The Allies didn’t have “a” plan to wage the Battle of the Atlantic, and neither did the Germans. The Battle of the Atlantic was a complex battle of attrition on a gigantic scale which lasted all the way from September 1939 to May 1945, and it was characterized by constant changes of plans and tactics and weaponry on both sides as it progressed, with each side trying to overcome every new enemy development with a suitable counter-development. The campaign see-sawed several times, with one side or the other gaining the advantage at various points; some methods of waging the campaign became ineffectual as time progressed, but were highly effective in earlier stages and therefore were entirely correct to use at those points.
70TH ANNIVERSARY DISCUSSION (2) THE PHONEY WAR 1939-1940
-
Was there really anything “Phoney” about the Phoney War? Should have France tried to attack Germany’s defences in the east? Do you believe that if France had went full force against Germany…would Hitler have still tried an all out war against them? What do you guys think France should have done and don’t forget Britain…What could the British have done if anything at this time of the “Sitzkrieg”?
Looking forward to all your thoughts…

France best chance for victory was an all out offensive. France, with British aid, may have had enough man power to push to the Rhine. The Allies had more tanks than Germany; had they made one large scale offensive they could have forced the Germans fight on the Allied terms. Most of the German armor, consisting of Panzer I, II and Czech models would have been less effective defensively. The few Panzer III & IV would have had been over burdened. Worse case would have seen the birth of a new static Western Front, a delightful dream for Stalin.
Keep the 70th anniverary discussion postings. Good stuff.
