      I wish the sequnece of battles in the Lord of the Rings movie would have followed the books. The movies make Gondor out as weak, instead of truthfully divided on two fronts.

      Actually whatever they might have done was not as cool as what they did.

      The Kriegsmarines most impressive (big brass ones) act, right up the middle so to speak much in broad daylight and even when the Scharnhorst stopped TWICE the Brits ended up with egg on their face. Cheers to the German sailors. Its like being on a team that only wins a game or two every year and this was one of them.

      Nothing they did would have helped much but I agree with try to get them into action somewhere as soon as possible.

      I have been enjoying this bloke Peter Heppner. He’s a kraut ripoff of Bryan Ferry early 1980’s style with electro and synths thrown in.

      People who own land do not own the stuff like oil underneath.  There is alot of natural gas around here and I know people who have gas wells.  But big gas companies can set up shop next door and drill at an angle to get the gas under your property.  Again, property owners own the surface, not mineral rights underneath.

      I agree with you 100% Garg on the refining/price of gasoline issue.

      Oil consumption link peeps might find interesting:

      https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2174rank.html

      The US consumes a little over 19 mega barrels per day

      On the production side:
      http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&s=MCRFPUS2&f=A

      So the US production is going up slowly but still below 6 mega barrels per day.

      The US strategic oil reserve holds about 727 mega barrels a day according to a few sites I checked:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Petroleum_Reserve_(United_States)
      http://www.fossil.energy.gov/programs/reserves/spr/spr-facts.html

      So with domestic production the US would last about 55 days with their reserves.  If you include Canadian exports then the US would last about 77 days.

      Garg  totally right on the refinery side.  In fact, Canada is getting screwed by about $30 a barrel for oil it sends to the US due to supply gluts and lack of refining capacity due to inability to get the oil to the Gulf Coast.  I wonder if Obama’s blocking of the Keystone pipeline is some Machiavellian plan to get cheap Canadian Oil?  Those Americans can be cunningly evil in their genius!

      Why Canada just pumps out cheap oil….
      http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/story/2012/04/20/oil-refining-canada.html

      Garg, I am somewhat skeptical about the additives to petroleum to make it unable to be stored.

      @frimmel:

      @Jermofoot:

      With all the talk about BCS, I wonder why there is need for one.

      Also, the game last night was great.  8-)

      There wasn’t a need for it. In Div 1 college football the champ has always been ‘mythical.’ The result of a vote. No. 1 rarely played No. 2 in the Rose Bowl or Orange Bowl although No. 1 might be playing in the Rose Bowl and No. 2 in the Orange Bowl.

      I don’t have much preference either way, but I find it a ridiculous topic to spend so much time on.  People will complain about the system no matter what.  Look at the NFL this year and complaints about a team with a better record not making it to the playoffs compared to another team with a crappy record in a really weak division.

      @ABWorsham:

      I know, they knocked my 13-3 Cowboys out of the playoffs!  :oops:
      And thats all I will speak of the Dallas Cowboys, I’m still in shock about this year.

      Coming from another long time (casual) Cowboy fan, I’m not in shock that Romo choked once again when it counted.  And yes, I put the majority of the blame on him.  Had the offense been good, the minor problems the defense had would not have been so painful.

      @frimmel:

      So for you guys Champion is ‘playing best at the end of the season’?

      I think that would make sense.  A team playing well throughout the season will get honors and benefits (home field advantage, first round bye, etc.) that should assist them/reward in the post season.  I know it’s more pronounced in the NFL, but it does exist to a degree in college.

      But really, the season has to end at some point, and you couldn’t crown a champ midway or even before the last game.

      R

      On a pure physical basis, Turkey. Better access to resources and Russia.

      On a fighting status basis, Spain. Their soldiers were definitely superior to Italian troops, and were battle hardened from the Civil War. Read up on the Spanish Blue Division in WWII - extremely tough soldiers on the Eastern Front.

      That being said, I would have taken Turkey. Spain is just too big to defend. Although it’s troops would have been a nice addition in Africa.

      @Maddog77:

      Started playing w/ my brothers when I was 13 (1976) We actually took a 4’x8’ piece of plywood and painted a blown-up version of the board on it. We spent a few weeks in Dads workshop making little wooden playing pieces and painting them. It was quite fun. We set it up on the ping-pong table and spent weeks battling. We came up w/ a few variations on the rules, map and unit movements. The one I remember quite well is stealth subs! We would start of w/ our subs in the proper starting sz’s, but we would “submerge” the subs when moving them so our opponets did not know where they were until they “surfaced”. We’d plot the moves on paper so we could prove where they moved to and from. It was quite fun to have an opponet move his fleet into a SZ that was occupied by 4 or so submerged subs. The subs would “surface”, in some cases stopping the opponents full movement, take a few hits and watch the subs submerge. Great fun and a nice twist to the game.

      That sounds like a great twist, I’ll have to try it sometime.

      I was 14ish when I first played a game. All of us were newbies.

      My dad was UK and USA and built a ton of bbs to bombard me to pieces. USSR built a ton of infantry and stacked moscow heavily and never moved out of it. I think he had over 60 infantry when the game ended, at least double whatever was left on the board, combined! I was able to conquer all of Africa with one lone Jap infantry which eventually was transported over to europe to help save berlin. Japan also invested in an airforce to bomb the massive allied fleet. Germany quickly spread out due to moscow simply falling back. But I was never able to mount a serious offensive vs moscow. eventually it was all I could do to hold onto europe because of the massive bb fleets both USA and UK sported. And still USSR held to their defenses and never switched to offensive mode. Ahh, that innocence of noobs.

      The real prize was the fleet at Toulon under Admiral Jean de Laborde. Even with Darlan’s ceding of his fleet to the Allies, Toulon had 77 available french ships.  Darlan tried to barter with his old rival to throw his lot in with his, but laborde remained silent over the topic  In occupying Vichy France after the African landings, the Germans stopped short of Toulon  demanding the surrender of the fleet.  Soon the German’s grew tired of waiting for a reply and moved in to take the fleet by force.  Quoted as “one of the greatest acts of self immolation in military history”, Laborde scuttled his fleet and sabatoged it before it could get into German hands. In all 3 battleships, seven cruisers, and thirty-two destroyers were lost amongst the fleet.  Eisenhower had mixed feelings, he was dismayed that the fleet was gone, but relieved the prize was not in German hands.

      @Adlertag:

      Russia was saved by vast distances, cold winter and terrain with forest’s, swamps and marshes. All factors that favour the defender.

      The term you are looking for is Strategic Depth.

      The Soviet Union had more Strategic depth than any other nation in history, so much space. So far to fall back and regroup.

      Israel, for example, has the opposite. No strategic depth at all, hence the six day war.
