    • RE: USA spreading out in both pacific AND Atlantic.

Sorry Funcioneta, that is just straight BS. I have won enough Allied games without a bid and without bad results for the Axis on round one to know it is BS.

I think you have expended too much effort on trying to change China and stuff and not enough time trying to crack the problem that playing the Allies presents in AA50. There are solutions but they are not readily apparent.

I do what you do for the most part. What I do with the UK is spend the first 2 turns building up the UK navy, I find that this allows it to become large enough to be mostly independent. The US may have to provide the occasional destroyer or in extreme cases a carrier but I find that there are turns while pursuing a Pacific Navy strategy with the US where they may not be able to safely build ships, so I build some planes for Pacific carriers that will be built on the next turn and buy ships if needed for the Atlantic.

The Allies were ready and willing to retaliate with such. A US Liberty ship with Mustard Gas on bard was sunk in Italy in 1943.

With an 8 IPCs bid I have always been partial to Japanese transport in the East Indies.

Darth’s analysis is on page two of this thread which is a good discussion on arty in general with several well supported views offered. And I was wrong as far as what I said the ratio was it was higher with Infantry, which sounds about right to me. Depending on what was attacked that should leave some infantry and arty for use the next game turn.

    • RE: Artilleries & Russia

That is why the ratio is stacked heavier with infantry, you know the cannon fodder guys. I will see if I can find Darth’s post because I think it was in a thread and not posted as a thread. If I recall correctly Darth tested things several ways.

Myself I do not play AA like an accountant. One a stack hits a certain mass I like to have some Arty in it for the boost. I don’t care if it gets it bonus once, twice, or three times, I just want it to get the job done.

My main point is it is a waste to fritter away Artillery in small trade battles where they will be used once (no matter how many rounds it goes) and destroyed the next round. For Russia this normally means keeping them at home until a straffe on Germany or if things are going well when it is time to move out against Germany and take the offense, although that happens way more in '41 than '42 since a competent German player should be relaying infantry to Karelia with his Baltic fleet.

    • RE: Artilleries & Russia

I think Darth did an analysis of Artillery several years ago and reported it in the main Anniversary section. If I recall correctly the best ratio of units was something like 2:1:1 , Infantry:Arty:Tanks. As was illustrated Arty does not do a whole lot for small battles. However if allowed to build up in Russia they can project a threat to Germans in adjacent territories. There is quite a difference in 10 INF 3 ART 3 ARM and 14 INF 3 ARM, if nothing else on the psychological scale.

I see very few players husbanding their Artillery for exploit at the proper time and this applies to all countries besides Russia.

    • RE: What is the typical bid, and what are some good basic strategies?

Veqryn after you have read the essays Frimmel linked to (so of the finest strategy essays on the site in my opinion) check out my thread Australian Push. Kreig says he has never seen it before and I have never lost a game with it.

AAP is not balanced all that well, in that Japan wins most of the games by a wide margin, but it is very fun to play. If nothing else for the challenge of seeing if you can eek one out for the Allies.

      @Wilson2:

Just a note. I always thought SS was super subs. Is this wrong?

Yes and no. The naval designation for submarines is SS. IL gave the common two letter designators in an earlier post. Most of here call Super Subs Stupid Subs as it is not generally a desired tech. This is especially true in AA50 (Anniversary Edition) where tech research is not directed but rolled from a chart once a “breakthrough” is made.

    • RE: U.S. Marine Raiders vs. German S.S.

Which Rider Battalion would it be? Both were developed, organized, and equipped differently.

Which brings me to the SS. Which SS division and at what time point? Some of the SS units were no better and possibly even worse than Heer units.

I know the SS have gained an aura of invincible supermen but that was just not the case. If it was equal numbers head on with strictly infantry forces I would have to give the nod to the Raiders as they would have been able to put more lead down range.

Add some ships to the Baltic Fleet. Take and hold Karelia. Really that is all you need to know about the 1942 scenario.

    • RE: Best german strategy?

Some good points Battlingmaxo, and I suspect from a non-tech standpoint that is the best option for Germany, stockpiling the extra cash to use as needed. I am normally a tech player so I spend the excess on research.

As far as Carriers for the Allied fleet I think that is a good response up to a point but I think after a certain mass of carriers is reached the US is better served with Destroyers for fodder and the UK is better off with Cruisers to facilitate strafes using bombardments. That is from my German view of things at least. I do not play KGF with the Allies so I could be wrong.

    • RE: Bids

      @axis_roll:

oh, can you post a link to the game?

I’d like to watch the story with the Moral that a Zero Bid is a win for the allies.
I want to watch the axis ‘world fall appart (sic)’

Aren’t we playing one of these now  :-D

Personally I think a bid is not really necessary for '41, I know a lot of players have a different take but that is mine. '42 definitely needs a bid but I have not messed around with them enough yet to for an opinion of how much.

As far as the original poster and wondering why you got the smack down. Play a few games here and you will figure that out. There are literally people from all over the world playing here and some darn sharp ones that have been playing AA games for a very long time.

    • RE: Best german strategy?

axis_roll in that scenario I would start to switch to Fighters and Tanks as the need for defense increased. The fighters can still assist the bombers for a strike on a navy if it should become available. I am not a fan of KGF in AA50-41. at least not one of the all out from the start ignore Japan ones. I am quite confidante that I can hold out long enough to develop the dreaded Godzilla Japan. There is also no reason you can not do 1 and 2. I normally do starting from turn 1. In that game with Darth I did not as he did not have a significant presence in the Atlantic so there was no need of such. And Zhukov is on the right path. The Allies have to buy additional ships due to the increased strength of the Luftwaffe. This buys time. Time to play patty-cake with Russia while Japan gets geared up and time to beef up the Atlantic Wall. So far it has by far worked best for me. Much better than an IC in France anyway.  :-D

    • RE: Best german strategy?

My preferred German strategy is to but 1 bomber per round. These can be used to harass Allied shipping although generally they merely force the Allies to have to add many more ships to their Atlantic fleets. They can also be used to strat bomb England but I prefer not to use German bombers for such unless the UK is very short on funds. Their main purpose is to tip the balance against Russia when the big battle finally comes although I have generally used them for trades with Russia until that time.

I much prefer '41 unlike all the above opinions '42 is a joke to me since it is so imbalanced in the favor of the Axis.

    • RE: What is the correct bid amount in the 2010 League '42 setup?

I would probably go for 3 INF for the USSR and put 1 each in Karelia, Russia, and the Caucasus. These can be used to beef up the Russian attacks against Germany as these seem to be pretty critical for the Allies to have some chance of success.

Unlike AA5041 in AA5042 Germany is the monster. All that boohooing about China is really irrelevant. All Germany had to do is build up the Baltic Fleet and throw its 50 IPCs a turn weight around. So while you may want to take a more global approach a properly played Germany will HAVE to be dealt with, not so much from a KGF standpoint but because it is the monster on the board and can not be ignored. If it is Either London or Moscow will be in German hands very soon.
