It was a gut punch hearing that Carl Weathers passed away today.
What role comes to mind when you think of his characters?

Japanese 3rd Wave at Pearl Harborposted in World War II History
Do we overestimate the importance of a Japanese missed opportunity by not launching a third wave?
Just how much damage could Japan inflict on the Harbor and remaining ships? These were planes carrying single bombs or several light bombs.
The third wave would more than likely been made of dive bombers and level bombing attacks. Torpedo bombers would have little chance of survival.
Question: How many aircraft would the Japanese lose in this next wave? I believe between 20 and 50.
The Germans and Italians dropped 15,000 tons of bombs Malta’s Grand Harbor and airfields and never completely knocked out full operations. How could a wave of Japanese light bombers hoped to have inflict serious damage.
More than likely bombers would have focused on more attractive targets like the remaining warships instead on the surrounding port facilities.
You thoughts?

1940 East vs West Conflictposted in World War II History
I’m reading a book titled Stalin’s War. The book is mainly about pre June 1941 and Stalin’s attempts to cause a prolonged conflict. It’s fantastic.
I learned that Italy nearly declared war on the USSR over the Finland invasion. Instead the government sent arms.
Question: Had France and Britain established a base at Petsamo in the North and attacked the Caucasian oil fields. And Italy declared war on the USSR. How would a continental war between France, Italy, and Britain vs Germany and the USSR?
Where would Turkey and Eastern Europe choose in this fight?

@kaleu The Admiral Graf Spee was such a great looking ship.
In theory fast enough to dodge battleships and powerful enough to out range cruisers.

RE: which is better M4 Sherman or T-34-85?posted in World War II History
@witt If I was wanting to win a race in distance I’m picking the Sherman. The tank is mechanical sound.
If I was fighting a tank on tank engagement off-road I’m picking the T-34/85.
My father works in the heavy machine industry building roads. In the 1970s a coworker of his commanded a Sherman and had three shot out underneath him.

My dad passed away I’m going through my family pictures and came across the picture from my grandfather’s WW2 service.
My grandfather served in Europe, so this aircraft carrier would have been in the Atlantic.

Anzio and the K5E gunsposted in World War II History
The Germans had two large K5E guns at Anzio, named Robert and Leopold. These guns had great results with the limited shells and Diglycol (powder) that was on hand.
Had the Germans had more of these large guns at Anzio would the Allies have given up on the operation and withdrawn?

@witt Cointet-element is another name for the Belgium Gate that the Belgium Army used in WW2 and the Germans used afterwards. These structures were hard to demolish or move.
Took me awhile to find this subject.

Road Trip Surpriseposted in World War II History
I was driving North Texas and found myself in the downtown of Saint Jo. There was a building with a sign “Artillery Museum.
Inside this museum was a vast amount of guns.
Here is a two pictures of a Joseph Stalin tank hit by a lucky 50mm shell that disable the tank.
I’ll post more pictures.

Oddest Tank Fight in WW2posted in World War II History
Recently I was reading about combat in the extreme North of Russia. After the opening days of Barbarossa this Front became a sideshow, consequently the heavy weapons on the front were older systems.
There were reports of German fighting in Somua S35 tanks opposed by M3 Lee tanks operated by Russians.
Is this not the oddest tank duel?
If you had to choose, which tank are you taking?

Mussolini Invades Ethiopiaposted in World War II History
Did the huge cost of funds and resources used in invading Ethiopia and supporting the Nationalist in Spain by ruin any chances that Italy could be ready for any European conflict in 1940?
Let’s face it, Italy went to war with an Army and Air fleet that was equipped for a 1928-32 conflict.
Thoughts?

RE: Second stand in franceposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
@General-Hicks said in Second stand in france:
so hypothetically if the germans have a very poor turn one and lose lots of ground units in the capture of Paris and even maybe lose a plane or two in wiping out the British navy. has anyone tried to support the remaining french units in normandy, you could stack 3-4 allied fighters and move 2-4 land units into normandy aswell. so i am just wondering if this scenario has ever happened to someone or just your overall thoughts on the idea
I’ve consider it before but have not applied the move in a game. I played a 1936 Global War game where I stacked Paris with eight to ten AA guns to discourage German planes from tipping the scale of the battle.

RE: Admiral Scheer vs Baltimore Class Heavy Cruiserposted in World War II History
A fascinating discussion!
The ships were almost a decade apart, but as the crew has pointed out, the loss of the treaty restrictions and the move past the 10,000T=cruiser concept probably opened many design doors that couldn’t be exploited by the German shipbuilders who had to stick closer to that political but not helpful weight limit at a time when so many facilities were being added to ships (radar, sonar, AAA, ASW gear, seaplanes, wartime crew sizes)
Its difficult to see how these kinds of things would work out in practice, as only a single battle (kommandorski isles) was ever fought under the proposed hypothetical circumstances of “all-guns no air support”.
In my study I have found that (in regards to WW2 surface/submarine naval action not counting carrier aviation) while the Americans often had some technical or material advantage in most qualitative regards, that their performance was generally lower than would be expected because of inexperience, poor communication or tactics, unreliable equipment, or surprise. The Germans often performed better than expected at sea, despite having a deficiency of numbers and equipment, and tactics, and the Italians much worse than would be expected given the size and expenditure on their navy.
As with tanks, the Americans did not have spectacular ships, guns, crews, torpedoes, but rather the benefit of having well-designed, average and reliable equipment in adequate quantity and available in abundance at critical times and places. The opposite is true of the Axis; while their systems were stronger in design and performance, (and their preparations for night fighting and innovations of oxygen powered torpedoes, guided missiles/torpedoes etc.) they suffered from over complexity, poor general strategy (fleet submarines, solo raiding by unsupported warships even after PoW/Repulse were easily sunk), weak logistical support and coordination, and substituting novel design and variety for numbers.
So, its a great question as posed, without a date or any help, it may have been a closer match than stated above; the American ship is clearly a more robust, general design, a bigger, newer ship (and probably with a much better radar), even with those advantages, many US/UK ships with similar advantages were utterly mauled, and not just by submarines, mines, guided bombs, human torpedoes, air attacks, but also in face-to-face battles against similar ships. This has a lot to do with the specific situations (savo island, the bismark chase) but not really luck, more Axis moxy.
Couple of lucky hits, and the “better ship” can have an ammo explosion or lose its steam. And under the scenario of no-air no-helpers, 1v1, some luck or moxy might win the day, given the disparity in the attributes of each ship.
Have a great weekend!
First class response.

British and French aid the Confederate Statesposted in General Discussion
I’m back reading about the War between the States.
Here is a good question. How many British and French troops would be needed to have a real impact in a C.S.A victory.
Theoretically had the British had a force to defend Canada and aid the Army of Northern Virginia, how many troops would that take.
Had France landed an Army in Mobile Alabama to make a play for New Orleans how many troops realistically could take part in this operation.
Leo’s opinion matters greatly in this topic.
