      I looked up Chistopher Lee bio, as my wife and I saw he was in a low budget werewolf movie we started watching. I found his WW2 service, which I did not know before.

      Service in World War IILee volunteered to fight for the Finnish forces during the Winter War against the Soviet Union in 1939; however, he along with other British volunteers were kept away from actual fighting, although he was issued winter gear and was posted on guard duty a safe distance from the frontlines. He went on to serve in the Royal Air Force and intelligence services during World War II, including serving as an Intelligence officer with the Long Range Desert Group. He trained in South Africa as a pilot, but eyesight problems forced him to drop out. He eventually ended up in North Africa as Cipher Officer for No. 260 Squadron RAF and was with it through Sicily and Italy. Additionally, he has mentioned (including in his audio commentary on the Lord of the Rings DVD) serving in Special Operations Executive. Lee retired from the RAF after the end of the war with the rank of Flight Lieutenant

      @rjpeters70:

      I think it’s fascinating seeing the media brou-ha-ha claim that Dallas’ right-wing views were what killed Kennedy, and how they still have to pay penance for that to this day.  They usually fairy dust over the fact that Oswald was a raging Marxist who went to the Soviet Union to train…

      Right wing indeed.

      But he was a double, triple, quadruple secret agent man!

      Definitely part of the right wing conspiracy!

      I’d announce to the Allies that I had the bomb and that It was ready to deploy at any sign of invasion. I’d have Goebels make a film as if I had several and film it as I blew up Moscow.

      Guys,

      ––Hmmm, I, too, suspect Garg of many things,…but not of being a
      “super-intellingent spy”(Grin). Sorry Garg, but “if the shoe don’t fit, don’t force it”.
      ----And before you throw arrows at my me, I’m very proud of my family’s Prussian(German) lineage, but we came to America long before WWI and WWII. My Dad(that’s him in my avatar on the left) fought for the good ol’ U.S.A.

      @Razor:

      I think Stalin sabotaged the Republicans cause since he was afraid of disturbing UK, they sure did not want a commy state as neighbour. Imagine UK joining up with Germany against communism in Europe.

      I think that over-zealous Comintern agents and an NKVD infiltrated PCE (the communist part of Spain) are what really caused the most damage to the Spanish Republic. The wasting of men and material on useless “prestige” offensives in places like Brunete and Teruel, the lack of initiative shown the Soviet advisors and their communist promoted officers, and the persecution of Republic supporting groups like the CNT, UGT (anarchists) and the POUMS (Spain’s Marxist/trotskiest party) did the most damage.

      Also, the other single biggest enemy of the Republic and the country that did the most to help the Nationalists and hurt the Republic was the United Kingdom. Their policy of “non-intervention” and the stupid committee they set up that did absolutely nothing. Even when given proof that both Germany AND Italy were blatantly ignoring their roles in this non-intervention committee, and actively helping Franco with troops and equipment, the UK did nothing. Also Britain keep France from helping the Republic by suggesting that they would not back France against the Germans if they did. It was part of the UK’s stupid policy of appeasement that did the most damage to the Republic and thrust them into the arms of the Soviets, and all the damage that caused.

      It does seem the Japanese lost heart when their objectives and a victory were close.
      Does seem strange from a culture that puts honour and therefore failure above all other things: suicide was an option.  Perhaps succeeding too well is seen as wrong! Or did they believe after all their careful planning(Pearl and the other lightning victories) that they could not really have won so easily and that somehow things would change? Did they believe in Khama?

      Back to your question: I like the idea that they could capture Australia( A&A does that to you!)
      At heart I am a defensive player, so I will go with my heart.
      Your suggestion of cosolidating on the Solomons at Rabaul and supporting the fleet with ground based fighters makes most sense, as we know they could not replace and, therefore, rely on their superb carrier units.

      It is early yet Garg.
      The Civil War was lost in the West, starting with Nashville and Vicksburg was a greater loss than Nashville.  I agree that a Southern victory at Gettysburg would not have equated to the fall of Washington or an armistice, despite Lee’s hopes for one.

      @pfc_pander:

      I enjoy reading anything I can about Saipan in the Mariana Islands.  My grandfather was a BAR man apart of the marines 2nd division.  He died when I was about 10 and he never liked to talk much about it.  So anytime I can learn something about Saipan I jump at the chance.  If anyone has any recommendations for any books about the 2nd marines on Saipan I would greatly appreciate it.

      This movie…

      http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284200/

      …includes colour footage of the Battle of Saipan (wartime Kodachrome footage, not computer-colorized black and white footage).

      It’s widely thought that Germany’s conquest of Romania is all that kept the German Army and People from complete starvation. Germany brought by train between 300 and 400 million tons of grain occupied Romania.

      Germany also had a few long range U-Boats that went to the U.S to get precious supplies. In the early years of the war, the U-Boats were welcomed as heros.

      Didn’t the 101st and 82nd do so well on D-Day considering the bad drops they experienced?
      Sterling job getting their jobs done on that first day.
      A lot of men grew up that night and day and the experience they gained was so necessary in the months to come.

      The Germans, what can you say? Allied air power and naval bombardments  negated any coordinated counterattack above the regimental level. They held on, but opportunities to exploit the initial weaknesses were lost as time passed.

      A great day and hats off to any who were present.
      I am sure nightime on the 6th brought relief to many a tired soldier.

      Yeah, that is a good way to lose fast.

      I think having the 9 year old made that happen!  :-D

      Don’t worry, I had a coworker that teamed up with me but the other two guys told him to do the opposite of everything I said….while it wasn’t my fastest lost ever, I almost went to jail for murder.

      Well, he is still young. Gotta make some mistakes.

      It’s my understanding that Nagumo, as he went into the Pearl Harbor operation, had expected to lose about a third of his carrier forces.  When the first and second air strikes achieved their spectacular successes, with very few casualties to the Japanese planes and not a single scratch to the carriers, the effect on Nagumo – according to Gordon Prange – was to put him in the position of a man who had braced himself to smash a door open with his shoulder only to see it opened for him at the last second.  He went from being mentally prepared to lose a third of his carriers to putting a high priority on avoiding damage to his forces…hence he vetoed the third strike that Genda was urging him to launch.  Prange argues that Nagumo was never a full-blown disciple of the Japanese naval airpower doctrine the way Genda was, so his inclination was to do what was required of him (attack the ships at Pearl Harbor) but nothing more (such as hitting the fuel tank farms and naval dockyards).
