I had a very simple thought the other day for a simple way to encourage the US to go into the Pacific that I feel would work for AAR, AA50 and probably classic as well. The UNITS in and around Australia New Zealand need to be swapped from UK to US. For revised this means the 3 infantry on Australia, the 1 infantry on New Zealand, and the sub and transport in sea zone 40. This is historically accurate as the ANZAC forces were under the control of Gen. Douglas MacArthur as supreme commander of the South West Pacific theater. The territories themselves would still remain UK for IPC collection. This would give the US some units in this area to work with and a possible incentive to spend some resources on the PTO instead of going full bore after Germany. As it is right now these units are simply to far removed from the UK to be much of anything except fodder.

RE: Couple questions about the rules.posted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
Some clarifications on #2.
If there are no enemy naval units in the seazone the BBs and transports unload from on the amphib the BBs can support with the bombardment shot(s). There is no retreat from an amphib except for air units. So that means in your example the 2 infantry and 2 tanks that came from Norway CANNOT retreat even though they came overland. Any air units participating in such a battle may retreat after at least one round of combat.

RE: Unit abilitiesposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
About the only use I have for subs is as fodder in a primarily aerial naval attack. Most fleets seem to have a destroyer along anyway so the opening fire special ability of subs seems to rarely ever come into play.

I think the NOs help balance the game. Italy is honestly about hopeless without the bonuses.

RE: Ford Unveils New Keyposted in General Discussion
I am way to old school to like such technology. So what happens when the gizmo goes on the blink? I am not a fan of the keyless entry systems either for just such reasons. Not that such is really a concern for me. I drive a 1970 Ford F100 and if I do buy another vehicle, which I doubt, it will probably be along the same lines.

RE: How should the Allies counter 2 ICs on J1?posted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
Abattlemap is for all intents and purposes an electronic game board. It doesn’t do anything fancy. You might want to read the stickied thread here about help with it as it has some pointers. I will get us started down in the Play by Forum section.
Download Battlemap here:
http://www.flames-of-europe.de/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=2You want the 0.79 version that is at the top. If I recall correctly all you have to do is unzip it and click on the exe. inside the folder.

tell ya what eumaies, if you have Abattlemap we can play a forum game. You can take Axis with a bid of 8 I only require that you build 2 mianland ICs Japan 1. You even know what strategy I will employ so it should be an easy win for you.

RE: How should the Allies counter 2 ICs on J1?posted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
I would say it is who you are playing and their preferences Subotai. I have seen this strat used in more than one league game here.
eumaies, exactly how much is the US going to contribute to the fight between Russia and Germany by turn 3 in a KGF? On turn 3 when the US fleet first moves out it should already be ahead of Japan because the Japanese destroyer probably did not survive Pearl. That is a moot point anyway as Japan has more places to cover than they can be at. When the US engages Japans Navy it is at the US initiative. A battleship per round is nothing for the US to pull off and they add up quick as do those bombardments. If you are blowing 5 or 6 Japanese troops off the Map by sending in one infantry Japan will be feeling the pain on the mainland without the US even capturing one of the mainland territories.

RE: How should the Allies counter 2 ICs on J1?posted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
My response would be a full commitment of the US to the Pacific theater. The US alone can handle Japan, I have done it and have had it done to me. With full naval builds on turn 3 Japan has to either start building ships or completely kiss its islands good bye. That is because after US three the US navy will outnumber the Japanese navy. Japan can buy some time with naval purchases and good maneuvers of its fleet but that is all they can accomplish. There is simply no way Japan can cover its high value islands and the homelands. All Japan can hope for in one of these games is that its initial purchases that were sent towards Moscow are enough to help Germany subdue Russia before they loose the islands and their income. If Japan spent its initial 30 IPCs on ICs I do not see that happening.
As far as building an IC in India with the UK Japan will thank you for the free IC around round 3 or 4.

RE: Italy + SBR = destruction?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
I don’t see where bombing Italy is all that big a help for the Allies. Just like in revised once the Axis (in this case) Italy can get a tank or two into Egypt to blitz around Africa the Axis has completed its goal of taking away UK IPCs. one of the things I have found that Italy can do to help out the Germans is to send one or two infantry per round to France. This provides defense and frees up German infantry for the Eastern Front. While I haven’t tested it yet a bomber purchase or two for Italy for a SBR campaign against England in concert with Germany may not be such a bad idea either.

