Italy is NOT taking Egypt w/o German help. Period. I have played too many games where Italy struggles to even leave port and engage the British navy in the Med. A good UK player knows how to reinforce Egypt from the south and India.
Has anybody had the experience of playing against a Russian player who gives up Leningrad and holds the south (Caucasus) long enough to start his retreat back to Moscow. This player never engages in a large battle and constantly maneuvers his troops to block and avoid yours.
Then, finally after Germany advances to Moscow (say G6-8) you end up with a one-on-one battle take all. Like the original game.
In my experience this is hard to win, unless a similar strategy Germany does, which they after turn 3 or so, they buy tanks and mechs continuously and abandoning all other strategy to pursue the Russians to Moscow.
Topic for discussion.
Thanks.
What is the current rule on this?
If damaged lets say to 3 markers and I repair 1 marker, can it still function? Or does all the damage need to be repaired to get the AB/NB back to functioning?
Thanks.
So how does Italy/Germany counter a first round buy industry buy in Egypt by UK?
I still attack the Italian fleet in SZ96 and the move my fleet to SZ92 with protection from the AB (bought) and fighters. Activate Greece as well. This will not only give you more money, but slows the Italians down.
Then if the Italien fleet ever moves from port in the next turn or two, I destroy it. The only way the Italien fleet survives, is if it stays home.
Under then New SBR in Alpha +3, when now do these become inoperative? It is still 3 or more to a max of 6?
@Cmdr:
It didnt really come from nowhere. We’ve been complaining to Larry for a while that Sea Lion was too easy. Instead of giving you infantry, he put some aa guns in and then nerfed them so they were far weaker against planes than before.
Sealion should always be a longshot for Germany. The game needs to favor the Allies. As it did historically. Germany will have its shot at winning, but it will come down to the Eastern Front, not Sealion. I totally agree with Larry, Sealion should not happen. Germany did not have the navy to conduct the invasion across the channel. Their best hope was destroying UK’s economic resources.
@mantlefan:
Really, in situations where the land and sea are under attack, they can just hold back their ftrs and rape your Tac bombers.
I’m not exactly sure what the benefit of bombing the airbase so heavily is. UK never needs to spend more than 4 getting it operational again, and the Germans risk a lot once UK has 4 or 5 ftrs on London.
With a new rule, repairs to capitol ships and facilities should be paid for at the beginning of your next turn (ie “Purchase & repair units”), but do not come into effect until the end of the turn (ie “Mobilize new units”). That would make it worthwhile.
@Vance:
I think its a very good idea! I would take it one step further and suggest that the repairs to capitol ships and facilities should be paid for at the beginning of your next turn (ie “Purchase & repair units”), but do not come into effect until the end of the turn (ie “Mobilize new units”). So a damaged IC, air base, naval base, or capitol ship would have reduced effectiveness while it is being repaired.
For example, a major IC with 3 damage at the beginning could only mobilize 7 units that turn and only mobilize 10 on subsequent turns if the player spends 3 IPCs to repair it (This might not be a change from the current rules, but I am unsure. They could also be interpreted to mean 10 units could be mobilized, but a penalty of 3 IPCs has to be paid. On page 24 of the Europe rulebook it says “These repairs are paid for (and the damage markers are removed) during the purchase and repair units phase of the turn”. Can someone clarify this?).
Similarly, a capitol ship with 1 damage should cost 1 IPC to repair but those repairs do not come into effect until the end of the turn and the ship has to remain parked next to a naval base while it is in drydock. It would be a lot more realistic that way. In real life, carrier groups are used to prevent damage to aircraft carriers at all cost; less important ships are the hit soakers!
I like that. I think more people would bomb them if they could take them out of action for a round. Turn 2 for example, Germany bombs UK AB, but all UK does is repair it and then it could move the extra space. Now, its out of commission for a round.
Very nice idea.
