      I’m not sure the Arab support for the Nazi cause would have held if Germany would have allied itself with Turkey. The Ottoman Empire was an entity of the past, but as late as 1938, the Turks took Alexandretta, which had until then been a part of Syria, driving out most of the Arab population.

      Even if Mac’s 100000 had been forced against  the James and forced to surrender to Lee’s 65000 survivors of the Seven Days, Lincoln could still count on Pope’s 40000 further North and the Washington garrison and various smaller detachments. The initiative would have been firmly in Lee’s hands, but defence was far easier than attack.
      Possibly a European intervention would have occurred, but I try not to dwell on that possibility much. (I would rather stick to the battles and what happened.)
      Lee’s march North would have required a few weeks to materialise and this time could have been used to transport Western troops East by rail. (They might even have ended up with Grant a little earlier!)
      Lincoln would not have given up. He would have brought every man East if he could save his Capital and the Union.
      I cannot, thetefore, see how a Cannae like battle, much dreamed of by Lee, would have brought about a Federal collapse.

      @wheatbeer:

      I hope it was clear that my second comment was a joke  :lol:

      From a narrative perspective, the fact that magical elements (in the broadest, most inclusive sense) go largely unexplained provides a more satisfying read.  To explain magic makes it seem a hell of a lot less magical.

      Oh… no, it was not. But I see that now.  :roll:

      I am glad you already had a nice appreciation of it though. Some people here are serious so I had to be sure.

      Pocket Battleships were a term to describe larger warships that were listed as light enough to qualify for the requirements under Versailles treaty. Of course, they exceeded the requirements. Bismarck was created after Germany officially tore up the treaty.

      I’d never heard of this operation, but it sounds typically Churchillian.  He had great fondness – in both World Wars – for schemes that aimed blows at the outer fringes of enemy territory rather than hitting the enemy head-on (in the Ulysses S. Grant style favoured by the Americans).  In WWI, Churchill dreamed up the Gallipoli operation for this reason; it was poorly planned and badly botched, and his reputation took a hit as a result.  In WWII, Churchill pushed hard for the invasion of Italy; the fallacy of his argument that Italy was the “soft underbelly of Europe” should have been obvious to anyone able to spot mountain ranges on a topographical map.  Churchill’s Baltic operation also has a few echoes of Jacky Fisher’s WWI plan to invade Germany via the Baltic, for which Fisher conceived the misguided Courageous-class battlecruisers – severely unbalanced ships with the armament of a battleship but the armour protection of a light cruiser.

      @Fishmoto37:

      The tanker “Ohio” was brought to Valletta harbor in Malta flanked by two British destroyers that had passed wire hawsers under the hull of the tanker to keep it afloat.
      It took an hour to make the last mile into the harbor with the aid of local tugs and the destroyers. The cargo of the “Ohio” was 13,000 tons of aviation fuel that kept Malta’s planes in the war. This is an amazing story.

      That an aviation fuel carrying tanker could take the damage the Ohio did is truely awesome. But we build things tough in Texas.

      Never heard of that one.  We usually do nation only.  Sometimes we do only the minor nations (no IJN USN Commonwelth or Germany.). You can find some real gems that aren’t the popular nations.

      We would have cut off all ties with them. The next one would have been a declaration of war.
