I just caught myself griping about my life story to another member of the forum. and then quite by accident I clicked on his profile after agreeing to an on-line duel in the iron blitz. much to my suprise he was quite a bit younger than I had assumed. He is an (obviously) intelligent youth- with whom I would still like to stomp in an on line game- but I suddenly felt very much older. does anyone else on this site remember going to the arcade to play:

      1. pac man - before there was a mrs. pac man
      2. joust, dig doug, or asteriods
      3. or have any Idea who dirk the daring, space ace, or Qbert is/are??
      4. or just playing the pin ball machines because they were fun?

but if it’s captured it can only produce 3, (until it is liberated?)- see the rules clarification pamphlet that comes with the boxed set.

oh and so far as strategy goes, I’ll argue that russia is the most important figure. if they stack up a defense against you, and you are looking at a battle of attrition in karelia- I’d pull back your forces and and go all out for africa. but if they leave you an opening - hit them. but don’t jepordize your tanks. and if they attack in T1 just drive around them. that’s less of them you’ll have to kill later.

I used to love to play the axis, and oddly enough I always thought the game favoured them. I only started playing the allies after my brothers and some friends thought it was unfair for me to dominate them as germay all the time so we switched. I have always liked russia since. there is no advantage to either side. each side has strengths and weaknesses. clearly one or to setbacks is all it takes on the axis’ part for the allies to win, but avoiding such setbacks or overcoming them is what makes us smart enough to win. that’s why we search out each other on the internet. we want the challenge of other lateral thinkers playing against us. not just because we’re dorks.

    • CA's 101 and R1-R2

aside from all the craziness of that post I think CA and a couple other more serious respondents are quite right about a few things. and it goes back to a dicussion I think yanni had last year.
      firstly russia rules

secondly, CA is right about your typical AA novice playing russia. what do you do in T2? his answer is very simular to yanni’s Idea of robbing your enemy of their invasion casualties. meaning that when they do attack it will cost them in tanks and planes, not infantry, also meaning that if you can handle that counter attack you stand a great chance of surviving.
now I know many of you like to attack with russia on T1, and I’m not for that at all either. I prefer calculated mass counter attacks where the enemy is weakest or most vulnerable. this occasionally means that I give up a country here or there (like western europe when I’m Germany) but who cares if you take it, and only have one man to defend it .
when I have to attack a layered defense (lets say ukraine from karelia), I won’t use my tanks (or at least not many of them) in the frist wave. I hold them back unless I’m sure that the break through will be so total that my armor will not be in any danger from the counter strike. remember russia only starts with three tanks in position.
conversly I choose to defend, I pull back my tanks and planes into the safety of russia, leaving a large enough force in karelia to chew up all the german infantry. and I buy 6 inf and one tank. if the germans attack en mass- my counter attack force takes germany in t4-5. if not, the germans have lost the initiative and russia constricts them en mass. one country at a time. I don’t worry about japan- since I’m my own ally I send the US after them.

    • RE: IC in India?

I agree with strongbad, time is the axis’ enemy, if you eliminate the uk and us’ roll in the second front ( which is a win if all you do is keep the German fighters in the west) than by the time the tanks from S.A. can reach the middle east germany owns moscow and japan owns everything else on the continent. however, if the allies keep the axis boxed in they cannot loose. russia (with very little help from the US, and minor help from UK) can occupy Germany on T4 IF they don’t attack in T1 (which is a gamble). and the US can shut down japan one on one( but you have to sacrifice planes on a continual basis to ensure that no transports are allowed to send troops to the mainland). if the allies play in this conservative style I just can’t see them being beaten. you can dissagree if you like- I KNOW some of you will. but email me some play by play. I try to check my email every day. I’d have to see it to believe it.

loki ok I’m no genius, but, how can the game be effectively over in t2? that’s like GERmany taking Karelia and then calling it a day. Yeah I can put a whoopin on the old 'putin machine… but T2? that’s bringing the big wood. and I will agree, I’d much rather play against my friends too, but I’m propably a bit older than most of you, so it’s a bit harder to round up four people for an eight hour aXX whoopin.

    • RE: IC in India?

I personally don’t do it because this does two things:
1- geermany gets to use it’s fighters against russia instead of loosing a few more with an aircract carrier (and us plane). this basically forces the allies to grasp at africa- for all intents and purposes a one front war.
2- japan has a much higher localised army. as japan I go all out to capture the IC when it’s here. mainly because I can then stop buying as many transports and buy more tanks. however the US can easily afford the IC. if you don’t feel confident in the USA’s ability to stop japan from using it’s tranports- I do it with bomders from midway or my navy from okinowa- then I’d suggest sacrificing india temporarily to prevent the japanese from taking singklang and putting an IC here. british bombers and fighters as well as the aussies will easily be able to help you recapture india on the follwing turn by which time the Ic should be safe.
Isolating japan is the easiest way to insure easy allied victory. unfortunately it means that russia gets all the glory but we’re allies right?

yeah it would seem so but it was my first time playing the Iron blitz and I wanted to see if i would get some medal or ranking or scoring - something to justify the torment, but nooooo, just some lousy newspaper clip with some jargon that I can’t decypher.

by the way I’ve noticed all the talk of the chat rooms and on line simulators- has anyone tried playing the iron blitz on line? does it work? I haven’t tried it yet so I’m not sure, but I’m willing to be russia.