RE: Two game changesposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
With bombers reduced to 12 IPCs I think we will find that they rule the waves. Also with what experimentation I have done based on the now know to be incorrect '41 set up the Baltic fleet goes down much more quickly and painlessly for the Allies.

RE: Education today vs. Yesteryearsposted in General Discussion
Robert Heinlein had an essay about just such in one of his books. it compared his grandfathers 9th or so grade education with what was current. this was written in the early '80s if I recal correctly.
I know that in my life time I have seen the education of people in this country grow steadily worse. My former room mate is 26 and when we would have discussions on historical subjects there was just so much that we covered in elementary school that was news to him. Josh was an A student in high school so it isn’t like he is dumb either. What is even worse is I can see the difference in education between him and current graduates.
Jenn if I am not mistaken you teach high school correct? I don’t know what troubles me more; that you are having to teach division in high school or not be allowed to teach it. I can say that having spent most of my life in highly mathematically inclined construction trades what graduates today is a joke. Geometry is not taught and forget about fractions as well. I would honestly equate a twelfth grade education with about a fifth or sixth grade one from 30 years ago.

RE: How and Why America became greatposted in General Discussion
I doubt the minimum wage laws have had that much of an affect on companies moving their production offshore. Most of the ones I am familiar with that have done so were not paying minimum wage to begin with. As a matter of fact I think we need some kind of MAXIMUM wage law in this country. Say something along the line of the bosses make x amount of times what their lowest earners make. Sheer greed and a lack of patriotism have all but destroyed this country.

RE: How and Why America became greatposted in General Discussion
Yeah but remember Jen it is the duty of the board of directors to ensure maximum profits for their shareholders. Can’t do that if they are paying over inflated American wages.
Everybody said Henry Ford was crazy when he paid his line workers so much to make Model T Fords they could afford to buy them. Looks like GM now has a surplus of Mexican made Chevies.
Back when I was in high school in the '80s in economics they were touting about how the US was going to get rid of all those bad nasty factor jobs and become this whole wondefull service economy. I never saw how that could work out, and from the state of things it apears I was right unfortunately.

RE: Will you play AA50 with NO's and/or Tech rules?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
With both. Of course my face to face partner and I have discussed some probable tweaks to the techs. I am leaning towards refusing to play without NOs so if the league forgoes those here I will not be playing league games.

RE: What if the holocoust never happenedposted in World War II History
I doubt it would have had that much difference at all. Most of the camps were more or less self sustaining and war materials were produced by slave labor at some. Remember Germany never did mobilize its economy to full war production until almost the very end so having more factory workers would have mattered little anyway. And as far as freeing up more SS troops the camp guards were a different branch of the SS (Allgemeine) than the ones the Allies faced on battlefields (Waffen).

RE: Unbeatable Allied Strategyposted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
A word on SBR campaigns from someone who has actually played them out with both powers.
First off forget all that math junk. Axis and Allies is not won by who lost more or less. In other words 15 IPCs lost for a bomber shot down may not be equal to 15 IPCs spent by your target.
Second. Hoard your bombers. If going an all SBR Allied campaign in US 3 when you could have 3 bombers hit Germany only use 2. I have found it is much more important to keep up sustained pressure than inflicting maximum damage on one round. Always maintain a reserve of bombers even if this means over building.
Third and probably the one everyone misses about SBRs. Just because you have embarked on an SBR campaign you do not have to bomb every round. Note what I said about sustained pressure above. However I have found there will be rounds where your 5 or 6 Bombers can be much more devastating in battles than bombing and knowing when to commit them to such is critical.

RE: Triple A vs Battlemap: The Duel of Twoposted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
Most games here are 1 vs 1 so there is no need to talk strategy. Although for multiplayer games there is always the option of various voice and type instant messengers. As far as the play goes players post their purchases and moves in the forum. Then they roll the dice on the server here. The rest of the moves are posted out and then the map file uploaded. I would recommend checking out the league section for a better example of what I am describing. Play can vary from PBEM type where it is a day or so between moves to real time if both players are online.
