What is so bad about taking Karelia in the first turn(s)?

EXTRA BONUS PS:  We have an interesting houserule about the capture of an enemy capital.  The IPC’s from that capital are like a stash of gold.  They are heavy, and immobile (man, digital transfer of funds thru international banking cartels just DIDNT happen back then).  That said, if you take a capital, the IPC’s of that capital are in your hands, but they are stuck in the capital of origin.  You CANNOT spend them, until a turn where the capital is in your possession on the beginning of that turn, at which point those IPC’s are transferred to your general fund, to be spent anywhere. (It takes a full round to liberate enemy gold).  Even then, the captured capital only has limited production capabilities (ie, Moscow produces only 10 units) according to the normal rules.  If you take a capital, and the enemy retakes that capital on their next turn, the enemy also retakes their gold.  Note those IPC’s can only be spent on their next turn, provided they still own the capital.Â

So which money is lost when the surviving opponent’s heavy bombers do a stategic industrial bombing attack?

However, if the german 8 inf are placed on UKR, you can strafe them with everything Russia has in range and then retreat to Karelia (leaving 1 Rus. inf in Caucasus). This makes it impossible for Germany to take Karelia on turn 1 unless the use all their planes leaving UK with enough of a navy to take Karelia back on the second turn or do other damage like that.

This is 1 defense that wont work and will lose for the allies most of the time. The only way to go if you want to stay in Len is making no land attacks in Europe. This is already pretty risky. If you do attack chances for allied succes will go down, and attacking Ukr is one of the worst options.

The Russians might opt for attacking Fin w/3 inf, 3 arm, 1 ftr and clearing the BAL sz w/sub, trn, ftr. Picket Len w/1 inf, move aa out of Len and buy 3 inf, 3 arm. All eastern units rush to Mos, and setup for a counter attack on Len. This is quite risky as well, b/c the Japs can send air support to Len after Germany took Len on G1 (ftr Man, ftr Bur, bmb Jap).

Although it sets me back 30 IPCs, I prefer to build complexes in both S. Africa and Egypt. Then I roll 4 tanks a turn up Japan’s (sometimes soft) underbelly.

I would think this would be the other way around. First, the Japanese high command was not averse to continuing their war with America. In order to understand this, you have to know high factor national honor is to the Japanese and their Code of the Bushido. Even after the first atomic bomb was dropped, the military leaders still believed with the right combination of AA guns that such bombers and bombs could be hit while still in the sky. The Japanese even experimented with sound vibrations in which to knock down enemy craft! However, with the Russians, the Japanese were caught in a totally different situation. The Japanese knew that if they capitulated, the time would come where the Americans would eventually leave. If the Russians had occupied Japan, the Japanese knew that they might never leave. This largely mirrors real life as Russian and Japan are still disputing over some of the Northern Islands of Japan since the end of WWII.

Look, I think it’s possible if you and Japan can CRIPPLE UK’s economy by taking land and strategic bombing while building up. Not probable, just possible…

It was completely straight up, 3rd edition A&A with no Russian first attack. I did not need my airforce and used it to kill all ships in the Atlantic. I was still trasporting 2 inf a turn to africa, and also managed to kill the troops in egypt. He did purchase badly however, he bought all tanks with russia, and built a pacific navy to kill japan. I guess that was it, he just was doing everything that he should not. Brutal. Taking england was icing on the cake.

Come on! Why didn’t you just tell him the USSR and Japan both played POORLY. I figure…

R1: 24 IPCs to spend - 4 ARM purchased(total purchase=20 IPCs, 4 IPCs remaining)… placed in Russia or the game woulda technically been over after G1.

R2: 28 IPCs to spend - 1 IC for SFE(YOU DIDN’T EVEN ASK ABOUT IT[USSR Pacific Navy,HA!]), 2 ARMs[assuming he learned a little something](total purchase=25 IPCs, 3 IPC remaining.

Then after G2 Japan could chew off his SFE forces and use the shiny new IC!

And you NEVER ASKED what the US and GB were doing in the meantime.
