Thanks Mot. That’s two downloads I’ll have to do. I’m guessing neither is the size of TripleA but to give you an idea of what my connection is like TripleA took nearly 4 hours to download. I’ll get to those when I have the time. Soon enough I’ll can this sh!t connection.

None of the commies touch Simo Hayha. Stalin did have the best female snipers. One named Ludmila P-lottaletters knocked down over 300 Nazis. If she was my gal I’d let her win every arguement.

How does an online game work? The reason I ask is my crappy dial up dies a lot and some things just won’t work. I used to be able to listen to indoor football games but now I can’t. Certain forums cause my AOL to turn off. I used to go to an indoor football chat room on game nights and now that goes spas on me. Everyone in my area is having the same problems. I wish high speed would get here. Price of living in the sticks.

Yup. The unit I refered to was 2/6 INF, !st AD. I was in E co. with the rest of the tank busters. Hence my user name. I see your 2nd AD avatar. Is that a former or current unit of your’s?

I seems to me you have some good ideas there IL. How does the weaker tanks at higher cost for Japan affect the game? That might be a hard sell for some people.

I guess the brewing up problem with the Shermans had been fixed on the A1 models Half-Track. I’m guessing from your name you like half tracks. If so I have a story about something you would have loved to have seen. My battalion in Germany had an M-3 for a parade vehicle. Our BC had mounts added to all four corners of the box for M-60’s and MILES gear added to the thing. On a training exercise he manned the fifty with guys on the M-60’s and rode through a valley shooting anything the bad guys moved. They went from one side to the other without taking a hit. It was so funny everything stopped for a minute and everyone watched. You don’t see an M-3 blazing away and driving past an M-1A1 everyday. Not on the subject I just felt like sharing it.

I understand the game will never be completely accurate for playability purposes RedBaron. So I don’t think we should want it to be totally accurate stat wise. Still closer would be nice. But you mentioned the years of some units and drawlings too. It’s not that much to ask that they get those right for sure. It would be nice to have the game develop to the point where people don’t feel the need for many house rules. I don’t like playing a game at two different places using two sets of rules. It’s one of my peeves.

    • AAM armor vs real world armor.

I’ve been meaning to bone up on this and mention it for a while. I’ll just throw up some numbers and I’m sure everyone will pick up what I’m puuting down.

M4A1 Sherman front armor 100mm, rear armor 15mm. AAM defense 5/4

KV-1 front armor 100mm, rear armor 75mm. AAM defense 6/6 with hulking mass SA. My favorite Russian tank BTW.

IS-2 front armor 150mm, rear armor 60mm. AAM defense 7/7 with superior armor 2 SA.

The IS-3 's front plate was 200mm I’m not sure on the rear. 100mm comes to mind but I’m probably wrong. Regardless it wasn’t 200mm. AAM defense 7/7 with superior armor 3 SA.

Jagdpanzer IV/48 front armor 80mm, rear armor 20mm. AAM defense 5/3 with superior frontal armor 2 SA. A Sherman is nearly twice the height of a Jagdpanzer IV so I get the frontal defense thing when comparing the two. You also have to consider armor slope, round traps, mantlet thickness and shape, turret vs no turret etc.

The Carro Armato has the highly flammable SA. Early Shermans brewed up all the time. That’s why the Germans called them Tommie cookers. After water jackets for the main gun round stowage were introduced this problem nearly went away. I don’t think the water jackets were on the M4A1. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

A well placed shot to the rear of a Sherman using a Mauser with AP bullets could stop a Sherman. Rear defense 4 my a$$.

I did reference some of the armor thicknesses from David Miller’s awesome book “The Great Book of Tanks”. If you don’t own a copy and like armor you need to get to the book store.

Guaranteed my I.Q. isn’t in the brilliant range. To be honest I’ve only played revised against the computer a couple times. It’s a horrible gauge. I used to play A&A all the time years ago in the Army. Now I play AAM with my oldest son. His and my growing interest in that is why I looked for a forum about it.

I don’t care much for the D6 system. I’ve been working on a game for a while now and have bounced back and forth between D10 and D12 systems. Historically speaking you generally need a 3 to 1 fire power ratio if you are the attacker. Of course several factors can alter that but 3 to 1 has been a general rule for a while now. Using higher sided dice and giving the ability to entrench can get you closer to reality in a game in my opinion.

