    • RE: WW1 what if ?

      @ampdrive:

      So in Aug 1914 Germany mobilized for an attack on France through Belgium(the ill fated “Schefflin plan”),while keeping a small army in the east to defend against Russia.What if Germany had decided to attack east and defend its short western border instead?If no invasion of Belgium,would UK and later USA join war at all?Remember the spark for the war was  a  Serbia Austria-Hungary conflict.
        I think Germany could’ve handed Russia a significant defeat and taken a lot of territory before winter 1914.As for the west I think Germany could’ve held back the French.As it went, Frances opening attacks on Alsace-Lorraine were repelled by Germanys reserve army while its main force was busting through Belgium.
      I’d like to hear others thoughts on this.

      There existed war plans supported by lower ranked officers in the Prussian Army that focused on Russia first. The main argument against this plan was that it accepted that any European modern-day war was a long event.

      The Schefflin Plan, in theory, would end a war in months.

      Hey, I just wanted to know (If you are still in school) when you go back to school. You can also include when you got off. I (Being homeschooled) got off April 30th and I start back August 1st.

      I’m a father of three sons. They started school August 23rd. They go between the hours of 8 to 3.

      Well, the German fleet was destroyed by the US. A large German Army is in England. Russia tore open the German forces in Poland and took Berlin, while landing in Scotland.

      Germany surrendered.

      Hi Worshan.
      Russia attacked the True Neutrals? Hope that ends well for them.
      Does mean Germany can march into Sweden and Switzerland for the extra Inf. Might be just what it needs. What turn did Russia do this?
      Tell us how it ends, please.

      UK and USSR established the Macedonian Front. It’s weakened Italy to nothing. It did turn the flank of the Germans in Russia.

      However German took London.

    • Soviet Schlieffen Plan

      Today:
      Had an opportunity to try this attack. Germany attacked and failed at Operation Sea Lion. Russia had prepared for a defense in depth, allowing German to advance only against weak defended territories. At Stalingrad the Soviet mobile units were held in reserve. The main Soviet attack was an strong left thrust into Turkey. The Turkish army fought honorably, but were over ran.The Balkans were defended by single Italian units.

      A southern front with British and Soviet cooperation has been formed in Greece.

      Tomorrow: The War will continue.

    • RE: Another again. . . What if

      @Gargantua:

      Spain would have just been a speed bump on the road to victory, and probably a better/earlier doorway to Europe than Normandy.  Had they joined the war I would have suspected a late 42 landing in Spain by the allies.

      Fighting would have been like it was up the boot of Italy.  Brutal but consistent.  It would then be considered a liberation of spain, and the allies would have turned the spanish people against themselves, propping up a new spanish regime.  This spanish beachhead would then have allowed massive allied armies to arrive and organize, supported by naval and air assets to rolling up the coast.  Franco and his men likely would retreat to central spain.   Cut off and surrounded it would only be a matter of time before total collapse.

      Allies would have reached Berlin in 44.

      With the rich history of the Duke of Wellington’s Peninsula War the British would not doubt  brought the War to Spain. If Italy was the soft underbelly of Europe, Spain would be the shriveled lifeless arm of “Fortress Europe.”

      Why wouldn’t that have worked?  How big was the Brit garrison?  I am assuming no more than a couple thousand?

      Infantry
      In late 1939 the pre-war garrison was reinforced up to an infantry division (commanded by Major General Sir Sanford John Palairet Scobell).[13] The original infantry garrison, plus the three brigades that reinforced the island’s regular British Army were title 1, 2, 3, and 4 Brigades; but were subsequently renumbered in 1943 as follows:[14]

      231 Infantry Brigade – assigned to the Southern Sector under Brig L H Cox. HQ Southern Infantry Brigade at Luqa. Its infantry battalions were:

      2nd Battalion The King’s Own Malta Regiment
      3rd Battalion The King’s Own Malta Regiment
      232 Infantry Brigade – assigned to the Northern Sector under Brig W H Oxley. HQ Northern Infantry Brigade at Melita Hotel Attard next to San Anton Gardens. Its infantry battalions were:
      2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers
      8th Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster)
      8th Battalion, Manchester Regiment[15]
      233 Infantry Brigade – formed on 30 July 1941; assigned to the Central Sector under Brig I De La Bere. Its infantry battalions were:
      11th Battalion The Lancashire Fusiliers
      2nd Battalion The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment[16]
      10th Battalion The King’s Own Malta Regiment
      234 Infantry Brigade – assigned to the Western sector under Brig F Brittorous. Its infantry battalions were:
      4th Battalion The Royal East Kent Regiment (The Buffs)
      1st Battalion The Durham Light Infantry
      1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment

      If Germany planned for a Mediterranean Front Malta would have been the first move. Malta was turned into a fortress, however early in the war the island was lightly defended.

      Why an enemy island, so near to the Italian mainland, was allowed to survive the opening weeks of the War is the greatest blunders.

      Italy lost 689 ships to U-Boats in the First World War. The threat of an air and submarine base was a lesson forgotten by the Italians in the twenty  years between wars.

      @Gargantua:

      Where’s the option for Patton redeploying SS and Wehrmacht troops and whooping soviet but all the way to Moscow?!?!

      That would take some reorganization and wouldn’t take place until 1946. German units would need armed, reformed and equipped.

      Would the British and French allow a German Army rebuilt?

      How would the communist in Europe react to a “workers war” of liberation.?

      @CWO:

      @ABWorsham:

      My great uncle was stationed on a destroyer in the Third Fleet during the Typhoon. He spent the entire next day sewing up sailor lacerations.

      Interesting; thanks for sharing that.  If it might interest you, part of the movie The Caine Mutiny, which stars Humphrey Bogart and which is set aboard a destroyer-minesweeper, depicts the December 1944 typhoon.  The film is based on the novel of the same name, by Herman Wouk, who served on this type of ship during WWII.

      That same uncle got a pair of sun glasses and a front seat at the Bikini nuclear test.

      He went into the Navy. My grandfather went the Army route with the US 2nd Inf Div.
