?

      Well I meant deliberately accessible if there was no dividing line.

      When squinting at the map, I was wondering if the division was horizontal… although it could be slightly diagonal like ENE to WSW.
      Really it just looks to me that there’s a significant gap between the two white text things, one north and one south.

      The largest British ship concentration is a carrier with a tactical bomber and fighter – in other words fully loaded along with a cruiser that began the game off the Uruguay/Brazilian coast.

      Set-up?

      I too saw this sentence and what he is saying here is that the cruiser starts the game off of the South American coast.  Not a CV and a CA.

      The CA eventually met up with the CV and now resides in said sea zone.

      Agreed.

    • Can someone make an A&A style Napoleonic game?

      OK the problem that I can foresee quickly arising in this thread is that it depends on how one defines what is an A&A style game.
      :|
      Nevertheless….

      Personally I think the Napoleonic style of warfare would fail the test as in terms of force generation you don’t crank out units constantly as in WW2 and I think this is one of the defining characteristics of A&A; that simplified military-economy complex globally turning IPCs into GIs so to speak.

      Instead at the turn of the 19th century, I think the tempo is more: assemble one army for this year, dispatch it into a set-piece battle and settle this thing once and for all. Sort of pick a field of honour like duellists…

      Now then if you’re on the losing end of course, you enter into a diplomatic phase and see if you can re-shuffle the deck to “settle this thing once and for all” in your favour next year.

      But it’s just not the same as an A&A shotgun burst of massive units independently combat-moving into a string of territories bent on a swath of conquest… even if you say OK one turn is a year’s campaign season, I don’t think it’s quite the same.

      And A&A wouldn’t capture the political angle sufficiently I think. Almost need a Diplomacy cycle or something…

      Now mind you, the Napoleonic era definitely requires all-arms formations to take the field albeit in an infantry heavy manner, it would at least appear to have the combat arms we all love to shuffle around the map but they’d shuffle together to the same place.

      Anyway, this is out here for discussion… :-)

    • RE: Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion thread

      OK so from what I recall FMG was producing 12 tanks per nation set.
      Is that 6 of each sculpt?

      And I don’t recall any mention of the inclusion of SPGs by FMG.
      Where are we getting that from?

      As for terminology, there’s little distinction in the various types of SPG, they’re essenitially all variants on turret-less design and the nomenclature implies their envisioned tactical employment, direct firesupport in general v. specializing in anti-tank, which is splitting hairs on a level a little too tactical for this scale of game, IMTO.

      Furthermore, I don’t think you’d never find a concentration of SPGs sufficiently high that it’d warrant a piece / formation token… like a SPG Division.

    • RE: Spain

      OK straining at the global view map, it looks to me like there’s some Italians sitting smack dab in the centre of Spain.

      Somebody please do something about it.

      OK, OK just kidding.
      Seriously though looking at that global map view it looks like white map text on both sides of the brown figure but it looks like - from the perspective of that photo - there’s an unusually large distance between the two white texts for that to be the name Spain and an IPC value.

      Is it possible that there’s a latitudinal split running thru the centre of Spain, blocked by the brown figure and Spain is indeed two territories?
