    • RE: AA50 Rules Errata and Q+A

      @Stoney229:

      Page 15 in the rulebook says guest fighters on an allied carrier remain as cargo on the carrier if the carrier moves into combat and are then destroyed if the carrier gets destroyed.  I cannot find, however, what happens to defending fighters (of the same or friendly power as the carrier) when the defending carrier is destroyed but the fighters survive the combat.  If there are other carriers in the same SZ with available space are the fighter forced to land there?  And if there is not available space in the SZ?

      Jenn answered it correctly. Look at page 28 at the attributes for carriers.

      It is an issue I am having in a game against someone else. Their posted maps have the described attributes. I am not sure why this is. I would assume Holkann moved the “territories” that control this when making the new sektor files. And if he did so those icons should be in the correspondingly named territories on my map.

      I voted maybe as I have not give it much thought. I really would rather take a stab at Egypt.

      And a + 1 Karma for thinking out of the box.

      With maps made in the previous version (I am assuming my opponent has such). The icons are where they would be located on that map. Which puts the money where the turn indicators go and the turn icons over into the tech chart. I am not sure why this is happening as I completely replaced my old .gim folders. And while I may be seeming like a pain, I have a lot of experience modding games and such in the past and am trying to provide all the trouble shooting I can so that a finalized version without bugs can be provided as soon as possible.

      Now Jenn, you know there is that unwritten rule that the Axis can not buy bombers and must buy all tanks instead.

      Honestly I can find a good use for all the techs except super subs.

      Except if we were handing out techs I would give that to Italy with 1 sub to represent the Italian fast attack craft which were some of the best of their type in the war.

      Finding the use for the techs and who to get them by does however require one to discard the baggage of games of A&A past.

      Jenn is incorrect on Subs, they can hit CVs and BBs. That probably is from one of the other flavors of A&A she plays.

      Jenn is correct about the Chinese territories and the NO. That has been answered if not in the FAQ then I think by Krieghund some where around here.

      And even if subs can hit capitol ships they are still a junk unit. I am sorry it is hard for me to get stoked up about a unit that attacks at 2 and defends at 1.

    • RE: AA50 League and/or Tournaments

      @U-505:

      Techs are a gamblers paradise. They give people who consistently make poor strategic choices a chance to be competetive. It allows you to be outplayed the entire game and come back and win on the figurative “Hail Mary pass” so poor players can sit back and keep doing the same things that lose games for them without actually having to change their ways and learn to make better decisions. It is a strategic crutch. Nothing more. AA50 isn’t one dimensional like Revised and Classic. There are plenty of avenues to victory that you can take without having to add techs. If you want to play with techs for fun, that’s fine. Gamble at the casino, not in the League.

      I knew it wouldn’t take long for this argument to rear its head. Investing the money to get the tech is a strategic decision. Not figuring the potential changes should your opponent achieve such, is poor strategic decision making. Allowing techs keeps the LL, calced to the death, play by script types from thinking they are some kind of great General.

      I just noticed the '42 scenario still has the turn order text from '41.

      2 minor issues. When I load a map made with the map made with the prior chart at the bottom any icons there are showing up in those spaces.

      I have seen some maps with Japan with 18 IPCs in '41 this is incorrect as they start with 17. I can not double check this as I replace my start files with ones that have the unit neatly stacked as opposed to scattered pell mell. Jenn has some nice start files she could e-mail you for the final release version.

      Funny the two events I mentioned happened a year AFTER Taranto. This is when Italy had dominance in the central Med and why there starting fleet is the size that it is.

      @Count_Zeppelin:

      I think there has been enough talk about optimal attack allocation in this event in this forum. 1 sub and two fighters vs. the cruiser and destroyer and 1 sub takes on the destroyer and the transport. There is not much what you can do wrong with these.

      Except loose the German fighter that has to land in Algeria US 1. And while it may be long odds for 1 INF and 1 ART I think it would be well worth it to deprive Germany of a fighter.

      To say that Italy and China were barely in the war is laughable.

      China fought the Japanese longer than any Allied nation the Mukden incident in '31 could serve good enough for a starting date. But at the latest '37. China also held up much better than the other vaunted allied forces in Asia. Don’t rely on Larry Harris’s game boards as any true indicator of what Japan actually held in China although AA50 is the closest to reality so far.

      Italy had the 4th largest Navy in the world at the start of hostilities. As far as ineffective, Force K, the HMS Queen Elizabeth and the HMS Valiant would probably beg to differ.

      Definitely separate '41 and '42 divisions.

      The techs and NOs are what makes 50 interesting in my opinion. If we don’t include them we might as well just play Revised again. And as far as the argument about loosing to randomly decided techs the last I checked all the AA series games use dice which are by nature random.

      Rolling for sides seems fair. With over 20 games played '41 is looking pretty balanced. '42 is a big Axis advantage.

      As a weekender I rarely can play in the tournaments but my feelings above apply.

    • RE: China wall strategy:

      Without the 2 infantry from Kazakh and the 2 infantry from Novosibirsk, Japan WILL be on Russia’s back porch round 4. Count on it. The 4 Infantry prop up China for a few rounds  and are used to exploit any Japanese weakness in China. The addition of 1 offensive unit greatly improves the ability to exploit weakness in China and buy some additional relief from this area.

      It does little good to stop the Germans on the Steppes if the Japanese are sipping Vodka in Moscow.

      The uses of the Forces in the north is another subject and really worthy of its own thread. Stacking a bunch of offensiveless infantry next to Japan’s territory is notgoing to impress the Japanese much.

      That isn’t the only inconsistency. All combat is supposed to occur simultaneously. Yet now according to the FAQ Blitzing tanks convert an enemy territory to friendly so Paratroopers can fly through it.
