Anybody have info in units from the new Eastern Front Set??

well there’s only a few hours on it now  :-(

I like to get into the big games (so far at 1800 points each, heavy on the armour and 700 when infantry heavy).  I love the look of 3 D boards and build my own from styrofoam.

When you get that big, you need umpires who are really into the rules and who can keep the game on task.  Each player really can’t effectively fight more that 15 pieces and fewer is better unless there are all the same model.  Otherwise knowing their special abilities is tough to keep up with.  I have seen all sorts of games lost by those who have not employed the abilities properly.

With multiple players have the teams send up their players in some sort of order and have a designated die roller.  It keeps it faster.  Also, no thinking when its your turn to move or assault.  All that needs to be done ahead of time.

Let me know how 40K people take to this.  I’ve a club on my campus (Trent U. in Peterborough Ontario)that I’m unsure of how to break into with this game.

This is the kind of thing that would make me want to try eBay.

In my area the stores seem to be selling off the old stock and new stuff is no where to be seen.  This is why I buy enough when I start something to last me a life time.

Rangers are strong competitive piece, though unless they get new (non-improved) indirect fire units the Spotter SA is mostly just thematic.

As the opening salvo says, “its inevitable that it will be compared to the Axis workhorse, the SS-Panzergrenadiers.” Quite true, though thankfully the Rangers have enough differences to keep them from being just carbon-copies.

The Lead the Way SA is interesting in that it’s once per turn, not per phase (or during movement and/or assault), so be careful when you use it; unless it’s to grab a last minute objective, re-rolling a movement roll isn’t too important, though thematically it’s nice.

Spotter is again nice, if not too useful. The M1 81mm Mortar doesn’t need a spotter, nor do spotters enhance them, and the open back M7 105mm Priest is an easily neutralized unit. I suppose you could save 1 point and use the Russian mortars instead if you really wanted to. Also, lacking the Spotter SA they can’t enhance aircraft.

The Rangers have slightly improved defence and a re-roll over the similar Veteran SMLE Riflemen; the only time the Australian unit is, well when you can’t take Rangers (eg Pre-1942 game). By themselves the Rangers are at the high end of 5 points, but compared to the Garand they perhaps should have been 6; as is they make the Garand fairly useless. Sure the Garands can have the same dice, without a re-roll, but that requires more points for an adjacent commander, and is -1/-1 defence.

A great unit that I’m sure will see a lot of use both in casual and competitive games: 4.5/5

Most of these suggestions would go well with the House Rules sets on the other A&AM forums; most of the sets have one common idea when it comes to planes: only units with the SA: Anti-Air should be able to shoot them. Me? I think MGs should too, but that’s just me. But a Garand shooting down a Stuka? Silly. Infantry never did enough damage to planes to warrant how easy it is in the game rules.

Air Rules

HHR uses the Flak Only Rule. Only Flak and other planes can shoot at planes. The four flak units so far are

the 20mm Flak 38 the Quad 50 the Bofors 40mm the Wirbelwind

The Luftwaffe Inf has been stripped of its AA ability, further changes subject to a full review of that unit (coming shortly). Although the Wirbelwind hasn’t been formally reviewed, we have already voted to give it Double Shot. Any other units that are going to be recognized as Flak units are either future releases or may be introduced on a case by case basis.

All Flak units get a 4 hex zone of defensive fire. During defensive fire, if a flak unit scores a disruption on a plane, and rolls 3 sixes while doing so, then the plane is Aborted and is immediately removed from the map to the off map area with a face up disrupted counter. It may come back onto the map the following turn with its face up disruption counter if the owning player so desires.

Yes, the Soviets don’t have a dedicated AA unit – but their standard AA gun was a knockoff of the Bofors weapon.

From DerickRL’s House Rules (different than HHR):

Aircraft:
When attacking aircraft, all ground units, without the SA: Anti-Air, use their long range infantry attack as a medium range attack, and their medium range attack as their short range attack(with -1 to each die). No long range attacks against aircraft are available to units without the Anti-Air SA.

All soldier units get +1 on each die to cover rolls from aircraft in town or forest hexes.

All short and medium range hexes are considered to be adjacent for purposes of defensive fire attacks against aircraft by Anti-Air units

Artillery & Assault gun’s can not attack aircraft unless they have the SA: Anti-Air.

All units with SA’s: Blast and/or Bombardment cannot attack aircraft.

I think a mix of the two would be nice, since I like HHR’s, but I also like how in the latter units get +1 cover in towns and forests vs. planes.

Its got to be the crocodile for me!  I love the tank its a marvel at such a low price.  As a UK army only person I always make sure and take at least one.

Besides new units, what other kinda new stuff will the new set include?  Like new maps, with new terrain, or what?