    • RE: Scenario Editor

yeah, i beat the thing senseless last night, and as germany I went all out after karelia (with all infantry and planes) hoping to keep my armor together to pound any counter attacking force. I figured I would take karelia and loose western europe- well the russian aa guns destroyed 3 of my 5 aircraft and then my whole attack force save one infantry man ( while loosing only 2 men). but then the UK didn’t even land in europe, and the russians failed to attack an unprotected mass of armor (like 8 tanks), so I pounded them all the old fashioned way - with massed armor and expendable infantry- and still won in 6 turns! what loosers.

    • RE: Scenario Editor

actually I noticed that the game itself has some well thought out strategies. at least the ones I looked at for russia. problem is they wouldn’t use them. they just sat back and let me pummel them. I mean it was great to feel superior, but I almost wished I could help the AI beat me (not that I’m a genious, it was just that bad).

that’s exactly what i did, but by the time my forces were assembled, I had to feed them peice meal against like 30 infantry divisions. it took like 5 turns to wear them down. makes you really appreciate the old ‘a’ bomb.

what nickel blitz? man my defense sucks, they can’t sack anybody much less block a pass, one turn over and I’m hard pressed to beat that game(ps2). but otherwise I agree, the blitz’s AI is retarded, but it makes up for it by blattant acts of cheating. such as not letting me use IC’s that I’ve owned for several turns- especially after a save. or ignoring my one shot naval bombardment. and I’ve never seen infantry roll as many one’s as the AI’s infantry- I know it’s cheating- I just can’t prove it.

    • RE: Are you a top player ?

I use a simular strategy for UK to defeat germany, a british carrier on T1. the german’s air force is slowly and methodically chewed up by the Uk navy (who cares how much it costs, if those fighters can’t help in the east germany is defeated in T4 or T5 every time). interestingly enough though this strategy doesn’t work in the Iron Blitz comp. game. instead of defending, my US fighter bails for canada. and also why is it that I can isolate japan to it’s home Island in T5 but can’t conquer it until T12??? the Iron blitz su-=-!

    • RE: All power to the soviets

I would like to agree with the field marshall vs. yanny. you really don’t need to tear away massive resources from the atlantic to save the russian’s backside. just by diverting some of their troops north in T2, you buy yourself at least one turn, even more if you can get some aircraft against those unprotected transports - i’m liking the idea of not engaging the us fleet.
I’m also liking the idea of attacking to destroy infantry to fore stall attacks. I’ll experiment with that… esp. with my german fighters vs. UK navy in T1, just blow the transports and leave the B.S. but I’m still convinced that no russian attack anywhere can keep germany out of moscow. I agree with the drunken liar.
there are 9 inf in three countries boardering karelia, if you take a mere 8 casualties, then only 12 men stand between my 7 tanks and moscow? 12 at 33% or 7 at 50% hmmmm. I don’t know, and that’s i think assuming the germans defend poorly. but I really do like the infantry killing idea, very progressive…

    • RE: Lame strategy 2

right and I agree, however, I was pointing out the effectiveness of these attacks as feints, to draw forces away from your allies. typically as the axis, my main goal is to make UK ineffective. if you destroy all her transports (you needn’t be concerned about the battleships), and use your airpower to maintain that situation, you have in effect gained both numerical and economcal superiority over your lone remaining advesary- russia- regardless of any T1 attacks. however that fighter screen will not last forever, and thanks to poor dice rolls, I have found myself with the usa chomping at the bit. so with japan in control of most of asia, sending a few transports to alsaska to take away some infantry from the atlantic is a very good and effective strategy, no they can’t take over the usa, but I can assure you that they won’t be ignored. - I only noted that to try and show that just because a strategy may seem ludicrous on the web site, that it may still have a place and should not necessarilly be dismissed without examining it’s validity in given situations.

    • RE: Is africa important

about the transports- atlantic sub can take the america one, all others can be reached by planes, I too feel africa is key, some people said it is a waste to pump men in here, but you’ll throw away literally hundreds of IPC’s to take 3 IPC karelia, when a fraction of that gets you an easy ten IPC’s cripples britian (basically eliminating them), and then allows you to slog it out with stalin, who by now should have his eyes on the japanese in china…. hypothetically of course…

    • RE: You are Germany, what do you do?

I think standard strategy is to take advantage of russia’s move and go around their army, and take karelia. let them have to take it back. it’s harder for them than you, especially if they are chewing up their inf in t1 without eliminating the threat to their flank. you needn’t worry about the west if you disable their tranports. you can use your subs, and a couple planes (and a bomber).
or like candy man said shink your front with your tanks (and planes) in reserve - to prepare for a counter attack. then dump evrything into africa, even if it hurts you gotta steal it quick.
