    • 1941 Balance?

      My friend and I have been playing 1942 set up. I’m much better than he is just because I’m more experienced with 1942 (1st ed) and Revised.

      1941 seems very popular, and I want to try it, but I’ve heard it’s skewed heavily toward the Axis. And also the Allies.

      So if we play 1941, which side should I (as the more experienced player) play if we want a balanced game? Or does it matter?

      We don’t use NO or bids.

    • RE: Questions about AAZ

      @djensen:

      @Rank:

      My initial reaction first:
      If its cheap and full of new sculpts that I can use in my other games, maybe… very small maybe.
      :? Zombies  :?
      As previously mentioned would much rather have the same type of game mechanics in an alternate future senario, pre-industrial or ancient history angle. Even a sci-fi would work galactic version.
      Ill need to see the map, rules and units. Until then I reserve judgment with serious disbelief.

      But my kid (early 20’s) immediately said:
      That’s Awesome I’ll play the #$@! out of that!!!

      So if you’re looking to expand the game to new players this may be a great starting point. Since my kids friends would also join in on this too.

      This is what I’m hoping. It gets the next generation of gamers into Axis & Allies. And it allows new designers to create variants that are true to the spirit of A&A but as shorter games. 3 hour A&A? I so in.

      I also realize we all love Axis & Allies as is but I understand why it doesn’t come to the table (at least for me), it’s a really long game. I could play 4 sessions of other heavy modern board games in the same amount of time (okay, excluding Twilight Imperium and Eclipse).

      Yep. I see this not so much as something I would be interested in but potentially as a gate to other things.

      Like an official A&A computer version with every version. TripleA is okay, but an official one would be nice with a better UI.

      And yes, SciFi/Fantasy or pre-industrial A&A would be cool. Would probably be more scenario-driven in the latter case, though.

      @Gen.Nehring:

          Does the top tip of England supposed to be inside or sea zone next to Norway? The guys in the group are whining about it totally helping the allies. Or is it a map errata? Thanks in advance!

      The allies need all the help they can get in AA50!

      I feel like it’s easier to be the Allies in AA50 1942 than Revised or 1942 First Edition.

      Germany can’t wipe out the entire British fleet on the first turn, which makes Allied survivability much higher because at the very least Britain can become a huge problem with a fleet.

      @Gen.Nehring:

      A must for the allies to stand a chance of winning. The Turkish strait has got to be closed! The Italians can do a commando landing in the Caucasus and kill off a few Soviet pieces then the Germans go and finish off the Caucasus before the Soviets go again. Totally a necessary rule! The scramble and escort rule works too as the U.S. and Brits can bomb Germany time after time with just the antiaircraft “1” rolls to fear!

      Completely agree on the Turkish strait. It’s mandatory as far as I’m concerned.

      I’m not sold either way on the escort rule, but I do think it mainly helps Germany. That can be good if the skill levels between players aren’t similar.

      Not a fan of the idea. I hate zombies. Wish it could have been Axis & Allies but set in a different time period. Axis & Allies: WWIII or something. Or use the A&A system for another time period like Axis & Allies: 1588. A fantasy A&A would also be neat. I’d conquer the world with WWII era technology and DRAGONS and WIZARDS.

      I’m also concerned about the length of the game.

      Also, here’s an article about it in Spanish: https://www.houseofgames.it/2685-2/

      None. However, we played some Soviet song and then Wagner or something last time I played a full 5 player game when the Axis marched on Moscow.

      Looking for an Anniversary game. Will play Axis or Allies. No bid.

      Note: This will be my first Play-by-Forum game, but I have played the TripleA Hard AI and am comfortable with the software for the most part. I have also played many games of A&A.

    • RE: Axis & Allies: Zombies?

      Seems like when I introduce it to 4 new people, one likes it a lot, two are lukewarm (which makes them unlikely “maybes” for future games), and one doesn’t care for it much.

      Recruitment is definitely key, but it’s surprising how people with little gaming experience can pick it up pretty quickly.

      Thanks guys. Was hoping I had missed the option. Just means I need to start playing real people now that I understand the software better and am comfortable with it.

      I like the 20 Soviet Battleship idea, but I can just picture the AI suddenly either avoiding the Med like a plague or doing a massive build up to take it on.

      How do I close off the Black Sea in TripleA (Anniversary Map)?

      When I’m the Axis, I just pretend I can’t go there, but as the Allies, there’s no way to stop it.

      (Still learning the software, so currently playing against Hard AI.)

    • RE: Captured German Capital and Industrial Production? Need help!

      @dedo:

      To capture Moscow/Russia by your power, this territory has to be liberated by an allied power beforehand! Sounds complicated…

      Isn’t this incorrect? For instance, Japan could “liberate” Morocco while Berlin is in British hands and then place a control token on it to receive the IPCs. It would then be Japanese territory until Berlin is liberated, and then Morocco would return to German hands. In fact, as I understand it, Japan could blitz across German territory, taking it for its own.

      Couldn’t the Japanese just send a tank to Moscow and take it as its own then?

    • RE: Ignore China = Happy Japan

      Also, I get where you’re coming from about the lost IPCs from both Chinese territories and the territories the Chinese take, but I believe that an Indian IC can become Japan’s biggest problem, so I suppose I see taking India as worth some sacrifice.

      But yes, I see that it’s not exactly “Happy Japan.” More like “safe from Chinese and Britain but otherwise status quo Japan.”

    • RE: Ignore China = Happy Japan

      @Argothair:

      Are you playing with National Objectives? The Chinese can move into Manchuria and Kiangsu, both of which you need for your “home territories” objective. Also, the Chinese can move into Kwangtung, which you often need for your “islands” objective. If you don’t have Kwangtung, you need to take New Guinea or the Solomon Islands, neither of which are convenient if you’re focusing on the mainland, and both of which can often be contested by the USA.

      So it’s not just that you’re giving up the 8 IPCs or so of Chinese territory that you could have conquered – you’re also giving up the 5 IPCs of Chinese territory you hold at the start of the game, plus another 10 IPCs of national objectives, for a 23-point swing.

      To pick up 23 points elsewhere on the board, you’d need to hold all of Siberia, Burma, India, Australia, Persia, Trans-Jordan, and Madagascar. That’s doable, but not necessarily easier or faster than taking out China.

      We don’t play with National Objectives, so ignoring China is less costly.

    • RE: Safe strategies for Japan

      I’m a fan of mainland ICs since everything that isn’t Eurasia is a bit tangential.

      However, a U.S. assault on Borneo or the East Indies can be seen coming a mile away. It takes multiple turns to get down there, and the U.S. at the point has probably decimated the Japanese navy.

    • Ignore China = Happy Japan

      I played a two-player game as the Axis, and I entirely ignored China. I pulled out most of my troops and never attacked the Chinese, instead focusing on Russia and the UK in India.

      China took everything, of course, and it became a real power, but since it couldn’t leave its territory, I was able to replace the lost IPCs with those from Russia and India.

      The land war against China nets a lot of IPCs, but I feel like it’s too slow given how much trouble Japan has initially with getting units to the mainland.

      In addition, taking Russian/British territory results in IPC denial and prevents the British from successfully building and holding an Indian IC.

      Meanwhile, in another game (I’ve only played Anniversary twice), the Japanese player spent all his time hitting China, and it didn’t work out well for him since he never got to Russia soon enough. Although, to be fair, in that game the Axis neglected to take out hardly any Allied navy on the first turn.

      So why ever try to take China when it can be (apparently) safely ignored?
