@witt My thoughts are a tall boy bomb of 12,000 lbs sunk the Tirpitz. How would a direct hit from a 31.5” 10000 pound shell effect the Missouri?

I’ve been good, Barnee.
@barnee said in What if japan invaded the Soviet Union (alternative history scenario)?:
@abworsham4 it also would leave the USA Pacific Fleet intact as well as the British in Singapore. The Philippines woulda been a potential nightmare for them.
While I think the japanese navy would have handled itself fine in a defensive roll, especially early in the war, leaving those strong forces intact for the Allies would still be problematic for them.
I would think FDR would manufacture some reason to enter the war at that point regardless of public opinion.
Hard to say. Does Hitler then not DOW on USA ? Makes for an even harder sale for FDR then.
Either way, after adolf attacked Russia, it was game over. Just a matter of time was all. Imo anyway
How you been AB ?
Have any of you read Sean McMeekin’s book, Stalin’s War?
@superbattleshipyamato In my WW2 general match up I want Fedor Von Bock as Germany, Yamashita as Japan, Claude Auchinleck as Great Britain, Ivan Konev as USSR and Mac Arthur as US.
Bock and Mac Arthur would make fantastic table talk.
@superbattleshipyamato I’m taking Scharnhorst, it’s armor helps protect against lucky penetration hits. Where as the Hood was a much older ship.
@superbattleshipyamato How did I overlook the four vs one detail, I was riding across Oklahoma on a trip. I thought this was a one on one contest.
I will recast my vote on the Japanese battle line. Enough 14” shells would cause enough damage to finish the lone battleship.
@witt We celebrated 15 years of marriage. Good trip.
@superbattleshipyamato Best bet, German personnel get out of vehicles, dig a huge hole and fill with water and hope the modern tanks falls in.
Could a WW2 German 128mm round do anything to a modern tank?
@abworsham4 I want to thank all of you for helping answering this question I’ve had.
@witt The two guns had a huge impact on the campaign, knocking out ammo and fuel dumps. The crews of these guns also scored hits of several ships. This resulted in the Allies unloading supplies ten miles out at sea.
I found the Atlantic Wall construction was created with whatever the Germans could find locally to use. To increase the density of the minefields the Germans used millions of captured French shells. French tanks and tank turrents were used to increse local firepower.
When I was a kid and started learning about WW2 some 15 years ago, Rommel was my first favorite topic. I always enjoyed looking at all the different types of beach defenses the Germans built. I know I’m a WWII nerd, but while on my job I was driving some steel into the earth for thrust blocking for a pipeline and started thinking about Atlantic Wall obstacles.
@SuperbattleshipYamato
How well can an Iowa class battleship take a 12’’ shell? I’m thinking the battleship could take a heavy amount of beating from these 12’’ shells. If some of the pre dreadnoughts carried 14’’ guns, those hits would be more punishing.
I’m thinking eight pre deadnoughts could take out an Iowa class ship, but atleast five of these ships are sunk.
Thought?
How does the Soviet Union fair under Trotsky and not Stalin in the 1920s -1940s?

I’m reading a biography on Eisenhower.
This book suggests after the end of the Tunisia Campaign and before the invasion of Sicily that the Monarchy of Italy contacted Allied HQ about defecting from the Axis.
A plan was drawn up where the 82nd would drop into Rome and help secure the city and Italian government.
How would this have played out?
CWO Marc is correct about Spain rebulding from the Civil War. Spain entering the War with the Axis powers would have some benifits for the Axis as well as the Allies.
Axis advantages.
1. more ports to launch U-Boats and surface raiders
2. the addition of several first class cruisers to the Axis navies.
3. control of the Western Mediterranean and Gibraltar.
4. an ally with strong grudges with the U.S.S.R
Allied advantages.
1. one more weak ally for Germany to support with grain and oil.
2. another german ally weak in heavy equipment
3. Spain has over 1,000 miles of coastline to defend as well as territories in Africa.
