• This is already known to the other Mods, but is now being made public since it is only 1 month away…

Effective June 15th, I am resigning as a Moderator and as Tournament Administrator.

What started out as a joy for me more than 2 years ago, has instead become a labor that I loathe to engage in.  Tournaments that I once loved to watch over and keep moving, have become a thing that I dread.  Even my personal e-mail address has been so deluded with SPAM and fraudulent purchases because of the actions of folks on these boards that I will be deleting the identity that I have had for most of a decade.

I enjoyed most of my time as a Mod, and I am very pleased that I was able to resurrect Tournaments after a several year gap.  That they grew from just 14 people the first year to where we have had nearly 40 active gamers for a Singles Tournament, even with the tight time restrictions over a span of 5 months that Tournament participation demanded, is something that I take great pride in.

    But I have exceeded burnout.

And to be honest I am rather ticked off over the off-board attack on my cyber ID that has required that I shut down my ID that has been a part of me for so long.

Tournaments are on hold pending further action by the remaining Mods and Admins to work out a new framework in order to keep them going.

My final act will be the declaration of the 2008 Singles Medalists.

It has been real, most of it has been fun, some of it has even been real fun…

Sorry to hear about your email.  I know you blame me, but I expect you blame me for a lot of things you don’t like that I have nothing to do with.

Anyway, you are a formidable opponent and I do hope you stick around just to play some games.

  • Wow, sorry to see you go Switch. I’ve enjoyed reading some of your posts about strategy and tactics. Does this also mean you will be hanging out less and maybe even disappearing altogether from these boards? No more playing online…here at any rate? Best of luck…and to quote Captain Sobel from BoB: “Hi Ho Silver…!”

  • I will have to keep my ID active through the DAAK Cup, so I will not be 100% gone.

But in addition to the the crap with my ID and the BS with Moderation duties and Tournaments, I also have had a ridiculous string of bad luck in games that has been extraordinarily frustrating…  My current game has had no less than 10 total dice fracks against my Axis forces, including being wiped out in a Moscow strike around turn 10 for which I had 99% odds of victory…

I am still probably going to pull that game out (my second strike on Moscow 12 rounds later once I rebuilt went according to the odds), but it has taken a lot out of me.

Beating both the dice an my opponent is probably going to be my final victory…  The dice are too difficult of an opponent…

As for my strat posts…  The game is advancing beyond those posts.  It has been some time since I posted a major strategy topic (other than my simple Germany overview).  They work for getting folks to where they are not lost here, but they do not hold up against the level of play that has been developing.

That is a problem with this game.  You can’t pigeon hole a strategy, people will eventually evolve to counter your strategy and then you are back to square one.

Or, if you are like me, that’s a blessing of this game!

  • Thanks, Switch.  :-)

Dice can be oh so frustrating…I just open a beer and say “Next Game”.

Pride does not let me do that…

And in the case of my current game, it appears that my Thomas Covenant grade obstinance will likely pull out the win despite the insane dice…

Only one 30% USA attack stands between me and my final victory here…  Though I am not sure my opponent even knows the game will come down to that one fight one and a half turns in the future (barring more insane dice against me, which would be par for the course in this game)…

The dice are my Illearth Stone, and my skill is White Gold.  Now if Saltheart Foamfollower will just laugh…

Always a good attitude.  Lord knows, i don’t have a good attitude when it comes to bad dice.  Sometimes I get so irked I’ll actually curse in the thread.  However, so far, that’s been limited to one game where the dice were absolutely ridiculous for the life of the game!

Anyway, as I said, I hope you stick around, Switch.  As a player you can be formidable, you have the system down, I just think you need to tweak it a bit to deal with some off the wall ideas players can come up with.  You seem to have as much trouble with different tactics as I have with formula players. (this many infantry, this many artillery, this many tanks, attack these zones on this round, etc…that’s what I mean by formula players.)

Anyway, I don’t play at DAAK, never really did, never really plan too, so your only shot at me is here or AAMC or FOE.  You know who I am, and I’m never too proud to play you, after all, we are 2:1 (you have 2, I have 1, always looking to even the score!)

Let me re-phrase then. Thank you Switch for your strategies which were pretty damn good when you put them out, especially for a noob like me. I, personally, found them to be very useful and helpful for getting started. When you are the only “hardcore” A&A player among your friends, any extra pointers and legs-up is most useful. I know your strats and articles helped me out during hte last few years. And sure, they might not hold up over the long term, but during the short term, when this site and these boards didn’t have that many people on it, just the “old stand-bys” who roamed here, they were pretty interesting food for thought.

And sure, you can’t do what Jen pointed out, but for those people starting out, it really is a blessing. Switch - no offence with this comment - but you are a very helpful teacher with your posts about how to play the game. It’s a shame we never got to play a game during our time here (at least, no games that I can think of  :| :-P ).

  • I’m very sorry to hear your announcement Switch but I completely understand your reasons.

