@tincanofthesea when I designed the game I tried very hard to allow it to replicate any action that actually happened during the war.
The war started in June 1950, by August North Korea nearly pushed the Allies off Korea completely.
So yeah, that can happen in the game… although it isn’t very easy.
Another example is that I changed the movement value for naval units from 4 to 5. My reason was that it was impossible to transfer units from the West coast (Inchon) to the East coast (Wonsan) in one move. This actually happened during the war. In October 1950 Marines were pulled from Inchon to Wonsan.
The turns are month based. One turn round (both players have moved) equals one month.

Another problem with having way to many spaces is that they are only worth 0, 1, maybe 2.  Not worth building an IC there to help speed things up for two units.

What should be done, if you want an historic correct game, is to give some vital territories an high value, and other territories no value. Some territories had oil, like south Romenia, Caucasus and Iraq, other places had iron ore, like northern Sweden, and some places had big industri, like western Germany, eastern Ukraine, Volga and UK. So this territories should have high value. And poor places in the wilderness, like Belo-Russia, Northern Norway, Eastern Poland should have no value.

But because of playability, because the designer want battles in all territories, they usually give each territory the same value. So usually Germany with big industri and big resources and big population, have a 6 IPC value, and Belo-Russia with no industri, no resources and a small population, also get 4 IPC value. In the most insane case, there was this map that gave impassable Himalaya an IPC value of 2. That was half the value of Germany. I guess the designer had never visited Himalaya. But the result was, that impassable Himalaya had more action than the historical battlefields.

yah, with three diffrent idealogies competing for contol, that would be cool, but i was going for a game that was a little less black and white

leaders of arab countires are more often allied with western powers than with Islam, Russia and China are not on the best terms either, and in this game i am going to make it possible for Russia and China to have full scale war with each other. Also its not like the US, UK, and France are able to agree on eyerthing either. I think it is best if they are seperate powers.

sure their will still be too sides, NATO, headed by the US, and the Warsaw Pact, headed by the Soveits. but the alliances are not set.
In fact at the start of the game all countries should still be at peace. each power can either buy NATO or WARSAW Pact vicotry points with 10 IPCs, of course doing that lowers the effectiveness of their armies the next turn, and so should only do this when they are not expecting attack

THe US and USSR are the only countries that start out active, If  US/UK/France are attack all of those countries can become active, of course I am going to have diplomacy rolling that can weaken or change the NATO alliance

China, and India are different. You can gain control of them diplomaticly or you can attack them to makes them active. if you attack one, the other becomes contoled by your alliance

The diplomacy thing will be clearer later, I also might make diffrent national objectives for each contry so that when you have more than two players, diplomacy can be represented by people instead of dice rolls.

We’ve never produced an actual WWII game excepting for the micro game that came bundled with the first and only issue of the Empires of History Magazine. That was a Stalingrad game. We’re going to re-release that game as a stand alone game using the new style game units and cleaned up rules under our Compact Game line. The newer evolution of that line took the games to full color maps and full color units on chipboard (but still cut outs) and the price got bumped from $4.95 to $7.95. So far we’ve release Jutland, Ramesses’ War and Fallen Blackhawk: Somailia in this style as well as upgrading the Barbary Coast War, Beyond Hadrian’s Wall and the Battle of Thermopylae. The Battle of Stalingrad will soon join it.

We’ve been working with our Empires of History: WWII game for a couple of years now but it hasn’t left internal play testing yet. Still needs some more balancing. A game that big and involved takes a long time to get right.

On the space front we have a couple ideas in the works. We’ve recently put a bid in on a fairly significant sci fi property and if we can hammer that out, that’ll become a line of space board games done under the same game play style of our Empires of History game line, but with more stats and rules emphasis on the ships.

If the license doesn’t pan out we eventually plan to put out the Empires & Overlords space setting as a stand alone board game. That is the space setting that is tied to Button Wars but the primary game will be playable as a strategy board game and will not require any button wars pieces. It will have a secondary option of being used as a Button Wars campaign gaming map too. This game will have ship development tech, ships, fighters and mecha. It will also have a variety of ground troops. The game will come with a variety of planetoid templates…maybe as many as 20 of them. Each major “homeworld” planet with significant population will hence be its own zone world map that can be fought over. Homeworld defenses, both orbital and planet-side can be used. Ultimately a good sized fleet should be able to pound a planet and its people to oblivion from space, but it may take a few turns and otherwise tie down the fleet. And if you toast everything from space there is nothing less to conquer and hence no economic benefit. Should prove to be an interesting game. We have a preliminary map for the game on the Button Wars web pages already, though it was drafted a few years ago, so don’t take it for being the final map.
