you could try some of the altrenate set ups. Also triplea has a game called napoleonic empires that is a FFA. It seems pretty popular

Buy a 4 x 8 shadded relief world map. (You can get one for $80 US maybe less)
After that, change the country border and names + divided the sea zone.
To protect the map, used a thin platic sheet to cover the gameboard. - It wont be long.
