Which Aircraft Carrier is thisposted in World War II History
My dad passed away I’m going through my family pictures and came across the picture from my grandfather’s WW2 service.
My grandfather served in Europe, so this aircraft carrier would have been in the Atlantic.

RE: How can World War 2 vehicles destroy a Challenger 2?posted in World War II History
@superbattleshipyamato Best bet, German personnel get out of vehicles, dig a huge hole and fill with water and hope the modern tanks falls in.
Could a WW2 German 128mm round do anything to a modern tank?

RE: which is better M4 Sherman or T-34-85?posted in World War II History
@witt If I was wanting to win a race in distance I’m picking the Sherman. The tank is mechanical sound.
If I was fighting a tank on tank engagement off-road I’m picking the T-34/85.
My father works in the heavy machine industry building roads. In the 1970s a coworker of his commanded a Sherman and had three shot out underneath him.

RE: Favorite Christmas Giftposted in General Discussion
@general-kromwell I have a Christmas like that. My mother had became single and been disabled. We had a tree and no gifts underneath. I went to bed hoping that Santa would come.
In the morning I had two ninja turtle action figures. I was so excited, I had been preparing myself for no Christmas.
Years later my mother told me the story, of how that came to be.

@superbattleshipyamato How did I overlook the four vs one detail, I was riding across Oklahoma on a trip. I thought this was a one on one contest.
I will recast my vote on the Japanese battle line. Enough 14” shells would cause enough damage to finish the lone battleship.

@superbattleshipyamato I’m taking the American battleship. This ship is newer.

RE: Scharnhorst vs Hoodposted in World War II History
@superbattleshipyamato I’m taking Scharnhorst, it’s armor helps protect against lucky penetration hits. Where as the Hood was a much older ship.

@kaleu The Admiral Graf Spee was such a great looking ship.
In theory fast enough to dodge battleships and powerful enough to out range cruisers.

1940 East vs West Conflictposted in World War II History
I’m reading a book titled Stalin’s War. The book is mainly about pre June 1941 and Stalin’s attempts to cause a prolonged conflict. It’s fantastic.
I learned that Italy nearly declared war on the USSR over the Finland invasion. Instead the government sent arms.
Question: Had France and Britain established a base at Petsamo in the North and attacked the Caucasian oil fields. And Italy declared war on the USSR. How would a continental war between France, Italy, and Britain vs Germany and the USSR?
Where would Turkey and Eastern Europe choose in this fight?

Question: How much of the Red Hill Underground Fuel Storage Facility was in use on December 7, 1941?

@superbattleshipyamato I chose my matchup by personalities I would like to see play a board game together. My matchup would be entertaining.

RE: How would they have done?posted in World War II History
@superbattleshipyamato In my WW2 general match up I want Fedor Von Bock as Germany, Yamashita as Japan, Claude Auchinleck as Great Britain, Ivan Konev as USSR and Mac Arthur as US.
Bock and Mac Arthur would make fantastic table talk.

Japanese 3rd Wave at Pearl Harborposted in World War II History
Do we overestimate the importance of a Japanese missed opportunity by not launching a third wave?
Just how much damage could Japan inflict on the Harbor and remaining ships? These were planes carrying single bombs or several light bombs.
The third wave would more than likely been made of dive bombers and level bombing attacks. Torpedo bombers would have little chance of survival.
Question: How many aircraft would the Japanese lose in this next wave? I believe between 20 and 50.
The Germans and Italians dropped 15,000 tons of bombs Malta’s Grand Harbor and airfields and never completely knocked out full operations. How could a wave of Japanese light bombers hoped to have inflict serious damage.
More than likely bombers would have focused on more attractive targets like the remaining warships instead on the surrounding port facilities.
You thoughts?