Burnout is one thing and hard to avoid, but it’s sad to know that you’ve been driven to this.

I know forum moderating is a thankless job. A sincere thanks for everything Switch. ~ZP

  • What can i say…

with sincere respect to DM and others as Game Administrators, i think that with loosing you Switch, we loose our best Game Master. You we bein doing your job, almost flawless. The tourn. were anounced months in front, the information always there, explanations for what we ve needed. You get in some fights considering tourn.rules and you choose to be conservatively with the rules. Some agree with you, some dont. But the thing is, you ve been a great Game Master and you ve always fought to play/master honest. That is what i appreciate.

as, for you playing capabilites, you were ( for a very long time ) simply the best player on this forum. Had best strategies, and tactics. The times have changed, DM ˝evolved˝, JWW came up, Gamer, now some new folks, Eskimo Jack, Rising Dragon…

you re let say, Michael Schumacher of this site, just you re not like him, he played foul
but as him, after long periods of domination, the end of his career he was defeated by a youngster!

but your career isnt over, i am sure you ll get back, and ˝take sculps˝ again, if not as the best, at least as one of top few,( now you re definitely belong to Top 10-12 on this site)

only the best can return and be again!

as for the dices, the ˝dont get along with Jen˝, and all the stuff that fall upon your back lately, well what can i say

in my life, in last 2-3 months, almost everything fell on my, sometimes you simply have to withdraw, just to, after some time when you strenghten, come back as a ˝new man˝

the end, is not an end, just a new beginning

all the best, hope to meet you in the battle field, from all the players i ve played and the games( ok those long-turm with JWW, Mac, and EM were something special)

but with you almost every game was something i enjoy playing, to surprise the opponent, or how i like to say it to ˝outsmart˝ him. That were our games, and i believe many others you played against many opponents

    see you soon!

    until then, take care

    Amen Brother

Most of us (mods) have expressed our thoughts in the secret places that only mods visit,

as for me, it will be a pain in the ace finding another mod that is as active as switch is or was…

Hey, Switch if you want some stress relief, I am in the planing stages of my last face to face before I go over there, my face to face games are a blast.

  • You come to me DF…

Weather is perfect this time of year…  Guest room is already cleaned and ready…  And I am just a couple of minutes away from a major airport (RDU).  I’ll even kick in free beer and wine…
    :-D

    Amon, ZP, DJ and others…

    Thank you.  Seriously, Thank you.

That you think so highly of my actions as a mod, admin, and strat poster makes me think that the 120+ days of my life spent logged into this site in the past 3 years has not been a total waste.

I really hope that a new Tournament Admin (or group of Admins) is found to keep the Tournaments going.  I would be seriously disappointed if my departure marked an end to the Tournaments.  I think they went a long way to promoting this site and getting us to the volume of gaming that we have here today.

And to Yanny, DJensen, and the other Mods who selected me to take a Mod role when I was still wet behind the ears on these forums…  Thank you.  I hope that your trust was well founded, and that in the past 2-3 years you have not regretted your decision to make me a mod.  I am sorry that I am walking away from my responsibilities, but I have just become too erratic as a result of burnout and I no longer can say with any confidence that I can do the job without bias.  The last several months have been a serious challenge for me, and I hope that my personal frustrations have not caused too many problems, nor any permanent issues that need to be addressed.

Again to all of the gamers…
Damn I have enjoyed the games!  The wins, the losses, and the totally screwed up games like one with my Japan IC in Denver in a game that the Axis lost…

I hope to come back from time to time to play a game or three…  Though once I am out of the DAAK Tournament I will have a new e-mail addy attached to my ID.

DM, DF, DJ, GG, Yanny…  Best of luck with the site, and PLEASE find another addict to take my place :-)

  • Thanks for tackling a thankless job, not only to you Switch, but to all the mods.

Like your health, you take it for granted until it is gone.  Your efforts and dedication will be missed.

  • Moderator

I just want to thank Switch for his time modding and running the tourneys etc.  It is no small feat to get those things up and running and actually come to a conclusion.

Great job and thanks.  I certainly hope you continue to post here from time to time.

I second everything Darth said and most of these posts. I hope you are still active on the boards though. Thank you for do such an outstanding job as moderator. I think it’s disgusting that you have more negative than positive karma. you have my thanks.

  • Official Q&A

'Switch, I know I’m mostly a lurker around these parts, but I’d like to thank you for your service and dedication to this site.  I seriously doubt that most folks can even begin to imagine the amount of effort it takes to do what you’ve been doing here (no offense meant to anyone).  It’s people like you that keep the on-line community growing and thriving.  But the job takes its toll, and nobody can do it forever.

Good luck in the future, and may the dice gods smile on you!

  • I haven’t been a member for long, but I can see Switch in every forum doing all the work needed to make this a great site.

Take care and enjoy your rest.

  • Switch, I know it’s a bit late but thanks for all of your hard work.
