    • RE: G1:J4

Can I ask exactly what type of people you guys play that these strategies are all working?  Are these online games or random board games or a constant group?

      Turn 2:
      Germany uses transports to take Leningrad;

How exactly?  The RUS CRS sitting in 114 means you can’t amphib.  Are you taking it out on G1?  What exactly are you taking it out with - and still taking out everything else (UK Navy)?  I may not have played as many games as some of you, but taking out the UK Navy in turn 1 requires ALL of my planes (to avoid scramble) or to make sure that it all dies.  If you are attacking the RUS CRS/SUB sitting there in G1 - is RUS not scrambling that fighter sitting there?  I just don’t see it happening…

edit:  Just thought of going around up top.

    • RE: IC Question and Help on Allies T2 moves

Concerning 1 inf in bordering territories.

We have some atrocious dice rolls.  I’ve seen 1 RUS inf deny enough GER territory grabs to warrant it.

Air can go to Greenland… not sure why you would, but you can.

Isn’t that close enough to bomb UK if GER takes it?  I guess not, your only landing is Eire or the Europe coast (incl Norway if Ally own).  It is close enough to take out a fleet sitting in 110.

    • RE: UK1 & ANZAC1

      @Stalingradski:

      @ghr2:

Or airbase 1 fighter 1 inf, or minor and rest inf, or for anzac 1 fighter, etc.  It all really depends on what the axis did.

ghr2 - if Germany purchased all fleet, your first two purchases pretty much guarantee a successful Sealion. If Germany bought no navy, I can see it.

I like to do this sometimes.  Instead of buying a Navy in G1 - I’ll just do a basic buy, either troops or a plane and troops.  UKE will lower their defenses (I didn’t buy Navy, I’m obviously not going UK) and will focus on the med or Africa.  G2 - transports (5-7 depending), launch on G3 - take it 85% of the time.  Then just move on down to Gib, let Italy out - and take out US.  Hasn’t worked quite like that yet, but its come close a couple of times.

    • RE: Question regarding transports and scramble rules

My understanding of the rules is, if they amphib in that sea zone, the fighter CAN scramble.  This will prevent the landing and destroy the transports w/inf still on them.

    • RE: UK1 & ANZAC1

UKE - depends on what Germany is building.  Are they going Sealion or Baltic?

UKP - depends on what Japan is doing.

      Anzac - subs/destroyers

UKE1 - hold Gib, survive onslaught
UKP1 - take Sumatra or Celebs - stage for Burma
Anz1 - take Java or Guinea (bonus when at war)

    • RE: Allies basic strategy

On UK2, im thinking of sending the India BB+cruiser towards Egypt. I rather use the french DD and an Anzac DD near India to block (SZ41 and 38). Also blocking SZ 37 with UK DD. Note that my Med fleet is still alive, sitting in SZ 81.
      Am i crazy?

Crazy, I don’t think so.  I’ve seen people link up the Med fleet with the India fleet or the other way around.  It makes for a power punch, especially when linked with a small Anzac or US fleet.
      ’
Anzac is only 2 moves from India’s naval base.

Thanks for the answers, I had figured as much.  I might have to re-print the rules and go over them again with the gang next Saturday.

      I believe so.

I know you cannot land a plane in a territory you have just taken.

    • Rules: Subs vs transports with air support

      Sup gang,

Had our regular Saturday A&A game.  We had a rules meeting about scrambles vs subs and transports…and couldn’t come to a consensus.

Japan built an airfield in Kwangsi to protect ships sitting in SZ36.  Japan then left 3 transports and a destroyer sitting in that sea zone, with planes for scrambling.  UK sent 2 subs into the zone and attacked.  Japan scrambled 3 fighters, and we went to the battle.

      1 hit for UK sub.
1 plane hit for Japan (normal for this game - bad rolls all over the board).
UK loses a sub, Japan loses the destroyer.

Transports are then dead in the next round of combat, correct?  My understanding is a “yes”.  Planes cannot hit subs without a destroyer, transports cannot defend, subs cannot attack planes.

It was then brought up, that the planes are still actively defending the transports, and the subs have to make individual rolls on each transport to destroy it.  Meaning, Japan gets to attack with the planes if the sub misses its shot.  ???

This is where it turned into a back & forth about the whole ruling.  It was brought up that this was talked about here a long time ago and it was ruled correct, the sub would have to fire for each transport.  Can I get some thoughts?

    • RE: Subs vs transports

@The OP- your game description makes it seem like your group might be unclear on how the Lend-Lease NO for the USSR works.  You don’t have to keep an Allied unit in SZ125 to get the bonus, you just need to make sure no Axis warships are present there.

We know about that one - most Russian players just keep the sub there for some reason.  I guess for the possible defense when a destroyer/plane go to take it out to cut the bonus.

Subs can be ignored by any and all ships, including transports.  The only time where subs alone can really stop something, is if you have un-escorted transports doing an amph assault in the SAME seazone as hostile subs.  The transports cant do a landing then.

      That is what we found.

Its like transports - you can choose to destroy them, or ignore them.