2/2 Jap tanks is closer to reality but I don’t like tampering with the rules much. When I played all the time our only house rule was always Russia restricted unless you’re playing a newbie. Then we would give him the Allies with no restriction. I don’t like equal numbers for attacking and defense. A hull down tank behind foliage is a tougher nut to crack than one moving in the open. Then again an armored thrust that is behind your lines will usually kick your ass more than some hidden tanks will.

I do think giving the Brits heavy bombers and the Germans rockets would be historically accurate and not alter the game too much. You could possibly give the heavies to the Americans also but I don’t know if that would swing the advantage too much to the Allies.

I’m just not knowledgable enough about the game to take a shot at your last question. What ever the version I would rated the weakest nation as the best for me. I love doing a tactical retreat against superior numbers. I use a series of kill boxes to make the bad guys pay for every inch. It works great against a computer. Usually humans learn after once or twice and build a massive force before entering the kill box. That’s fine. It slows them down. Then I hide amongst the closest allied force and wait for an opening.

If they were going to find a T-34 used in a battle in '44 I think it’s interesting they found a T-34/76A. It was most likely made prior to Operation Barbarossa. The Germans had blown up a lot of Russian armor by the time this thing was sunk. I think the A also known as the 1940 model was produced in fewer numbers than most T-34 models. I’m not basing that on certain knowledge but I do know the A carried an “interim” L-11 gun. Usually “interim” designs are not produced in as large of numbers as vehicles that are not interim. Also the Soviets along with everyone else built tanks in larger numbers as the war drug on. This being an early model points to lower production numbers. That said the Soviets did build around 35,000 T34/76’s of all models so I’m sure a lot of A’s were built.

How about those silly Estonians. They were laying the main gun rounds ON THE GROUND! I would have said “Firewood anyone.” and started knocking some trees down. I’ve cut a tree down with LAW rockets in the past. It was fun. I bet a 76mm cannon would be even more fun. Silly Estonians.

    • RE: Interesting Tank Battle in '39: Japan vs. Soviet Union

Anyone interested in military history and especially WWII should learn about the USSR’s military campaigns in '39. This is a great find. Another thing folks here would like is The Winter War between the Soviets and Finland. The Finns handed Stalin his ass for three months until the weight of numbers became too much. The Battle of Suomusalmi was a text book example of how too dwindle down superior numbers. Also the greatest sniper ever known was a Finn. Simo Hayha took out around 500 commies in less than 100 days using open sites. That way he could keep his head lower than with a scope. Anyone interested will have to Google these things. I don’t have a site to mention.

Two famous quotes come to mind when reading about the Japanese thinking the Americans were a better option than the Soviets for fighting against. First, the mayor of Hiroshima saying “What the f**k was that!” Second, three days later the mayor of Nagasaki looking up at Bach’s Car saying “I hope that’s a recon mission.”

I think we have a Sturmgeschutz III Ausfurung G here. Furthermore it was built prior to August 43. Only the F and G models had the 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 gun this vehicles carries. After August of 43 when Pzkpfw III ended StuGs were built with the Saukopf mantlet which this vehicle obviously does not have. I can’t recall anything about F models having applique armor which this vehicle has and finally there were only 120 F Models built so I think it’s a G. If you look at the title of the article it includes the word Sturmgeschutz. Top notch hint that it’s a StuG.

Some of the rares are hard to touch for $5. All the Semoventes I bid on went for over that. Well over it in most cases. I guess once they’ve been out a while the price drops. Hence my 99 cent and $1.65 Chi-Has.

    • Is there a good price guide?

I just spent a week eBaying and think I did pretty good. I’m pretty new to this so I may be wrong. I used Popular Collections prices as a guide. They were the first site I found with prices for all of the AAM pieces. I figured if I was not paying much more than half of their price for something I was probably doing okay. I got 17 R’s, 2 U’s and 4 C’s for $72.30 total. Adding up the cost of the same items at PC’s site the price would be $152.50 plus shipping. Is there a better guide for me to use?

    • RE: Cool concept

For the most part tankers were given M3 “greese guns”. You can’t hit crap with those things. If a Thompson is 10-6-0 against men I would say an M3 would be 7-3-0 or so. That again an intrepid tanker might be able to get his hands on a Thompson.
