Where do you live?

About to start a game of anniversary edition and my roommate got the commander tiles. My question is if the us commander affects the Chinese units if any of their abilities are applicable? Specifically pattons blood and guts side (I doubt I’ll have the units to but just to be safe), or MacArthur determined side. The rest wouldn’t affect them regardless from what I saw.

@djensen If the goal with the bidding rules is to speed up game time start, then I would suggest something like:

“If exactly one team has made a bid by the official game start time, that bid is automatically accepted. If neither team has made a bid by the official game start time, then the referee will take the average bid made across all tables so far at the tournament, apply it to that table, and flip a coin to determine which team will play which side.”

For purchasing after your clock has run out, I wouldn’t give any significant extra time. You already used all your time; that’s the whole point. I would say that if your clock hits 0:00.00 during your purchase phase, then you lock in any units that are currently sitting in the unit purchase box, any remaining income gets converted into infantry in the unit purchase box, you have 30 seconds to put any units in the unit purchase box in any secondary factories you might want to defend (e.g. India), and then any units left in your purchase box at the end of the 30 seconds go to your capital (e.g. London) or (if your capital is full) are wasted.

@vodot I’m glad you enjoyed the write-up. Hopefully it provided a counterbalance to whatever BGN had to say. Others have asked me about it but I’m too self-conscious to willingly sit through a hour+ video of someone else using the luxury of hindsight to review my game. If anything I’d probably just get unnecessarily angry over it and leave a 2-mile long argumentative comment, and that wouldn’t do anyone any good.

Personally I don’t enjoy the 2v2 format that gen con and all of BGN’s tournaments employ. All the past cons I went to for A&A over the years have been 1v1, Beamdog’s 42SE client is 1v1 for ranked, League/tournament play on here is strictly 1v1, and basically every Classic/Revised league worth its salt from the old days were 1v1 as well. In basically every game I played I found that all of the “teams” effectively boiled down to “leader/follower” dynamics anyway (not to mention that sometimes the teammates would starting getting antsy with each other over who’s “fault” X/Y/Z thing in the game was), so if anything it just feels like a cheap way to cut the tournament’s runtime in half. I guess that’s fair since the organizers need to work with Gen Con’s schedule/table availability, but IDK, it’s just not an appealing format to me. Hopefully next time I go I can convince either my wife (who is roughly as good as I am) or one of my friends to go just so I can avoid the hazard of being paired with a random.

My gripes aside, I would definitely recommend trying to go to any F2F tournament one day, be it BGN’s upcoming series in the Ohio/Indiana area or something smaller wherever you live. It’s a high-octane version of A&A that is basically a completely different board game than what is played online (due to the turn/time constraints + the fact that calcs are explicitly not allowed)

In fact for the moment we still love the AA42 2d Edition for many reasons like the interception rules that is officially this way :

Both the attacking bombers and fighter escorts, if any, fire with an attack value of 1.
For each “1” rolled, a defending interceptor is immediately removed as a casualty. The surviving defending interceptors then fire with a defense value of 2.
For each result of “2” or less, the attacker chooses a casualty and removes it.
After the air battle is complete, or if there were no defending fighter interceptors, surviving fighter escorts are considered to be
retreated. They don’t participate in the actual bombing raid, are not subject to antiaircraft fire, and will remain in the territory
until the Noncombat Move phase. Any surviving attacking bombers carry out the bombing raid as described above.

Plus we ask the defending factory to pay directly in IPCs the bombing (max twice the value of the territory) like in the old versions!