So a strategy I use with America that breaks naval warfare is to buy many battleships and carriers and then attack enemy naval ships with them. Of course, I can soak nany hits right off the bat and not even blink. No fear, except i have to get them to a port to repair.
Well i propose that once there at the port, you have to spend 1 IPC to repair the ship. Not much cost, but something. I mean Naval bases and air bases have a cost as well as Industrials to repair, so my question is why not capital ships. It adds up over the course of the game and does make you think twice about damaging that prize ship.
Has anyone thought of different priced tanks for different countries? Although this really would mean that A&A uses a 10 sided dice now with the rule that the lower the number the better.
Something like this:
Germany
Cost: 6
Attack: 5
Defense:5
Russia/US:
Cost: 5
Attack: 4
Defense : 4
UK
Cost: 5
Attack: 4
Defense:3
Japan/Italy
Cost: 4
Attack: 3
Defend: 3
I ususally take Italy by turns 6-7. Once Italy falls, it’s just a matter of time before Germany goes.
@Cow:
In order to balance the game I need to know if UK is supposed to fall or not. In every other game holding uk was easy. just buy 10 inf if you are worried. In this one you can max out the number of guys on your capitol and still be overwhelmed. Which leads me to believe UK should die.
Worse case scenario: subtract 12 total unit value from USA and +4 inf on uk.
UK is NOT supposed to fall. I have yet in my games seen Germany take UK and actually win the game. Mainly because they can’t defeat Russia when they spend an ungodly amount of money the first 3 turns attacking UK and for what, ONE VC. I know that w/o UK in the game, africal opens up for ITaly, but only one VC down there.
G1 build is a CV, SS and TT from what I have read here
OR
G1 Build: 3 Transports
Bank 9 IPC
G2 Build: 6 Transports, 1 Airbase (Normandy), 1 Bomber
G3 Sealion Attack: 10 Infantry, 8 Tanks, 2 Artillery, 4 Fighters, 4 Tactical Bombers, 2 Strategic Bombers
Run 1 Fighter and 1 Tactical Bomber with Battleship and Cruiser
Meanwhile, Russia has built up their forces and is ready to invade on turn 4.
So you have committed 100 IPCs plus an enormous amount of military units that will never see Russian soil. Plus now you have to defend uk against the US coming in a few turns.
Germany can win by holding UK at bay and concentrating on Russia.
Liberating France is so much more easier with Italy out of the game. I don’t think its impossible to liberate France without Italy out of the war, but its extremely difficult.
I just played US in Global +2 this weekend and took Italy on Turn 7. Italy tried to stop me by building 2 waves of subs at me. First wave was 7 subs, Germany hit me with 2 fighters, 2 tacs, 1 SB, in between Italy’s second wave of 5. I withstood all that and took Rome a turn later. This was w/o a UK fleet in the med, though they did ad 2 DD in the battle and some RAF. I can only imagine the destruction that would face Italy if Uk had fleet in Egypt. IMHO, Italy is the “soft underbelly” of the Axis - as historically it was. If played right, though there are alot of variables, Italy should be taken out everygame.
Their was one interesting variable. Japan was in the Med as well (1 DD, 1 SS, 1 TR), not that it did much!
Oh the joy of Patton in Italy.
There is NO way to keep US out of the med if they want to be there. Italy cannont win against UK and US in the med. Once Torch happens and Uk still holds Egypt its all over for Italy.
I have seen numerous strategies to take London on this forum, but yet to have seen very many if at all to hold London. Any takers here? I mean they can buy infantry on the first turn, expecting a sealion on G2, but with the Italians getting their fleet smashed in the Med on UK1, Germany sends fighters to protect, then i doubt Germany can sink all UK’s ships on G1. All it takes is a UK BB and DD to survive and Germany’s fleet is in jeopardy.
Can the boards from the games go in the box somewhere. So i can put all the pieces in there but the boards i have to carry separately?
You need to put felt in it to keep the dice from banging around. I would buy one if it had felt in it.
