    • RE: Buying and using submarines

i find subs to be quite fickle. They serve a very niche purpose. Their lousy defense makes them, at best, cheap soaks. Their convoy ability gives them a higher util, and planes not being able to hit them without a destroyer is also an interesting ability to be capitalized on! I like them if the US needs to be convoying aggressively, I like them if japan is light on destroyers, i like them if italy has a tenuous hold on the Mediterranean. the abilty to sub/bomber strike with the US if they don’t have gibralter is nice. I only buy subs with the germans if i think i can keep the UK low on income for a few turns, i only buy them with the japanese if i need to soaks to maintain parity w/ the US in the pacific. Occasionally w/ ANZAC if i can get away with convoying spice money (but would rather just take the terrirtory). I can’t ever remember buying subs w/ the UK or USSR. I keep telling my opponents that if china gets a territory with sea access they immediately get sub pens, but they never believe me.

@crockett36 Thats a lot of moving parts, is there an estimated turn when this kicks off? i’ve thought about beachhead before, but i can’t seem, barring incredible good luck, being able to cobble the resources to knock out the big neutrals and keep up the regular war…

@Argothair I don’t disagree with your assessment of the thread, but it certainly seems that Allied victory, especially OOB, is hard and difficult and is dependent on the Axis. It is difficult to assess good allied opening moves bc certain allies may or may not be able to even enter the war on a given turn. Certainly the income swing for the US is difficult to speculate on as your looking at spending 52 and sitting on your thumbs or (usually) 72 and posturing somewhere, or maybe japan didn’t get the philipines, and so its 77?? So, i guess all that to ask what do you think it should look like? A seperate main category entitled Global Allied Strategy, and then you can create sub categories with different speculations such as ‘G1 USSR DOW, J3 DOW’, or G1Sealion J2 Suprise Strike’? I am curious to see how a spanish beachhead works out, i’ve seen it used twice to little effect, but i want to see what others come up with, which i think requires a certain level meandering. What is a good setup that we all get to discuss and we all get the desired end product?

@ReturntoNES Re: Spanish Beachhead: How do you deal with all the free guys that the axis get? Turkey, south africa, sweden, afghanistan?

    • RE: Where to go from here?

@snurkert the Germans really need to get the NOs or you won’t be able to fund the war… somehow you got Moscow but not leningrad or stalingrad??? You’re in the driver seat, but if you can knock out stalingrad and the caucasus region, there is 14IPCs, leningrad gets you another 7, then you just maintain parity with the japs against the yanks navy and run over egypt. you have a lot going for you, don’t blow it!

Allies Concede! Thanks to everyone who provided input!! We restarted and switched teams, so i fear my opponents are going to give me a beating… so i may start a ‘help with the allies thread’!

@taamvan I kind of hope my japanese contingent can get to egypt! They really only have one big UK stack down there, and with calcutta in my hands, i think i can actually get into egypt (or at least africa)w/ the japanese!

End of J7, Germany has income of 79, Japan 97
another round of bad dice led to Normandy being held by the US, but i’m going to be putting 13 units a round toward the Atlantic, and i have the USSR income low enough that i should be able to slowly choke them out…
Japan plans a MC on Malaya to send 2 troops a turn to western australia, and place 4-6 naval units a turn in SZ6. 3 tanks and 3 half tracks go towards africa. I’m hope the japanese can actually make an impact there with a minimum of expense.
the US has all of its navy on hawaii with the exception of the ACC and TT off of the western US.

@8thGuards Some days you weren’t meant to win! I’ve had moscow go like that, but come back to win, but i didn’t have the pacific follow up debacle :s

USA to go, but i should be able to capture caucasus, stalingrad, tambov, and smolensk with Germany, and hold most of that for at least the next 2 collect incomes, and calcutta is going down J7 or J8 depending on UK6. I’m about to hit a sweet spot that germany can allocate a minimum towards moscow and keep it contained, and japan is about to be able to full bore rush the US. Think i’m in good shape!

here is where i’m up to! USA to go on T5. Italy is being shored up by germany, and i’m gearing up for what i hope to be a G6 buy of 3 TBs and 3 Tanks, and then siege to moscow on G7. Japan 6 is looking to move up to burma full force, and calcutta on J7. Japan has garrisoned the pacific, and looks to put down a large nave in SZ6 on J6 and hopefully force a full US retreat.

@taamvan Do you think there is any merit on my next japanese turn (depending of course on what ANZAC does) to attempting to wipe out their (ANZAC) fleet and positioning in the carolines for a sydney invasion?

@Quirky-Turtle so, i plan to send in the infantry and artillary plus 2 infantry from west germany, bombardment, 1 fighter, 2 TB, 3 SB at the stack in finland, all of which can land back in west german, which means for a turn Norway will be open. at the end of G4, there will be 8 infantry on normandy, 6 infantry and 1 artillary on Paris, and 2 infantry on west germany. G4 will be the last turn i put i stack of mobile infantry and armour on germany, as i hope to also have leningrad at the end of G4. i plan on using leningrad to pump 3 tanks a turn with the rest of the stuff to hopefully plow the rest of the russians. The plan being a G5 investment in plenty of ground troops for the west and south, plus a bit more navy or airforce.
There is no naval base on wake, so, ya, i’ve got them stuck.
