    • RE: Favorite Unit?

Hey man, I love tanks too. Without tanks, I think land wars would get stale and boring pretty quick. But we’ve come across another problem; Sure, fighters are pretty expensive, but at the sacrifice of some more IPCs, you get increased combat and movement values.

So, an equation that describes this might be:

      Greater cost = Greater power

That might be stretching it, but all I’m saying is that ya gotta pay a little more for the good stuff, otherwise your forces will not pack enough of a punch to defeat the enemy, yes?

    • RE: Battleships, AA guns and Opening fire step.

I don’t wanna sound like a heathen, but I haven’t played the game in a good while. That being said, I haven’t czeched out the rule book in awhile either!

Anyway, D, if you’re referring to the subs ability to submerge, then I believe you are correct; subs can dive on any round they choose. I was talking about the sub’s “sneak-attack” ability. They only get a free shot during the opening fire step, right?

      Good call though, dude 8)

    • RE: Favorite Unit?

I’m putting it more on a one-to-one basis. I just like fighters because they’re very mobile, as well as good attackers, and excellent defenders.
And I don’t see how you’re saying that four Inf. are worth 4/8/1, either. There may be four of them, but they are all still only worth 1/2/1. Now, I can’t argue that infantry are necessary, to say the least. But to have say, ten infantry backed by five tanks and two fighters makes for a very balanced force, on offense OR defense. However, I will back your point by saying that only once in a blue moon will I not spend my hard-earned IPCs on at least one infantry. They are A&A’s bread-and-butter!

My crew doesn’t often use victory cities; alternate set-up rocks!

    • RE: Favorite Unit?

I think I was aiming for something more like this: Look at every unit in a stand-alone context. Forget about the game and what each sides’ goals are, or how much money each side begins with. NOW look at each unit and decide which one is the best, in your opinion, based on atk/def, movement, cost, and whatever abilities it has, if any. So… Which unit would you choose now? I stand by my original vote of fighters. :x

    • RE: Revised Tech & NAs

Well, as far as the kamikazes, you’re right; I was talking more about the old-school version where you have to designate one of your existing fighters, and roll a successful attack with it. In THAT case, yes, the kamikaze should have a higher attack rating, because as it stands now, I think the Kamikazes NA sucks!

As for the Heavy Artillery, well, I don’t really have anything against it; it’s just that I see no need to get rid of combined bombard, because personally, I enjoy it! :D

I say just rearrange the teams. Those problems will more or less disappear! :P

    • RE: Revised Tech & NAs

Kamikazes should have a much higher attack value, like 5. There has to be some compensation for the fact that your fighter gets destroyed in the process.

And personally, I would not replace Combined Bombardment with Heavy Artillery, either.

    • RE: N.A.s influence

With regards to rolling crappy NAs, my clique has come up with a plan for that. We decide which one NA we would REALLY want, and then roll for two NAs. If either of our rolls end up as the one we chose, we would get only that one. If not, then we get whichever NAs we actually rolled. OR another way would be to choose two that we really want, and then roll for three, or even four. If you get the two you chose, then you get just those two, etc., etc.

But yes, I put that it’s a big part of my strategy, because the NA I get will affect what units I lean toward (Wolf Packs, Bonzai Attacks, etc.) Remember, also, that the NA you get can be combined with techs to further enhance your forces. (See “Tech/NA Combos” thread) In the above case of getting two NAs, you can make combinations there, too. Think of how hard it might be to take out Germany if they have Fortress Europe AND Atlantic Wall. D-Day would be SO much harder to pull off!

      Just my two cents…

You may have opened a can of worms, but I know EXACTLY how that feels… Anyway, I chose liberal, if only because there are certain aspects of government, society, and well, daily life that I think could use some major changes. :D

Of course it is all about building a balanced force, but I would have to go with Battleships. I mean, I just love having a 4 on atk/def… 8)

    • Favorite Naval Unit?

On one of my previous threads, I got WAY more replies and feedback than I had ever hoped for. So, now I figure the next question should be “When building a strong navy, what unit do you stack up on most heavily?”
I’m not including transports because their ONLY use is for ferrying around land units, and I’m trying to keep it strictly maritime.

    • RE: Help me out…

Well, IPCs represent “X million man-hours of industrial production.” So just think of approximately how many soldiers you could equip and arm with 3 million man-hours of production… or how many tanks you could build with 5 million. That might put it into perspective a little bit.

    • RE: Favorite Unit?

I agree about Naval futility (if it’s fair to call it that) simply because the game is won primarily by land forces. Maybe a navy doesn’t have as much pull as it could. But it just feels good, a symbol of power if you will, to have a strong navy. What are the marshalling cards used for? I’ve only seen one example where marshalling cards were used to represent land forces (justus you know what I’m talking about) and that was when a combined Russo-German force was occupying Persia, about to sweep through Southeast Asia. That was a great game, one I’ll always remember. But yes, in that game, when it came to navies, I (Japan) was supreme, at least for most of the game. (one of the reasons I love the Japs) :x

Well, you’re right about that… But I was saying that JAPAN is my favorite. And you’re right - I would much rather be Russia than Germany when it comes to A&AR. :o

Japan is where it’s at. I just don’t like to be limited to any one type of warfare. With Japan, you have plenty of options for what to do (provided you use your transports effectively. )

    • RE: What do you think is the most/least realistic about A&A?

…and I also have something to say in reference to some of the comments I read on this page.

      Our house rules DO allow:
      Scorched Earth
      Defender retreat
      And my favorite: Alternate Set-up!

Also, with regards to the “No mystery” comment by Linkon, I remember going to a store to czech it out, and a dude there told me that every so often they play “double blind” games, in which they set up two boards, and play in different rooms. How things are kept legit, I don’t know. Probably requires a LOT of paper for record-keeping… :D
