Combat move. Pre DoW question

Thank you. Had not seen that and was unhappy to contradict Kriegkund, but could not see any difference with what I had said. Now I realise without a japanese DOW against UK/Anzac a Japanese player could have moved through an occupied sea hex on its way to a Dutch territory. Now it cannot. Though, of course, my way and knowing I was provoking war with UK/Anzac, I would have attacked them too and, therefore, not moved illegally through a sea zone . You have to love Japan.

Our group was wondering the same thing and came to the same conclusion.  In the new 1942 game I had a massive multinational allied fleet in SZ 12 including 3 russian subs of all things.  Facing it was a fleet in SZ 14 consisting of a Jap and german battleship/loaded carrier combo along with 6 u-boats.  It was in interesting situation, neither could attack the combined enemy with a divided attack force.  From SZ 14 the axis could hit Moscow  landing on an occupied eastern province with air power or SZ 17,18, 11, 9, 8 with the assumption the fighter(s) would land on a victorious carrier that single handedly destroyed a fleet of 4 CV, 8 FTR, 4 DD, 6 SS, 1 BB and  2 CC.  It meant using a fair bit of capital ship resources to escort straggling/special mission transport fleets or hoping in vain he would trade a ftr and cv for 1 or 2 transports.

I could have used the Yanks earlier to clear the enemy in SZ 14 but early I required a long shuck train starting on the US seaboard, Canada, algeria and across the top of Africa into persia to guarantee control of africa and to overwhelm the 2 german transport shuck operation into Africa.  I had enough fleet to defend, the Japs were trapped and would have put my america to africa shuck out of position.

Krieghund, I’m confused. Do I have this right? If a transport accompanied by a cruiser, moves into a seazone w/an enemy sub, the cruiser stays in the seazone w/the enemy sub & asks if the enemy sub wants to fight or submerge but the transport moves out of the seazone(b/cuz it picked up an inf in the seazone & is on it’s way to invade an island in another seazone). The sub would get a “pot shot” at the transport?

Yes, because the transport is not escorted for its entire move.

Then the sub doesn’t get to fire.

Can the sub submerge(i.e. not fighting the cruiser) and still get the “pot shot” at the transport?

Yes.  The sub’s firing happens in the Combat Move phase, then the submerging happens in the Conduct Combat phase.

Also, have another question, this applies to A&A Pacific 1940. Let’s say the US has 1 BB, 1 AC, 1 CC, 1 DD & 2 Subs in SZ6 surrounding Japan. Japan attacks w/a whole bunch of air, 1 AC(brought along to absorb hits) & is also invading w/2 Transports loaded w/troops. The Jap players asks the US player if he wants his subs to fight or submerge. The US player says obviously fight b/cuz his subs can only hit the AC. At some point in the battle, all the US surface ships are gone, due to the Jap air, the Jap AC is gone but the US subs remain b/cuz no one could hit them. What happens next?

Can the Jap Trans ignore the subs?

No.  Subs can only be ingored during movement.  Once you attack them, you give up that option.

Not unless they can’t retreat.  If they are able to retreat, they may do so.

No.  Sub shots only occur during movement phases.  Retreats happen during the Conduct Combat phase.  The subs already had their chance during combat.

Thanks guys…my friend and I believe this rule is huge for Japan since it allows Japan to build fully loaded carriers quite easily at crucial times in the game, so many extra planes that can land on new carriers.

Makes it tough on the Allies whenever they get in close.

I would like to thank you guys for the advice, because I won my game against my best buddy.

I immediately pushed my Navy South and took NSW from the Austrailians (he had alot of troops in Queensland).  I also built a factory in Kwangtung which the next turn I made 9 men there (and a transport) followed by 10 tanks the next turn.  I traded NSW for a few turns back and forth eventually killing off all the Australian troops two turns before America could send their then massive navy to Austrailia.

I used two transports and took Sumatra and Malaya with Battleship and Destroyer support, and smashed the remaining Brits and 3 Chinese in Yunnan at the cost of about 8 planes to the 4 British planes and several infantry.

With Australia clear of troops I moved transports and bombers into a poor India and took it over and blocked the United States from reaching Austrailia, Japan, or the Phillipenes.

Thank you all for the advice, but next time Ill attack sooner with Japan, the Brits got rich fast which caused me a big headache.

Just a quick question : So the AC now has 0 attack. What is his defense? Still 2?

Did they modify the defense on the battleboard?
