• D:S - you see the problem with this exchange is like talking about health care - you don’t have our style, so you can’t easily imagine thinking that you need it. That’s the same with other ideologies across the two countries. Canada does not have the same militaristic requirements as the US (read: bloodlust) and therefore it is less necessary for us to have the relatively equivalent army. Yanny hit the nail on the head. No one cares enough to want to attack us (well, not until we helped the US fry some of Al Queda), and our peacekeepers are doing at least an adequate job, and our shores are typically well patrolled. The presence of the US brings us closer to the need for a stronger military than any other nation or idea.

  • @cystic:

no one really wants to invade this place ('cept maybe the US . . . ).

Annex CC, Annex. Theres a difference.

  • Annex away YB

  • @Yanny:

Why would Canada need a military? Name one country that threatens Canada. And Canada has fairly active special forces. Remember, some of the guys which US bombers killed in Afganistan.

There is more to it than that.

    Why does Canada need policemen?

  • Canada needs policemen to punish criminals. They are the biggest threat Canada faces.

Same with Japan. Rearming never does any good in a peaceful world. Wars are started that way.

  • You could look at the military as a police force.
Protected and defending those who can’t.

Either way, I’m not talking about increasing the military so much as I’m talking about upgrading and maintaining.

  • above was me again

  • The Canadian Military is not really obsolete. They, like most smaller countries, aren’t planning to have to run a regional war. Instead, they have a fairly small very well trained special forces core.

  • Helicopters from 1960 not obsolete???
They can’t even afford proper uniforms.
    They need an upgrade.
The only thing Canada has, that is anywhere near modern, are F-18s.

You don’t have to plan on wars to keep a military modern.
Peace keeping is important, is it not.
Why not have Canada peace keep in other nations with swords and shields
    I can’t imagine that being expensive……

I don’t know where you getting this special forces thing from…
The units in Afghanistan were regular infantry.
I belive the division came from Edmonton.
In which case it’s the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry 1.
    No special forces there…

  • your wrong! Canada has specail forces, its the goverments best kept secret!

  • the Canadian light infantry AFAIK is as well trained as the American Rangers forces - thanks largely to co-operation with the British military.
And GeZe - i believe you’re referring to the Joint Task Force-2’s - the equivalent to the US Navy Seals - also molded after the British version. They are a well kept secret tho’. No movies, tv shows, very little news about them and the news that does come out simply refers to the unit with absolutely no specifics. It sounds like they’re quite handy tho’. . . .

  • well 10 years of nobady knowing is pretty good

  • The Navy Seals went down the tubes pretty quickly as soon as the public started making movies about them. I suspect the same will happen soon with Delta Force. Hell, theres probably some other force out there more elite than Delta that we’ve yet to learn about.

  • Yeah… Terminators. :o

  • @21:

    Yeah… Terminators. :o

    LOL, in the future…

  • @Yanny:

How did they go down the tubes?

They’re still just as deadly and effective as they’ve always been. Probably even more so.

PS: Does anyone know (quantity wise) if Russia has more nukes than the United States? I’m just curious.

  • the US has more nukes, russia is a bigger country

  • How did they go down the tubes?

    Yah, I didn’t get that either. :)

  • The Navy Seals used to be the elite, the guys you call on when you want someone dead. They were the best trained and geared troops in the world. Offically, they did not exist. However, after widespread publicity, they were proven to exist. There old job was to do the dirty work, now that job is in the hands of Delta Force.

The Navy Seals really have no job in the modern army anymore. The Deltas kill people. The Rangers paint targets for smartbombs, and can hold their ground in a fight. The Seals however, they aren’t trained to fight a war. They are trained to go in, complete their objective, and get out. Delta does that now.

  • Uh no… the use of Navy SEALs is today just as great. Guerilla warfare, counter insurgencies, and covert operations are largely handled by SEALs… This is very important in modern “wars.” I’m sure SEAL team members would not like to hear their training and importance downgraded… :-?
