Italy wasnt going to be a stand alone nation in the early concept stages - hence the cover not having any Italian represtation.

I’ve seen a game where the allies lost after they took italy, but this is rather unsuprising due to italy’s small military power and income. I expect this is a rather unrare event.

Personally I hope they keep the same rules… randomizing casualties will take a lot of tactics away from the game.