    • Subs vs transports

This got brought up in our game on Saturday.

Russia had a sub sitting in SZ125 (Archangel bonus) - Germany took 3 transports from Denmark over the top and landed in Leningrad.  Our Russia player was pissed, stating that subs should be able to get a free shot on non-escorted transports…the whole point of subs in the war and so forth.  We stated that if subs could act as defenders like that, what would be the point in buying destroyers.  We also pointed out that Japan makes moves like that with UK/Anz/US subs.  Still not pleased with it we continued on (Ally win eventually, I got bogged down with Japan and UK launch failed by Germany, losing everything).

If a regular ship can choose to forgo combat with a sub, why couldn’t transports?  What says the forum?  I checked the Alpha+3 rules and couldn’t find anything that stated subs get a free shot, the Russian player stated it was like that in the old rules (PAC rules?)

For Cow:  J1 was the most fun I’ve had playing Japan (we actually did it).  The UK player said that seeing it and the defense was the most fun he’s had playing UK.  Even though I screwed the pooch around round 4, it will probably become my go-to for Japan.

    • RE: Allies basic strategy

What are your typical round 1 buys for USA and UK?

US1: Fleet in PAC, troops in ATL
UKE1: Inf & Tank (Tank in S. Africa)
      UKP1: Inf & AA

Do you start building a fleet in UK?

If I decide to build a fleet with UKE - I’ll do it in Canada or S. Africa.  For the UKP, its all about what Japan is doing.  If they are going heavy China, I might link up fleet w/fleet and let China fall (UK/Anz or US).

With the Americans, is it better to face off against the Italians/africa, or do you target Norway?

I prefer a heavy US PAC build to relieve pressure on China/Rus/UK.  I’m still figuring out optimal buys for both sides in the event UK falls quick.  Figuring out what territory to hit all depends on what Germany is leaving open and cannot counter attack.  Denmark is usually a surprise for German players who get too relaxed.  Might not be optimal but it screws their fleet if they left it sitting in the Baltic.

What are the best buys for Anzac?

      Subs/Destroyers.

Personal opinions from a guy with about 10 months global play.

    • RE: USA strategy - What do you like to do vs. strong exp. Japan play?

      @Cow:

People hate J1? I cannot play a live game of global without it! How do you sit there for an hour before anything happen? Your group would make me upset. I would need another activity to do while playing this game. Perhaps a fighting game would suffice or madden.

The old-timer players (not age, but guys who’ve been playing since '98) in our group are very against it and think its a losing strategy every time.  Most of the time is Japan setting up for a large territory take-over in J3 or J4.

I have no problems with down-time between nations, its a chance to BS with buddies who aren’t going.  When Japan gets drawn, most of the players read/play video or BS until their next turn.

    • RE: Global How do the Axis win the game?

For practical purposes the game is likely over if the Allies manage to take and hold even one Axis capital, so it would be nice if that alone sufficed, but even saying you need two is better than forcing them to have all three.

This is almost a house rule.  If one of the Axis falls (Germany/Japan), we don’t see the point in continuing…unless we know the player can take it back and hold it (and wants to).  If it gets to that point though, its usually over and we’d rather start a new game and switch teams up.

    • RE: USA strategy - What do you like to do vs. strong exp. Japan play?

Our last two games were both heavy PAC buys.  Our player last week did a 3 carrier US1 buy.  By round 8 Japan was sitting in their own waters with a couple destroyers.  Anz & UK had a double force (1 carrier each, 1 UK bs, 2 cruisers each & 2 destroyers each) sitting down in the islands and PI.  US had a rag-tag force, but still had 2 capital ships and some fodder.  This of course could have changed…China was a very hard push for Japan in this game.

Our US in the PAC usually doesn’t involve transports.  Those are all ATL.  We use the US as a hammer force and have the UK/Anzac follow up with landings.  If the islands are a good fight, Java is the priority for us and we stage from there.

      US1: 3 carriers (48) - 4 left
      US2: 2 destroyer, battleship, 1 fighter (46) - plane goes Central - 10 left
US3: 2 cruiser, 2 destroyer, subs, whatever you want (if at war).  If its still minor you can build 2 cruiser, sub or destroyer

I have never played a game with a J1 DOW…  I want to try it the next time we play, but whenever it gets brought up during strategy talk it gets a bunch of hate.  A J2 DOW is rare.  Japan players in my group usually either go on J3 or let US declare on 3.

    • RE: As Russia, is it a good idea to attack Finland?

If it looks open and the German player isn’t doing a heavy push to Leningrad - do it.  You get some extra bones and you cut into his bonus.

    • RE: Japan - how to deal with aggressive Russia?

If I’m going - I’m going.  Russia and Mongolia are not very big deals as Japan.  If Russia goes aggressive, just counter-attack and start taking their money.  You should have enough transports to deal with their infantry push - especially if they go R1 or R2.

5 Allies before a single Axis.

The new Alpha +3 rules were rough enough with watching US and UK go before Italy…

I don’t like it, sure it helps Ger/Itl player, but my god that has to be boring - especially in the later rounds when US/UK are moving 75+ units a turn.
